Let the disbelievers find harshness in you

Lesson # 1156 from Holy Qur-’aan

Let the disbelievers find harshness in you

Surah ‘TAWBAH or BARAAA-‘AH (REPENTANCE) – Chapter – 9)
Stage – 2, Verse –123 of 129, Section – 16 of 16 (Part – 11)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

123.  O ye who believe! Fight those of the disbelievers who are near to you, and let them find harshness in you, and know that Allah is with those who keep their duty (unto Him).
123.  Yaaa-‘ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aamanuu  qaati-lullaziina  ya-luu-nakum-minal-kuffaari  wal-yajiduu  fii-kum  gilzah.  Wa’-lamuuu  ‘annAllaaha  ma-‘al-Muttaqiin.

Lesson

In the previous verse, the Muslims were caused to understand “how to make different parties of suitable people for every work separately”. In this verse, scheme of fighting and making the enemies helpless has been explained, because this work also had fallen suddenly upon the Muslims forcibly.

The world taught them (the Muslims) that there is no other way but the last opportunity - war against refractory people to seize them. It is compulsory for individual and collective development of the human being that bestial manners should be kept under the control of human attributes and should be brought into use as and when required according to necessity.

But prevalence of the bestial wishes prevented the Idolaters, at that time, from understanding that; not only this; but they desired to amputate beast-like to the Muslims in to pieces, and considered that they would crush the Believers with their physical and collective power.

At last, the Muslims were informed that even the human beasts of prey can be overwhelmed also with power. In the beginning, they were compelled collectively to fight the Infidels to break their strength. But when they observed that after starting the war, it becomes difficult to stop it, then they had to fix the war-laws under compulsion. And according to those laws, fighting like beasts was against the humanity.

It has been commanded in this verse that Allah Almighty helps those who obey Him and fear from His anger. You should fight enemies bearing this command in mind. Every city of the Muslims should keep the enemies, near to them, under their influence and demonstrate before them of power. So that, they refrain from wickedness and understand that “Being only beast-like will not be useful. Being human is also a necessary thing. Attempt to press others by physical and material force is just like ruin of humanity.

They should understand it well that the Muslims support peace and safety for all. They will never precede from their side for fighting. However, if someone will try to overpower them with tyranny and forcibly, then they will subdue their enemy by the order of their Lord, Allah Almighty. And until he does not correct himself, they will not release him.

How to perform national duty

Lesson # 1155 from Holy Qur-’aan

 How to perform national duty

Surah ‘TAWBAH or BARAAA-‘AH (REPENTANCE) – Chapter – 9)
Stage – 2, Verse –122 of 129, Section – 15 of 16 (Part – 11)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

122.  And it is not possible that the Muslims should march forth altogether. Why should not then small party from each tribe march forth so that they (who are left behind) may gain sound knowledge in religion, and that they may warn their folk when they return to them, so that they may beware.
122.  Wa  maa  kaanal-Mu’-minuuna  li-Yanfiruu  kaaaf-fah.  Fa-law-laa  nafara  min-  kulli  firqatim-min-hum  taaa-‘ifatul-li-yatafaqqahuu  fiddiini  wa  li-yunziruu  qaw-mahum  ‘izaa  raja-‘uuu  ‘ilay-him  la-‘allahum  yahzaruun.

Lesson

Yanfiruu – (march forth), origin of this word is nafarun, which means “to go out by leaving a place, to move”. After it, the word nafara is past tense from the same word. Here it aims “to get ready for public welfare works”.

It is commanded that if entire people come out for doing every work, then no work will be performed correctly as well as other works will remain pending. So, for this purpose, the work should be distributed mutually, and for every work, only those persons should be selected separately, who are able to perform any particular work.

Therefore, it has been caused to understand by an example that acquiring education is a national duty, because if the people, who are aware of the law, will not exist to guide the public, then law and order will be overthrown. Now, if all people begin to acquire the knowledge of the law, then who will perform other works, which are necessary for living, for example “agriculture, trade, industry, handicrafts and other professions”?

So, it will be convenient if those people; who are mentally fit for acquiring knowledge, they should begin to exercise in the profession of Religious Law, and at the time of necessity, they should teach the public “how to correct their character”. And whoso needs, ask their advice.

By doing so, it can be hoped that the people will continue in close contact with useful deeds by giving up harmful works. In this verse, the way of distributing different works and professions has been described very clearly. It is evident that capability of every individual is not equal. Someone is physically more fit than others. He is suitable for working hard i.e. cultivation and fight etc.

Someone is intelligent. He can perform in arts and sciences according to his ability. However, if the entire nation has been surrounded by the enemy from all around and the Government has proclaimed that everyone should be ready for war, then every individual should give up all other works and present himself for the safety of the nation. And which task is given to him, should perform it properly.

Exchange of goodness

Lesson # 1154 from Holy Qur-’aan

 Exchange of goodness

Surah ‘TAWBAH or BARAAA-‘AH (REPENTANCE) – Chapter – 9)
Stage – 2, Verse –121 of 129, Section – 15 of 16 (Part – 11)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

121.  Nor spend they any spending, small or great, nor do they cross a valley, but it is recorded for them, that Allah may repay them the best of what they used to do.
121.  Wa  laa  yunfi-quuna  nafa-qatan-  sagii-ratanw-wa  laa  kabii-ratanw-wa  laa  yaqta-‘uuna  waadi-yan  ‘illaa  kutiba  lahum  li-yajzi-ya-hu-mUllaahu  ‘ahsana  maa  kaanuu  ya’-maluun.

Lesson

Nafa-qatan – (any spending), this word was discussed in Chapter two (Surah ‘Al-Baqarah). Yunfi-quuna has been made from the same, origin of which is ‘anfaaq. ‘Anfaaq means “to spend anything.

Yaqta-‘uuna – (they cross over, they travel), origin of this word is qat-‘a. Qat-‘a means “to cut”. It aims “to pass the way, to cross over any field”.

In this verse, there is mention about such good works, which the Muslims perform. It is appendix of previous verse. Because every work/deed of every Muslim is based on faith and honesty, and which difficulties are suffered by him are for the pleasure of Allah Almighty, so suffering from hardships are also counted in good works. That is to say; doing good works and bearing pains, both will be written in the form of his good works.

It is commanded that whatever the Muslims spend for the Cause of Allah Almighty, whether that is small or great, how much they travel; only for the sake of God Almighty and for the help of Islam, these all activities are entered in their Character Roll as good works. And against such good works, they will be given much more substitution than their good works.

It has been described in this verse that one should not consider that all financial, physical and pertaining to life sacrifices of Muslims are fruitless. But Allah Almighty will repay them the best of that; what they used to do, whether that was small or great.

Their good works affect in the world. Its effect will be that the community of Muslims will develop and move ahead being strong and organized. They will be cooperative and united for one another, and their entire enemies will be ruined by their own hands. And this sapling of Islam; which was still younger, will become a very big tree after strengthening its roots. Branches and leafs of it will spread so much vide that if the world will desire, it will live in its shadow safe and sound, and will enjoy its fruit.

And on the Day of Resurrection, these entire small and great sacrifices will be foundation of ease and pleasure for ever. After looking the comforts of the Paradise, the Muslims will say: Our worldly works and efforts are valueless against these blessings.

Do what you think proper and don’t be afraid

Lesson # 1153 from Holy Qur-’aan

Do what you think proper and don’t be afraid

Surah ‘TAWBAH or BARAAA-‘AH (REPENTANCE) – Chapter – 9)
Stage – 2, Verses –120b of 129, Section – 15 of 16 (Part – 11)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

120b.  that is because neither thirst nor toil nor hunger afflicteth them in the Way of Allah, nor step they any step that angereth the disbelievers, nor gain they from the enemy a gain, but a good deed is recorded for them therefor. Lo! Allah loseth not the wages of the good.
120b.  Zaalika bi-‘annahum  laa  yusii-buhum  zama-‘unw-wa  laa  nasabunw-wa  laa  makh-masatun-  fii  Sabii-Lillaahi  wa  laa  yata-‘uuna  mawti-‘any-yagii-zul-kuffaara  wa  laa  yanaa-luuna  min  ‘aduw-win-naylan  ‘illaa  kutiba  lahum-  bihii  ‘amalun-saalih.  ‘InnAllaaha  laa  yuzii-‘u  ‘ajral-Muh-siniin.

Lesson

Laa  yata-‘uuna – ({(they) do not step}, origin of this word is wat-‘un. Wat-‘un means “to crush something under foot, to advance by a movement of the feet, to move”.

Mawtii – (gait walk, motion), this word is also from the same origin as mentioned above.

Laa  yanaa-luuna – (they do not gain). This word has been derived from nay-lun, which has been used also in the verse after this word. Nay-lun means “to get, to gain, to find anything”.

Those Muslims, who did exist in Madinah and its vicinity, were instructed in the previous verse: You should participate sincerely and promptly in hard and arduous works along with the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), which He has been doing in the Way of God Almighty. It is not suitable for you in any way that He (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) suffer from hardships by leaving His ease and comfort, remain thirsty and hungry for the Pleasure of Allah Almighty, and you sit at your homes satisfactorily and engage yourselves in eating and drinking only. It has been explained in this verse that which hardship you will suffer for the Cause of Allah Almighty, will be counted in your conduct sheet as a good work.

It is commanded that the Muslims are being enjoined for all this; for the purpose that in it, there are higher degrees for them in the Hereafter. Against every painful work, a good work will be written in their Record Book. And then its retaliation will be given to them in the world and in the Day of Resurrection. At last, they will get success, honor and eminence in the world, and on the Day of Judgment they will be sent to the Gardens for ever. Their thirst, hunger, hard working and putting any step for keeping the refractory Infidels under influence, punishing them properly due to their impudence and rebellion, is because of sincerity for Allah Almighty, so every deed of such kind will be mentioned in the column of Right Acts. Allah Almighty does not desire to take work from you without any exchange. There are good remunerations and rewards with Him for those who do good. Any good work of any human being will not be destroyed.

Preferring own life to the Messenger’s is not proper

Lesson # 1152 from Holy Qur-’aan

Preferring own life to the Messenger’s is not proper

Surah ‘TAWBAH or BARAAA-‘AH (REPENTANCE) – Chapter – 9)
Stage – 2, Verses – 119 & 120a of 129, Section – 15 of 16 (Part – 11)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

119.  O ye who believe! Be careful of your duty to Allah, and be with the Truthful.

120a.  It is not (proper) for the townsfolk of Al-Madinah and for those around them of the wandering Arabs to stay behind the Messenger of Allah and prefer their lives to his life.
119.  Yaaa-ayyu-hallaziina  ‘aama-nutta-qUllaaha  wa  kuunuu  ma-‘as-Saadiqiin.

120a.  Maa  kaana  li-‘ahlil-Madiinati  wa  man  haw-lahum-minal-‘A’-raabi  ‘any-yata-khallafuu  ‘ar-RasuuLillaahi  wa  laa  yargabuu  bi-‘anfusihim  ‘an-nafsih.

Lesson

That lesson has been manifested in this verse which Muslims should learn from previous incidents,. When Messenger of God Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) instructed the Muslims to be prepared for the Battle of Tabuuk, then a commotion was to arise.

True Muslims, who were ready every time to sacrifice their lives on the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), got ready immediately according to custom without wrangling and they presented their wealth according to their means. But some of them were those who began to think.

On this side was commandment of the Messenger of Allah Almighty (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam), and on the other side, there was extreme suffering and pain. Ultimately, their Belief compelled them that, while the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) has been bearing entire hardships, then we have no right to remain behind. And they joined being ashamed on weakness of their hearts. None was remained behind at home save those three persons; story of whom was mentioned in the previous lesson, and they punished themselves. Now there was a group of weak and insolent people who remained behind.

Besides them, there was another group of Hypocrites, which remained behind. First group was excusable, but the second – deserved severe punishment in the world as well as on the Day of Judgment. It has been described in this verse about those people who are imitation-able and who can be a pattern for others.

It is commanded that the Believers should be careful for their duty to God Almighty and fear God’s anger and wrath, and join the party of those people who chose sincerity and truth. These are the people who deserved honors and awards due to their good attributes. And those people who erred; were forgiven on the ground of their good-will and truth.

In the second verse, it is commanded that it does never set off to the people of Madinah and those who live in its surroundings that they should sit at home comfortable while the Messenger (SallAllaahu alayHi wa AaliHii Wasallam) would have been suffering from heat, hunger and thirst in the Way of Allah Almighty. It is incumbent that they should sacrifice their lives on the Life of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

They were forgiven whose decision was deferred

Lesson # 1151 from Holy Qur-’aan

They were forgiven whose decision was deferred

Surah ‘TAWBAH or BARAAA-‘AH (REPENTANCE) – Chapter – 9)
Stage – 2, Verse – 118 of 129, Section – 14 of 16 (Part – 11)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

118.  And to the three also (did He turn in mercy) about whom the decision had been deferred until the earth, vast as it is, became straitened for them, and their own souls were straitened for them till they bethought them that there is no refuge from Allah save toward Him. Then turned He unto them in mercy that they (too) might turn (repentant unto Him). Lo! Allah! He is the Relenting, the Merciful.
118.  Wa  ‘alas-salaa-satil-laziina  khullifuu.  Hattaaa  ‘izaa  zaaqat  ‘alay-himul-‘arzu  bimaa  rahubat  wa  zaaqat  ‘alay-him  ‘an-fusu-hum  wa  zannuuu  ‘allaa  malja-‘a  minAllaahi  ‘illaaa  ‘ilayH.  Summa  taaba  ‘alay-him  li-yatuubuu.  ‘InnAllaaha  Huwat-Tawwaa-bur-Rahiim.

Lesson

It has been described in this verse that those three persons are also included in the Mercy of Allah Almighty whose decision was deferred. And during the period of deferment, the Muslims were commanded that they should break off their all connections entirely from them. These three individuals are Ka’b bin Malik, Hilal bin Umayyah and Maraarah bin Ar’Rabii’. These people were true Muslims and rich also. But thinking that “we shall move today or tomorrow” they could not join the Army and remained behind at home.

After returning of the Army from the Battle of Tabuuk, these three people spoke the truth before the Messenger of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and accepted their failure. The decision about them was deferred.

In this verse, about them, it has been explained that besides the confusion of waiting, they suffered from the calamity of “breaking off all connections” for many days, until this verse was revealed. At last, they were forgiven also; because intention of any of them was not false. They were true Believers, pure from infidelity and hypocrisy.

It is commanded that their error has been forgiven whose decision was postponed. The people had abandoned with them talking and meeting, even every relationship, according to the commandment of God’s Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). When they used to come unto the Messenger, He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) used to turn from them. Nobody used to talk to them, and everyone used to desert them. Even that; their living had become very difficult. They were greatly worried and used to bewail that “Our Lord! There is no abode for us save You”.

Even that, the Christian King of Ghassaan wrote a letter to Ka’b bin Malik (May Allah be pleased with him) and wished to seduce him in these words, “Why are you suffering there? Come on to us and live comfortably”. But he was a true Muslim, did not listen to anyone, and used to pray before Allah Almighty imploring earnestly and humbly for forgiveness of his mistake. At last, Allah Almighty had pity and He sent down for them too glad tidings of forgiveness.

God is Full of Pity, Merciful for Muslims

Lesson # 1150 from Holy Qur-’aan

God is Full of Pity, Merciful for Muslims

Surah ‘TAWBAH or BARAAA-‘AH (REPENTANCE) – Chapter – 9)
Stage – 2, Verse – 117 of 129, Section – 14 of 16 (Part – 11)

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful

117.  Allah hath turned in mercy to the Prophet, and to the Muhaajiriin and the Ansaar who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a party of them had almost swerved aside, then turned He unto them in mercy. Lo! He is Full of Pity, Merciful for them-
117.  Laqattaa-bAllaahu  ‘alan-Nabiyyi  wal-Muhaa-jiriina  wal-‘Ansaaril-lazii-nattaba-‘uuhu  fii  saa-‘atil-‘usrati  mim-  ba’-di  maa  kaada  yaziigu  quluubu  farii-qim-minhum  summa  taaba  ‘alay-him.  ‘InnaHuu  bihim  Ra-‘uufur-  Rahiim.

Lesson

Saa-‘atil-‘usrati – (the hour of hardship), the word “Saa-‘ah” is used for a little time i.e. an hour. Here it aims “the time”. ‘Usrah means “difficult, hard, severe”. The aim from Saa-‘atil-‘usrati  is the time of preparation for the Battle of Tabuuk. At that time; there were difficulties, distresses and extreme sufferings all around.

The Army of the Muslims, which got ready at such time, is also called “Jayshil-‘usrah”. The difficulties which were in front, are as under:
·       The people were tired, because they had returned from a Battle recently.

·       The weather was very severe hot.

·       It was season of gathering crops of the dates. At such times, owners of the gardens must be present.

·       The distance of journey was very long.

·       The war was against a very powerful enemy.
·       The Muslim Army was facing deficiency of food and war equipment. One date was provided to two soldiers per day for food. At the end, many soldiers used to suck one date, turn by turn, and then drink water.

·       Riding (conveyance) was not attainable. Ten soldiers used to ride on one camel turn by turn.

In such circumstances, it was not possible for everyone to remain steadfast. Which spirit and steadiness was proved by the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him), Muhaajiriin and Ansaar {those who quitted their native land (Makkah) and their helpers/friends in Madinah}, that is an instance of its own. Any example of such selflessness and faithfulness cannot be found anywhere in the world.

It is commanded in the verse that the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him) and His true faithful Companions (May Allah be pleased with them) remained steady and showed such spirit in such hour of hardship, due to which Mercy of God Almighty took them in Its Bosom.

The entire Muslims moved to suffer from hardships and endure labors along with the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon Him). Only a few persons remained behind without any excuse, narration about whom will be discussed later on.

Those all people were entitled by Allah Almighty to get His favors and honors. And those people who joined them after evasion, they were also forgiven. Allah Almighty is Merciful and Kind on the Muslims. Those deserve His Mercy; who help in hardship.
