Intentional Infidelity (L-119)

وَلَمَّا جَآءَهُمْ كِتَٰبٌ مِّنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ مُصَدِّقٌ لِّمَا مَعَهُمْ وَكَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ يَسْتَفْتِحُونَ عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ فَلَمَّا جَآءَهُم مَّا عَرَفُوا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ۚ فَلَعْنَةُ ٱللَّهِ عَلَى ٱلْكَٰفِرِينَ89.

89.  Wa lammaa jaaa-‘ahum Kitaabum-min ‘in-Dillaahi musaddiqul-limaa ma-‘ahum, wa kaanuu min- qablu yastafti-huuna ‘alal-laziina Kafaruu  Falammaa jaaa-‘ahum-maa ‘arafuu kafaruu bihii fala’-natUllaahi ‘alal-kaafiriin.

89.  And when there comes unto them a Scripture from Allah, confirming that which is in their possession—though before that they were asking for a signal triumph over those who disbelieve—and when there comes unto them that which they know (to be true) they disbelieve therein. So the curse of Allah is on disbelievers.

Kitaabum-min ‘in-Dillaahi – (a Scripture from Allah), here the word Kitaab signifies towards Holy Qur’an, first address of which was also for the Jews instead of the Infidels of Makkah. Majority of these people was living in Madinah.

Limaa ma-‘ahum – (that, which is in their possession), the aim from it is Torah, the Heavenly Book of the Jews. Holy Qur’an has mentioned its virtues at various places and proclaimed that this Scripture “Qur’an” is also a True Book of Allaah Almighty; it confirms other previous Heavenly Scriptures. Out of the previous Books the most famous Book is Torah, which was revealed on Prophet Moses (peace be upon him).

Yastafti-huuna (they were asking for a signal triumph), this word has been derived from the word Fatah. According to Arabic language, it means “wish of superiority and victory”. In this verse, its both meanings can be taken. Before coming of Last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, peace and blessings be upon him), whenever the Children of Israel were defeated by the natives of Madinah, at that time, they used to pray in the Court of Allaah Almighty for victory and help, for the sake of Last Messenger (grace, glory, peace and blessings be upon him). This matter had been included in their trust that the Last Prophet (grace, glory, peace and blessings be upon him) would come to set them free. They would get freedom after believing in him (grace, glory, peace and blessings be upon him).

When a Scripture, which was revealed by Allaah Almighty unto the Jews, in which; verification of the principles of the Divine law of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) did exist, then those people disbelieved, and for which Last Messenger (grace, glory, peace and blessings be upon him) they had been waiting, and for the sake of whom they used to pray for victory against the Infidels, when he, Known Prophet (grace, glory, peace and blessings be upon him) came unto them; they began to disbelieve in him (grace, glory, peace and blessings be upon him). Now those disbelievers have been cursed by God Almighty due to their infidelity. And they became victim of God’s wrath.

It appears from this statement that the Jews belong to a bigoted and jealous nation, so they have been cursed and put away from the Mercy of God Almighty due to their refractoriness and infidelity.

Bigotry Of The Children Of Israel

 

Stubbornness of the Children of Israel (L-118)

88. وَقَالُوا۟ قُلُوبُنَا غُلْفٌۢ ۚ بَل لَّعَنَهُمُ ٱللَّهُ بِكُفْرِهِمْ فَقَلِيلًا مَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ

88.  Wa qaaluu quluubunaa gulf.   Bal-la-‘ana-humUllaahu bi-kufrihim fa-qaliilam-maa yu’-minuun.

88.  And they say: Our hearts are enfolded in covers. Nay, but Allah has cursed them for their unbelief. Little is that which they believe.

Gulfun – (enfolded in covers), ‘aglaf is its singular. It means, “Covered thing”, the thing, which is enfolded in cover and hidden in the curtain. The Children of Israel used to claim that their hearts are enfolded in covers and filled with the teachings of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him). So they did not need to accept any new teachings.

La-‘anahumUllaahu – (Allaah has cursed them), La’-nat means distance from the Mercy, someone’s deprival from God Almighty’s Grace and Mercy. It is also called the curse as that person is ignored by all. 

Qaliilan – (Little), it signifies that they used to pay a little attention towards the belief; off and on and only a few people, some out of them used to believe. Majority was inclined towards dishonesty, faithlessness and violence.

When God Almighty fixed the self fabricated faiths of the Jews that those were False and the Word of Allaah Almighty proved them wrong clearly, then there was no trick or argument remained with the Children of Israel. They began to say that their hearts were enfolded in the covers and nothing could effect on their hearts. They would never obey or become loyal to the instructions of anyone else.

The Jews used to state their false proof with much pride but God Almighty proclaimed clearly that they were totally liars. There is no any enfolded cover. But Allaah Almighty has cursed them for their chained unbelief and its covers have enfolded their hearts. They have been removed from His Mercy and Kindness. So they do not believe in their true religion. From them, only a few people have believed in the Last Messenger Muhammad (grace, peace and blessings on Him).

It is known from this verse that if the mankinds either deny the Revelations of God Almighty or change them or transpose the words between them, or disobey continuously, then Allaah Almighty curses them. The individual like this cannot draw his attention towards the Religion and Belief.

Sensuality and slaying the Prophets (L-117)

87b. أَفَكُلَّمَا جَآءَكُمْ رَسُولٌۢ بِمَا لَا تَهْوَىٰٓ أَنفُسُكُمُ ٱسْتَكْبَرْتُمْ فَفَرِيقًا كَذَّبْتُمْ وَفَرِيقًا تَقْتُلُونَ

87b.  ‘Afa-kullamaa  jaaa-‘akum Rasuulum- bimaa  laa tahwaaa  ‘anfu-sukumus-takbar-tum.  Fa-fariiqan- kazzabtum wa fariiqan-taqtuluun.

87b.  Is it ever so, that, when there comes unto you a Messenger (from Allah) with that which you yourself desire not, you grow arrogant, and some of you disbelieve and some you slay?

God Almighty has bestowed two powers upon the human beings:

• Power of Belief (faith, religion, certainty and confidence).

• Power of practice (procedure, compliance, operation and action).

If these both powers are right and straight forward; then the path of object becomes easy. In the previous verses, Allaah Almighty has described concerning those wicked deeds and crimes of the Children of Israel which belong to their power of practice. That is to say, they used to slay one another themselves and exile the feeble people. Now, weaknesses of the power of their belief and trust have been disclosed in this verse.

God Almighty commands, “We bestowed a Book to Moses (peace be upon him) for their guidance, but when the Children of Israel began to change the Commands of this Scripture and disobey them, then We sent many Prophets after Moses (peace be upon them). But these people continued disobeying some of them and even they slew some of them (peace be upon them) also. Then We sent Jesus (peace be upon him) with the Holy Scripture Gospel, and for proving his truth, We bestowed many Miracles to him, and appointed Angel, Gabriel (peace be upon him) to support him, but the Jews did not refrain from their habits and got ready to slay him (peace be upon him)”.

Now Allaah Almighty says, “Your circumstances are also strange, whenever any Messenger (peace be upon him) brought the command of Allaah Almighty against your personal desires and sensual wishes, you turned away from it with proud, falsified some Prophets (peace be upon them) and slew some of them.

Allaah Almighty bestowed many miracles upon Messenger Jesus (peace be upon him). For instance; he (peace be upon him) was bestowed to heal the blinds as having sight, cure the lepers and make the patients healthy, God Almighty produced him (peace be upon him) without father and bestowed power to speak in the cradle etc. But even then, the Children of Israel did not believe in him (peace be upon him) and continued opposing and committing troublesome acts.

Manifestation Of Jesus Christ

 

Coming of Jesus (L-116)

وَلَقَدْ ءَاتَيْنَا مُوسَى ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَقَفَّيْنَا مِنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ بِٱلرُّسُلِ ۖ وَءَاتَيْنَا عِيسَى ٱبْنَ مَرْيَمَ ٱلْبَيِّنَٰتِ وَأَيَّدْنَٰهُ بِرُوحِ ٱلْقُدُس  87a.

87a.  Wa laqad ‘aatayNaa Muu-sal-Kitaaba wa qaffayNaa mim-ba’-dihii birrusuli wa ‘aatay-Naa ‘Iisabna-  Maryamal-Bayyi-naati wa ‘ayyadNaahu bi-Ruu-hil-Qudus.

87a.  And verily We gave unto Moses the Scripture and We caused a train of messengers to follow after him, and We gave unto Jesus, son of Mary, clear proofs (of Allah’s Sovereignty), and We supported him with the Holy Spirit.

QaffayNaa – [We caused a train (of messengers) to follow}, after Prophet Moses, a chain of Prophets (peace be upon them) continued coming among the Children of Israel. From them, famous Prophets are David, Solomon, Zachariah, John, Yusha’ and Jesus (peace be upon them).

‘Iisaa – (Jesus), Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) is the last Prophet out of the Prophets from the Children of Israel (peace be upon them). No Prophet came in this world from the Children of Israel after Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him). After him, Prophet-hood was transferred towards the Children of Ishmael. In this dynasty the Last Prophet and Messenger, Muhammad (grace, peace and blessings be upon him) was born and after him, neither any prophet has come and nor will come. It means that the prophet-hood has been finished after him (grace, peace and blessings on him). Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) conveyed this good news, particularly about gracing with the Last Messenger’s presence (grace, peace and blessings on him). The calendar belonging to Jesus, starts with effect from the year of His death (peace be upon him). Naasirah is a Township in the Country of Syria, which was his Ancestors’ native land. Due to this relation, the people call him Masiih Nasri.

Maryama – (Mary) (God’s Blessings on her), her father’s name was Imran. She belonged to a very noble family of the Children of Israel. She was very modest also. Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was born from her womb without father.

‘Iisabna- Maryama – (Jesus son of Mary), it signifies that Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) also was a mankind. God forbid! He (peace be upon him) was not the son of God. However, he was a great Prophet and Messenger (peace be upon him) of God Almighty. Because he (peace be upon him) was born without father, so the relationship is mentioned towards His Mother. 

Al-Bayyi-naat - clear proofs (of Allaah’s Sovereignty), there is no space for tricks or arguments to deny these clear proofs. 

Ruu-hul-Qudus – (the Holy Spirit), the aim from Ruu-hul-Qudus is; Angel Gabriel (peace be upon him). He used to bring Messages of God Almighty towards Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them). He helped Prophet Jesus (peace be upon them) in every difficult situation, so he has been mentioned particularly here in this verse.

Life Of This World At The Price Of The Hereafter

 

The world at the price of the Hereafter (L-115)

أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ ٱشْتَرَوُا۟ ٱلْحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنْيَا بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ فَلَا يُخَفَّفُ عَنْهُمُ ٱلْعَذَابُ وَلَا هُمْ يُنصَرُونَ 86

86.  ‘Ulaaa-‘ikallazii-nashtara-wul-hayaatad-Dunyaa  bil-‘Aa-khirati falaa yukhaffafu ‘an-humul-‘azaabu wa laa hum yunsaruun.  (Section 10)

86.  Such are those who buy the life of the world at the price of the Hereafter. So their punishment will not be lightened, neither will they have support.

Bil-‘Aa-khirati – (at the price of the Hereafter), it appears from study of the religious books of the Jews that Belief in the Hereafter had not remained in their hearts. It is fact that concept of God Almighty and the Day of Resurrection is main Check and prohibition from evil-doing and sinful life. If the human being has no concept about second eternal life, rewards/remuneration on good deeds and punishment on sins and evil deeds; then there is no such method to prevent him from committing sins and evil-doing.

Laa hum yunsaruun - (they will not be supported), its origin is nasara, which means support, help. Ansaar (the supporters) is also from the same word and the word Mansur has been derived from it too, which means victor and victorious. Meanings of the entire sentence are, “They will not be supported by anyone to lighten their punishment”.

The Jews had fallen in the false suspicion that they, whether; how much sins commit, their ancestors and pious persons will reach to help them on the Day of Resurrection and save them from the torment of the Fire. Now God Almighty has decreed that their belief is invalid and wrong, and commanded that they would not be supported from any side.

Summary of previous verses has been described in this verse that the people, who disobeyed the Commands of Allaah, the Most High, turned back from their covenant after binding it and sacrificed their religion for their worldly benefits, followed the casual worldly relishes and tastes by giving up rewards, favors and kindnesses of the Day of Resurrection. They have bought temporary comfort of this world by leaving the prosperity of the Judgment Day. There will be severe punishment for them on the Day of Resurrection. Neither the torment upon them will be forgiven and nor will it be lessened. Those individuals should know that none can set them free and nor anybody can help them in this matter. After death, only good deeds of every individual will support him/her.

Breaking Promise and Disobedience

Breach of covenant and disobedience (L-113)

ثُمَّ أَنتُمْ هَٰٓؤُلَآءِ تَقْتُلُونَ أَنفُسَكُمْ وَتُخْرِجُونَ فَرِيقًا مِّنكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِهِمْ تَظَٰهَرُونَ عَلَيْهِم بِٱلْإِثْمِ وَٱلْعُدْوَٰنِ 85a.

85a.  Summa ‘antum haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i taqtuluuna ‘anfu-sakum wa tukhrijuuna fariiqam-minkum-min-diyaarihim; ta-zaaharuuna ‘alayhim- bil-‘ismi wal-‘udwaan.

85a.  Yet you it is who slay each other and drive out a party of your people from their homes, supporting one another against them by sin and transgression  -

It is known from this sentence that as the Children of Israel used to slay and shed the blood among themselves mutually or exile their compatriots and religious-fellows, which was not for any principle but only as a sin, oppression and transgression. The nation, which behaves like this with their own people, what a better behavior that can do with others?

God Almighty warns the Children of Israel in this verse, “You ratified Our Covenant that you should neither shed the blood of your people; nor turn (a party of) your people out of their dwellings.” But you oppose this covenant. You slay one another and drive out a party of your people from their homes.

During the times of Last Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), two tribes from the Children of Israel ‘Banu Nazair’ and ‘Banu Quraizah’ used to live in Madinah and its vicinity. They used to remain busy in civil war/domestic quarrels habitually. Two tribes of the Infidels of Madinah were also living there. One of the tribes from the Jews used to be friend of the one tribe of Infidels, and the other tribe of the Jews - friend of the other tribe of the infidels. Whenever the war used to begin, it was their routine to slay and exile one another.

It reveals from the history that after Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him), cruel contradiction grew among the twelve tribes of the Children of Israel. Many people were slain during their wars. Resultant, their government was ruined. They became slaves of others and were compelled to pass their lives under disgrace, infamy and ignominy condition.

Shedding Blood And Exilement

 

Shedding Blood and Exiling (L-112)

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَٰقَكُمْ لَا تَسْفِكُونَ دِمَآءَكُمْ وَلَا تُخْرِجُونَ أَنفُسَكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمْ ثُمَّ أَقْرَرْتُمْ وَأَنتُمْ تَشْهَدُونَ  (84)

84.  Wa ‘iz ‘akhazNaa Miisaa-qakum laa tasfikuuna   dimaaa-‘akum wa laa tukhrijuuna ‘anfusakum-min- diyaarikum summa ‘aqrartum wa ‘antum tash-haduun.

84.  And when We made with you a covenant (saying): Shed not the blood of your people nor turn (a party of) your people out of your dwellings. Then you ratified (Our covenant) and you were witnesses   (thereto).

Discourse of the Jews has been chained with effect from fifth Section of this Surah. The Children of Israel had gone astray from their real religion. They used to change and make alteration in the Holy Scripture of God Almighty Torah, after hearing the Commandments of Allaah Almighty and promising to fulfill it, they used to slip from that covenant. They were involved in false and self-invented fidelities. They had doubt that whether they commit lots of evils and sins, they would not be punished entirely, but their ancestors would get them saved from the Fire of Hell.

Refuting the false faiths of the Children of Israel, God Almighty disclosed by means of Holy Qur’an, (which is the universal law of deliverance). Only those people are entitled for the Paradise who believe in Allaah Almighty and do good works. Without them the individual, who has been involved in the evils, certainly, he will enter the Hell.

After talking about the law of salvation, God Almighty commanded about the way which is righteous and good servants of Him, and drew attention towards their covenant.

Allaah Almighty made with them two more covenants: 

1.   Shed not the blood of their people. 

2.   Not to turn (a party of) their people out of their dwellings. Because doing so, the collective dignity and fear of the nation will finish. The opponents will get opportunity to assault over them, get possession over them and become their rulers.

Covenant Of The Children Of Israel

 

Covenant of the Children of Israel (L-111)

وَإِذْ أَخَذْنَا مِيثَٰقَ بَنِىٓ إِسْرَٰٓءِيلَ لَا تَعْبُدُونَ إِلَّا ٱللَّهَ وَبِٱلْوَٰلِدَيْنِ إِحْسَانًا وَذِى ٱلْقُرْبَىٰ وَٱلْيَتَٰمَىٰ وَٱلْمَسَٰكِينِ وَقُولُوا۟ لِلنَّاسِ حُسْنًا وَأَقِيمُوا۟ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَءَاتُوا۟ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ ثُمَّ تَوَلَّيْتُمْ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا مِّنكُمْ وَأَنتُم مُّعْرِضُونَ 83.

83.  Wa ‘iz ‘akhazNaa Miisaaqa Baniii-‘Israaa-‘iila laa   ta’-bu-duuna ‘illAllaah. Wa bil-waali-dayni ‘ihsaananw-wa zil-qur-baa wal-yataamaa wal-masaa-kiini wa quuluu linnaasi hus-nanw-wa ‘aqiimus-Salaata wa ‘aatuz- Zakaah. Summa Tawal-laytum ‘illaa qaliilam- minkum wa ‘antum-mu’-rizuun.

83.  And (remember) when We made a covenant with the Children of Israel, (saying): Worship none save Allah (only), and be good to parents and to kindred and to orphans and the needy, and speak kindly to mankind; and establish worship and pay the poor-due. Then, after that, you slid back, save a few, being averse.

Miisaaq – (Covenant, promise, pledge, consent, agreement, negotiation, treaty), this covenant of the Children of Israel has been described at many other places in Holy Qur’an. It has been mentioned also in the Holy Scriptures i.e. Torah and Gospel.

God Almighty tells the Children of Israel in this verse: It has become your habit that you turn your faces away from the Commands of God, the Most High”. So their attention is being drawn towards their famous Covenant.

This Covenant was taken by God Almighty from the Children of Israel that they would never worship any other thing save Allaah Almighty, treat their parents, relatives and kindred, orphans and the needy well, politely and speak kindly to the mankind; and establish worship and pay the poor-due. But these people slid back after making the covenant with God Almighty and could not fulfill it. There were only some people who regarded their covenant and cared for their promise.

Along with it God Almighty commands: You slid back, being averse. It means that they were the people who used to turn away from their covenants and promises habitually and did not keep their footing on it.

We should learn the lesson from these Revelations and the covenant which we have committed with Allaah, the Most High, “The Testimony, that there is none worthy of worship but Allaah and Muhammad (Peace and blessings be upon him) is His Last Messenger”, we have to act upon the Commands of Holy Qur’an and the Sayings of the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings upon him). We must pass our lives remaining in the circle of this Testimony. We should remember this faithful promise always.

The Paradise And The Hell

 

The Gardens and the Hell (L-110)

81. بَلَىٰ مَن كَسَبَ سَيِّئَةً وَأَحَٰطَتْ بِهِۦ خَطِيٓـَٔتُهُۥ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلنَّارِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ  82. وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ أُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ أَصْحَٰبُ ٱلْجَنَّةِ ۖ هُمْ فِيهَا خَٰلِدُونَ

81.  Balaa man-kasaba sayyi-‘atanw wa ‘ahaatat bihii kha-tiii-‘atuhuu fa-‘ulaaa-‘ika ‘As-haabun-Naar. Hum fiihaa khaliduun.  82.  Wallaziina ‘aamanuu wa ‘amilus-saalihaati ‘ulaaa-‘ika ‘As-haabul Jannah. Hum fiihaa khaaliduun. (Section 9)

81.  Nay, but whosoever has done evil and his sin surrounds him; such are rightful owners of the Fire; they will abide therein for ever. 82.  And those who believe and do good works; such are rightful owners of the Garden. They will abide therein for ever.

 ‘Ahaatat bihii kha-tiii-‘atuhuu – (his sin surrounds him) it aims that they adopted the path of evil intentionally and then so rushed into the sins that there was no space remained for the Faith. This condition is of the people of infidelity (those persons who are unbelievers, disbelievers in the true religion and infidels).

‘Amilus-saalihaati – (they do good works) Good works are the necessary condition along with Belief for achieving the goal of entering into the Garden and for success in this world. The good works are the works which a person performs in accord with the commandments of God Almighty. 

The children of Israel had invented many false fundamental beliefs of the religion and these faiths were being shifted from previous race to the next, for instance, “they were beloved and fondling of God Almighty, they would not be punished due to their sins and if they would be punished, that punishment would be only for a few days, and that their ancestors and forefathers will get them forgiven from God Almighty”. 

Behind the shade of these faiths, those people used to commit every evil “unlawful acts and of contraband character” and they were involved in this false notion that it was not necessary for them to follow; till now; the religion and to believe in the teachings of the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon Him). 

God Almighty has refuted their false opinions in this verse, and commanded that dependence of being released is on two things:

• The person would have faith in God, the Most High.

• Do good works.

That is to say, dependence of rewards and punishment is on having belief in the commandments of God Almighty and acting upon them.

Contractors Of The Paradise

 

Monopolists of the Paradise (L-109)

وَقَالُوا۟ لَن تَمَسَّنَا ٱلنَّارُ إِلَّآ أَيَّامًا مَّعْدُودَةً ۚ قُلْ أَتَّخَذْتُمْ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ عَهْدًا فَلَن يُخْلِفَ ٱللَّهُ عَهْدَهُۥٓ ۖ أَمْ تَقُولُونَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ مَا لَا تَعْلَمُونَ80.

80.  Wa qaaluu lan tamassanan-Naaru ‘illaaa ‘ayyaamam-ma’-duudah. Qul ‘attakhaztum ‘indAllaahi ‘ahdan- falany-yukhli-fAllaahu ‘ahdahuuu ‘am taquuluuna ‘alAllaahi maa laa ta’-lamuun.

80.  And they say: The Fire (of punishment) will not touch us save for a certain number of days. Say: Have you received a covenant from Allah -- truly Allah will not break His covenant---or tell you concerning Allah that which you know not?

An-Naaru – (The Fire), this word indicates toward the Fire of the Hell. It has been mentioned in Holy Qur’an at various places and the human beings have been cautioned in the entire Heavenly Scriptures of the world. Nobody will be able to recommend any other to be saved from the doom of the Hell. Neither the remuneration will be useful and nor there will be any individual so much powerful that he may save any other.

‘Ayyaamam-ma’-duudah – (a certain number of days), the Jews had faith that they will be sent into the Fire only for a few days. After that, they will be brought out from it. Different numbers of days have been mentioned in their sayings. Some of them say it seven days and some other say for forty days. It signifies towards the days; they fell in the worship of the calf and some people say that every evil doer will be kept into the Fire equal to his age.

The Children of Israel used to suppose themselves that they were beloved and fondling of God Almighty. They used to discuss that His favors and kindness are as a warrant which He bestowed on them from time to time. For this purpose, they had invented many false sayings about it. Its proof was not available in their Holy Books. One from their invented false sayings and false traditions was, “they had faith in it that if God Almighty gave them any punishment due to their sins; that would be only for a few days. They would not remain into the Hell for ever”.

Allaah Almighty asks from the Children of Israel by means of His last Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), “Have you received a covenant from Allaah” due to which He is compelled to fulfill it? Indeed, either you have invented these false things yourselves or you tell concerning Him that which you do not know. There is no reply of it instead of it that their all claims like this, are only self fabricated. They have no such warrant of religion regarding these false sayings.

False Hopes

 

False wishes (L-108)

78. وَمِنْهُمْ أُمِّيُّونَ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ إِلَّآ أَمَانِىَّ وَإِنْ هُمْ إِلَّا يَظُنُّونَ فَوَيْلٌ لِّلَّذِينَ يَكْتُبُونَ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ بِأَيْدِيهِمْ ثُمَّ يَقُولُونَ هَٰذَا مِنْ عِندِ ٱللَّهِ لِيَشْتَرُوا۟ بِهِۦ ثَمَنًا قَلِيلًا ۖ فَوَيْلٌ لَّهُم مِّمَّا كَتَبَتْ أَيْدِيهِمْ وَوَيْلٌ لَّهُم مِّمَّا يَكْسِبُونَ 79.

78.  Wa minhum ‘Ummiyyuu-na laa ya’-lamuunal-Kitaaba ‘illaaa ‘amaaniyya wa ‘in hum ‘illaa yazunnuun. 79.  Fa-waylul-lilaziina yaktu-buunal-Kitaaba  bi-‘aydiihim summa yaquuluuna haazaa min ‘inDillaahi li-yashtaruu bihii samanan-qaliilaa. Fa-waylul-lahum-mimmaa kata-bat ‘aydiihim wa waylul-lahum-mimmaa yaksibuun.

78.  Among them are unlettered folk who know the scripture not except from hearsay. They but guess.  79.  Therefore woe be unto those who write the Scripture with their hands, then say, “This is from Allah,” that they may purchase a small gain therewith. Woe unto them for that their hands have written, and woe unto them for that they earn thereby!

 ‘Amaaniyya – (false hopes, hearsay), its singular is ‘umniah. This word is used in two meanings; 

(1) As like hope which does not have any reality and some persons remain cheerful only in false notions.  

(2)  Anybody remains fallen in false traditions and absurdities. There are a lot of instances of resemblances like this in the history of the Jews, for example their false notions that nobody will go into the Paradise except them.       

Samanan – (price, cost, value), meanings of this word are not only the net cash or cash price but anything which will be gotten as reward or remuneration for any other thing, that will be its samanan. In this verse samanan means worldly reward or remuneration.    

Mimmaa yaksibuun – (out of their earnings), in this verse it has two meanings; 

1.   Pile of their sins – because of increasing their sins due to these mischiefs constantly.

2.   Which financial reward or remuneration these persons achieve due to change or alteration/transposition.

Illiterate class of the Jews did not know that what has been written in the Holy Book Torah. They were aware of only a few false expectations, hopes and desires, which they had listened from their forefathers and expected that their ancestors will get them forgiven from their sins. 

God Almighty commands that the people who change His Orders and say that it is the order of God Almighty, unto them there is strict woe.

Hypocrisy of the Jews (L-107)

وَإِذَا لَقُوا۟ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ قَالُوٓا۟ ءَامَنَّا وَإِذَا خَلَا بَعْضُهُمْ إِلَىٰ بَعْضٍ قَالُوٓا۟ أَتُحَدِّثُونَهُم بِمَا فَتَحَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ لِيُحَآجُّوكُم بِهِۦ عِندَ رَبِّكُمْ ۚ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ 76.  77. أَوَلَا يَعْلَمُونَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَعْلَمُ مَا يُسِرُّونَ وَمَا يُعْلِنُونَ

76. Wa ‘izaa laqullaziina ‘aa-manuu qaaluuu ‘aamannaa. Wa ‘izaa khalaa ba’-zuhum ‘ilaa ba’zin- qaaluuu ‘a-tuhad-di-suunahum- bimaa fatahAllaahu ‘alaykum  li-yuhaaaj-juukum-bihii ‘inda Rabbikum. ‘Afalaa ta’-qiluun. 77. ‘Awalaa ya’-lamuuna ‘an-nAllaaha ya’-lamu maa yusir-ruuna wa maa yu’-linuun.

76.  And when they fall in with those who believe, they say: We believe. But when they go apart one with another they say: Prate you to them of that which Allah has disclosed to you that they may contend with you before your Lord concerning it? Have you then no sense? 77.  Are they then unaware that Allah knows that which they keep hidden and that which they claim?

Li-yuhaaaj-juukum-bihii – (they may contend with you concerning it), hajaj is the origin of haaaj-juu. The word hujjat has also come out from it, which means “proof, argument and reason”. Meanings of this entire sentence are, “to make it proof and argue with this source”. The Jews, who transposed words in the Holy Scripture; Torah, used to say to their hypocrite friends: You provide proofs to the Muslims against your own, by telling them the real teachings of your Book.  

It is being mentioned with effect from here about the Jews, who were Hypocrites. Whenever, these people used to meet cordially with the Muslims, they used to disclose their faith in the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and to gain their favor, they used to tell them the entire foretelling and emblems for authentication and support of the Last Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), which exist in their Religious Book.

But, whenever these Jews used to meet with one another, they used to censure mutually: Why have you provided the weapon to the Muslims against yourselves, by telling about your teachings. The Muslims will use these proofs against you and by taking your own words as a warrant, they will give evidence against you before God Almighty that the Jews did not return to the real religion, whereas they had known everything”. As though, these foolish people were supposing that Muslims can know these matters only through the Jews. They do not know that God Almighty can disclose their all matters (open or hidden) before the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and the Muslims, any time.

Transposition Of Words Of God

 

Amendment in the Word of God (L-106)

أَفَتَطْمَعُونَ أَن يُؤْمِنُوا۟ لَكُمْ وَقَدْ كَانَ فَرِيقٌ مِّنْهُمْ يَسْمَعُونَ كَلَٰمَ ٱللَّهِ ثُمَّ يُحَرِّفُونَهُۥ مِنۢ بَعْدِ مَا عَقَلُوهُ وَهُمْ يَعْلَمُونَ 75.

75.  ‘Afa-tatma-‘uuna  ‘any-yu’-minuu  lakum  wa qad kaana fariiqum-minhum yasma-‘uuna  KalaamAllaahi summa yuharri-fuunahuu mim-ba’-di maa ‘aqaluuhu wa hum ya’-lamuun.

75.  Have you any hope that they will be true to you when a party of them used to listen to the word of Allah, then used to change it, after they had understood it, knowingly.

Tatma-‘uuna – (you have any hope), this word has been derived from Tama-’a. Common meanings of Tama-’a are ‘to long for’, ‘to have greed’ and also it means ‘to hope’, ‘to expect’. Here it signifies towards the last meaning.  

Yuharri-fuunahuu – (they used to change it), origin of this word is harafa and infinitive mood is tahriif, which means ‘change’. There are two ways of changing the words:

• Literal changing (to change the words, to change its pronunciation, so that reality of the word may be changed. For instance; the Jews used to speak the words ‘hintatun’ instead of ‘hittatun’ and ‘ra-iina’ instead of ‘raa-‘ina’).

• Significant change (to change the meanings of the words – in translation and explanation).

After telling the important happenings in the history of the Children of Israel, Allaah Almighty commands in the previous verse that these people will not admit/recognize any warning from these Revelations because their hearts have become harder than rocks. Exemplary happenings have no effects on their hearts.

In this verse, Allaah Almighty admonishes the Muslims, “Do you wish that they should agree to your sayings, whereas from their ancestors, during the period of Prophet Moses (peace be upon him) and after them also there was a party, which used to change intentionally after listening to the Speech of God Almighty. While it was the condition of their elders then; have you any hope that they will be true to you? How can you expect from them of goodness? They are ill-disposed people. They will never believe.

It appears from God Almighty’s such proclamation that the Muslims should not have much expectation regarding acceptance of Islam by the Jews.
