A Tale of Saul (Peace be upon him) (L-313)

أَلَم
تَرَ إِلَى المَلَإِ مِن بَني إِسرائيلَ مِن بَعدِ موسىٰ إِذ قالوا لِنَبِيٍّ
لَهُمُ ابعَث لَنا مَلِكًا نُقاتِل في سَبيلِ اللَّهِ ۖ قالَ هَل عَسَيتُم إِن
كُتِبَ عَلَيكُمُ القِتالُ أَلّا تُقاتِلوا ۖ قالوا وَما لَنا أَلّا نُقاتِلَ في
سَبيلِ اللَّهِ وَقَد أُخرِجنا مِن دِيارِنا وَأَبنائِنا ۖ فَلَمّا كُتِبَ
عَلَيهِمُ القِتالُ تَوَلَّوا إِلّا قَليلًا مِنهُم ۗ وَاللَّهُ عَليمٌ
بِالظّالِمينَ246. |

246. ‘Alam tara ‘ilal-mala-‘i mim-
Baniii-‘Israaa-‘iila mim- ba’-di Muusaa. ‘Iz qaaluu
li-nabiyyil-lahumub-‘as lanaa Malikan-nuqaatil fii SabiiLillaah.
Qaala hal ‘asaytum ‘in- kutiba ‘alaykumul-qitaalu
‘al-laa tuqaatiluu. Qaaluu wa maa lanaaa ‘allaa
nuqaatila fii Sabii-Lillaahi wa qad ‘ukhrijnaa
min-diyaarinaa wa ‘abnaaa-‘inaa. Falammaa kutiba ‘alay-himul-qitaalu
tawallaw ‘illaa qaliilam-minhum. WAllaahu
‘Aliimum-biz-zaalimiin. |

246. Have you not considered the notables of the Children
of Israel after Moses? When they said to a prophet of theirs, “Appoint a king
for us, and we will fight in the cause of God.” He said, “Is it possible
that, if fighting was ordained for you, you would not fight?” They said, “Why
would we not fight in the cause of God, when we were driven out of our homes,
along with our children?” But when fighting was ordained for them, they
turned away, except for a few of them. But God is aware of the wrongdoers. |
It has been pointed also in this verse towards an important story of the history of the children of Israel. After some times of departing Prophet Moses (Peace be upon him), the Children of Israel assembled in the temple of Jerusalem being confused from the attacks of King Goliath and other enemies, and being helpless from every side. Perhaps this reign was of Prophet Samuel (Peace be upon him). They requested the Prophet of God (Peace be upon him) to appoint for them a commander-in-chief, under whose supervision; they may fight. He {Prophet Samuel (Peace be upon him)} said, “I’m afraid that if it is commanded to Fight (do jihad), then would you not refrain from fighting”? They assured that they would have to fight in the Way of God, while they had been driven from their dwellings with their children. But when the time for fighting came, they all turned away save some of them.
