Purpose of testing (L-484)

وَمَآ أَصَٰبَكُمْ يَوْمَ ٱلْتَقَى ٱلْجَمْعَانِ فَبِإِذْنِ ٱللَّهِ وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ . 166   وَلِيَعْلَمَ ٱلَّذِينَ نَافَقُوا۟ وَقِيلَ لَهُمْ تَعَالَوْا۟ قَٰتِلُوا۟ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوِ ٱدْفَعُوا۟ .  a167

166.  Wa  maaa ‘asaabakum  yawmal-taqal-jam-‘aani  fabi-‘izNillaahi  wa  li-ya’-lamal-Mu’-miniin. 167a.  Wa  liya’-lamal-laziina  naafaquu.  Wa  qiila  lahum  ta-‘aalaw  qaatiluu  fii  SabiiLillaahi  ‘a-wid-fa-‘uu.

166. What befell you on the day the two armies clashed was with God’s permission; that He may know the believers. 167a. And that He may know the hypocrites. And it was said to them, “Come, fight in the cause of God, or contribute.

Yawmal-taqal-jam-‘aani – (on the day when the two armies met), it signifies towards the day of the Battle of ‘Uhud, when the Armies of Islam and Infidelity stood opposite and confronted each.

God is the Omnipotent. He has full rule and jurisdiction over the entire universe. Victory and defeat is only in His hand. When Muslim crusaders and Idolaters of Makkah met face to face on the day of the Battle of ‘Uhud and the Muslims confronted accidental defeat, they were conquered on account of such situation arose because of their own act which was against the Will of God to bestow upon them full superiority. What happened, that was with the order of God and the Muslims produced its cause themselves. Aim of it was that belief and purity of the Muslims might be known on one side and hypocrisy of the Hypocrites might be disclosed on the other side, and the good might be separated completely from the bad.

Before starting of the battle, when Abdullah bin ‘Ubayy, the leader of Hypocrites began to return along with his three hundred companions, he was asked, “Where do you run at the spot? Come, if you are true in your claim that you are true Muslims, then let’s fight in the Way of God. Otherwise, at least, you must take part in stopping and repelling the enemy. That is to say, live together in the assemblage; so that the enemies feel upon their heart fear on account of more strength of our Army. If you do not fight in the Way of God, for the cause of Islam, then at least you should help us to stop the enemy as the passion of your native land, service of your nation or safety of your wealth and children, because if the enemy gets upper hand then he will take revenge from all and will not leave anybody. Overall, notwithstanding it was tried to warn them and by means of excitement; the entire matters were illustrated. But the Hypocrites did not accept and the vice of their hearts was manifested.

Abdullah bin ‘Ubayy returned to Madinah Township with his companion hypocrites but the Muslims moved forward for fighting. The incident, which happened there, has already been discussed earlier. Utterance Of Grievance Of The Mishap

 

Complaint of affliction (L-483)

أَوَلَمَّآأَصَٰبَتْكُم مُّصِيبَةٌ قَدْ أَصَبْتُم مِّثْلَيْهَا قُلْتُمْ أَنَّىٰ هَٰذَا قُلْ هُوَ مِنْ عِندِ أَنفُسِكُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ . 165

165.  ‘Awa-  lammaaa  ‘asaabat-kum-musiibatun- qad  ‘asabtum- mislayhaa,  qultum  ‘annaa haazaa.  Qul  huwa  min  ‘indi  ‘anfusikum.  ‘InnAllaaha  ‘alaa  kulli  shay-‘in- Qadiir.

165.  And when a calamity befell you, even after you had inflicted twice as much, you said, “How is this?” Say, “It is from your own selves.” God is Able to do all things.

The incident of the Battle of ‘Uhud was being described since long; its necessary detail was explained. Then such error was stated, which was committed by the Muslims. Later on, they were forgiven. God forgave also those archers and they were recommended by Him too to be forgiven by the Messenger (ﷺ). In this connection, manners and virtues of the Prophet of God, auspiciousness of his (ﷺ) existence and peculiarities were discussed. The Muslims were also told that coming of this Messenger into existence among them was greatest kindness of God upon them. They should know his (ﷺ) value and be thankful to God for this favor. Remaining story of the Battle of ‘Uhud is now being described again.

It has been declared to the Muslims, “Do you wonder on the disaster and loss, which you suffered from the Battle of ‘Uhud  and ask that whence this disaster has come? You consider that you were Muslims; you came out to fight against the enemies of the truth in the Way of God. He had promised also for help, then why and from whither this calamity has come upon you? You would have thought before speaking that; as much you suffered, your enemies suffered earlier double of it. Your seventy people were martyred in the Battle of ‘Uhud and became heirs of the Heaven. On the contrary, during the battle of Badr their seventy persons were slain and thrown into the Hell. In addition their seventy people became your prisoners, upon whom you had full control. If you wanted, you could kill them. Then besides the Battle of Badr, their more than twenty men were slain also in the beginning of the Battle of ‘Uhud. If you have lost here then imagine there, they have confronted disastrous defeat in the Battle of Badr , and in the Battle of ‘Uhud too, when you fought courageously, they lost all their wits, and ran away being senseless.

If you reflect then you yourselves became the reason of this trouble.

1.   Because of excitement, you persisted to fight after coming outward from the Township of Madinah.

2.   The archers disobeyed the Holy Messenger (ﷺ) and left the Pass unsafe. Why are you being surprised now? You became reason yourselves of this disaster and defeat; otherwise, God is Able to do all things. If He wished, He would not let you put in this trial. No doubt, He has the perfect Power of Influence.

Talents Of The Messenger Of Allah

 

God raised up among the believers a messenger (ﷺ) (L-482)

لَقَدْ مَنَّ ٱللَّهُ عَلَى ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ إِذْبَعَثَ فِيهِمْ رَسُولًا مِّنْ أَنفُسِهِمْ يَتْلُوا۟ عَلَيْهِمْ ءَايَٰتِهِۦ وَيُزَكِّيهِمْ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلْكِتَٰبَ وَٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَإِن كَانُوا۟ مِن قَبْلُ لَفِى ضَلَٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ . 164

164.  Laqad  mannAllaahu  ‘alal-Mu’-miniina  ‘iz  ba-‘asa  fiihim  Rasuulam-min  ‘anfusihim  yatluu  ‘alayhim  ‘AayaatiHii  wa  yuzakkiihim  wa  yu-‘allimu-humul-Kitaaba  wal-Hikmah.  Wa  ‘in-kaanuu  min-  qablu  lafii  zalaalim-mubiin.

164.  God has blessed the believers, as He raised up among them a messenger from among themselves, who recites to them His revelations, and purifies them, and teaches them the Scripture and wisdom; although before that they were in evident error.

Manna – {(He) did acts of kindness}, the words “man, yamunnu, ‘imtanaan, mannat etc. are from the same origin. In Holy Qur’an, it is only one likeness, which God has spoken about His favor conferred on His servants. It is the greatest kindness of God upon the mankind that He sent a Man as His Messenger (ﷺ) who is like other men. It is easy for the human beings to sit near him, to talk with him, to learn the Word (Qur’an) of God from him (ﷺ) and to reap the benefits of each type of His blessings. The people know very well the morality, honesty, trust, sincerity, purity, mercy and circumstances of this Messenger (ﷺ). When they observe the miracles appearing from the person, who belongs to their own folk and nation, it becomes easy for them to believe in him. Even if any demon or Angel (Peace be upon him) had come as messenger, seeing his miracles, the people could have pretended: He does not belong to our class (mankind). Therefore, his morality and deeds are not follow-able for us. So, God sent a mankind as His Messenger (ﷺ), who has good moral character, is merciful, mild and affectionate, from whom they can get bounty frankly. God has bestowed four basic excellences, which have already been described in Suratul Baqarah (The Cow):

1.   The Messenger (ﷺ) recites the Revelations of God and causes the people to hear by reciting, apparent meanings of which (Revelations) are able to be understood very easily by the people of the Arab as the Arabic was their own language.

2.   He (ﷺ) purifies the people from sins, evils, idol-worshiping and polytheism. By removing the badness, he (ﷺ) cleanses their hearts.

3.   He teaches the Scripture of God. Where it seems difficult to understand by the people, he (ﷺ) removes the doubts by clearing its meanings.

4.   He (ﷺ) teaches knowledge of Wisdom to the people, how to reach the bottom line, explains the secrets, signs and deep matters of Holy Qur’an.

The Messenger (ﷺ) of God formed the Arab nation as spiritual guide and masters of the entire world by his love and teachings, which had been drowned in ignorance and astray, which had no perfection or excellence of the world.

Dignity Of The Prophet (peace be upon him)

 

Every soul will be paid in full for what it has earned (L-481)

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَبِىٍّ أَن يَغُلَّ وَمَن يَغْلُلْ يَأْتِ بِمَا غَلَّ يَوْمَ ٱلْقِيَٰمَةِ ثُمَّ تُوَفَّىٰ كُلُّ نَفْسٍ مَّا كَسَبَتْ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ .161   أَفَمَنِ ٱتَّبَعَ رِضْوَٰنَ ٱللَّهِ كَمَنۢ بَآءَ بِسَخَطٍ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَمَأْوَىٰهُ جَهَنَّمُ وَبِئْسَ ٱلْمَصِيرُ . 162  هُمْ دَ رَجَٰتٌ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرٌۢ بِمَا يَعْمَلُونَ .163

161.  Wa  maa  kaana  li-nabiyyin  ‘any-yagull.  Wa    many-yaglul  ya’- ti  bimaa    galla    Yawmal-Qiyaamah.  Summa  tuwaf-faa  kullu  nafsim- maa  kasabat  wa  hum  laa  yuzlamuun. 162.  ‘Afa-manittaba-‘a  RizwaanAllaahi  kamam-baaa-‘a  bisakhatim-  minAllaahi  wa  ma’-waahu  Jahannam.  Wa  bi’-sal-masiir. 163.  Hum  darajaatun  ‘indAllaah.  WAllaahu  Basii-rum-  bi-maa  ya’-maluun.

161. It is not for a prophet to act dishonestly. Whoever acts dishonestly will bring his dishonesty on the Day of Resurrection. Then every soul will be paid in full for what it has earned, and they will not be wronged. 162. Is someone who pursues God's approval the same as someone who incurs God's wrath and his refuge is Hell—the miserable destination? 163. They have different ranks with God, and God is Seeing of what they do.

Maa  kaana  li-nabiyyin  ‘any-yagulla – {It is not for any Prophet to deceive (mankind)}. The origin of the word yagulla is yagullu, which means “to hide”. This sentence can be explained in many forms:

1.  First of all, “the people, who erred in the Battle of ‘Uhud, must have faith that while the most gracious Messenger (ﷺ) has forgiven them, then now; his heart has been cleaned from their side. Because, there is no difference between the heart (mind) and tongue of any Prophet (Peace be upon him). That becomes public which they have in their hearts.

2.  Secondly, the Messengers (Peace be upon them) do not conceal anything from their Ummah (nation), whether that is Revelation from God, or matters of truth and just or spoils of war or something else. So, none should bring any such false thought concerning the Messenger of God (ﷺ) in one’s heart.

In the second verse of this lesson, God declared the difference among a Prophet and that person who is not a prophet by means of an obvious likeness. God asks, “Is the Prophet, who follows the pleasure of God in every condition and wishes from others to follow His pleasure also, can he be as someone else who has earned His anger, and who deserves the Fire of the Hell? It can never be so.

In fact, any Prophet (Peace be upon him) and the entire other creatures are not equal. The Prophets and Messengers (Peace be upon them) cannot do the base and contemptible deeds like avarice and greed. God knows, “Who deserves any degree and who is entitled of which degree”? In God Let Believers Put Their Trust (L-480) 

إِن يَنصُرْكُمُ ٱللَّهُ فَلَا غَالِبَ لَكُمْ وَإِن يَخْذُلْكُمْ فَمَن ذَاٱلَّذِى يَنصُرُكُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِهِۦ وَعَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ ٱلْمُؤْمِنُونَ 160.

160.  ‘Iny-yansur-kumUllaahu  falaa  gaaliba  lakum.  Wa  ‘iny-yakh- zulkum  faman    zallazii  yan-surukum-mim- ba’-dih.  Wa  ‘alAllaahi  falyata-wakkalil-Mu’-minuun.

160.  If God supports you, there is none who can overcome you. But if He fails you, who is there to help you after Him? So in God let the believers put their trust.

The Messenger of God (ﷺ) was commanded in the previous verse, “Put your trust in God”. Now it is being described in this verse, “Trustworthy is only God, Who is the Mighty, the Overcoming”.

Which error was committed by the Muslims during the Battle of ‘Uhud, that was forgiven by God, as well as He also recommended to let them forgiven also by the Messenger (ﷺ). After that, they are being advised, “O Believers! You should neither be taken in deception of others; nor be fallen into the trap of Infidels and Hypocrites, nor impress your false and astray thoughts on your minds, but you must trust in God. If He is your Protecting Friend, none can overcome you as you have observed during the Battle of Badr that the Idolaters were more than threefold from you. You did not have sufficient arms and war equipment comparing to your enemies. But God helped you and fortunately you won the non-ordinary war in un-expected circumstances.

It has been described many times ago that victory and prevalence does neither depend on number of Army personnel, nor on abundance of war equipment, but its necessary condition is strong and firm belief and faith in God, and most of all the Personal Bounty and Mercy of God. The soldiers, who love their Belief more than their lives and all worldly valuables, they do not hesitate in sacrificing their lives for Its superiority. Their arms become manifold powerful and stable in their intentions more than usual.

An Infidel or Idolater soldier, who fights only for worldly benefits, he knows on no account to sacrifice his life. Where ever he felt danger for his life; ran away leaving everything behind. Such people are coward and weak. There is thief in their hearts and the strength of their arms goes to an end. Whether they are in majority, (have abundant fighters), they would be like a flock of the sheep. God Loves Them Who Trust In Him

 

God loves the trusting (L-479)

فَبِمَا رَحْمَةٍ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لِنتَ لَهُمْ وَلَوْ كُنتَ فَظًّا غَلِيظَ ٱلْقَلْبِ لَٱنفَضُّوا۟ مِنْ حَوْلِكَ فَٱعْفُ عَنْهُمْ وَٱسْتَغْفِرْلَهُمْ وَشَاوِرْهُمْ  فِى ٱلْأَمْرِ فَإِذَا عَزَمْتَ فَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَوَكِّلِينَ 159.

159.  Fa-bimaa  Rahmatim-minAllaahi  linta  lahum. Wa law  kunta  fazzan  galiizal-qalbi  lan-fazzuu  min  haw-lik. Fa’-fu  ‘anhum  wastagfir  lahum  wa  shaawirhum  fil-‘amr. Fa-‘izaa  ‘azamta  fata-wakkal  ‘alAllaah. ‘InnAllaaha  yuhibbul-Mutawakkiliin.

159.  It is by of grace from God that you were gentle with them. Had you been harsh, hardhearted, they would have dispersed from around you. So pardon them, and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in the conduct of affairs. And when you make a decision, put your trust in God; God loves the trusting.

There was a great negligence from the side of Muslims in the Battle of ‘Uhud. So, perhaps Holy Prophet (ﷺ) would have been angry in his heart and he would have intended that he would leave consulting with the Muslims in future. Therefore, God recommended the Muslims in a light style. At first, He declared that they were forgiven, because anger and grief of Holy Prophet (ﷺ) is only for God. Then He commanded, “It is a great Mercy of God that he made his Messenger (ﷺ) so much civilized, polite and lenient. If Holy Messenger Muhammad (ﷺ) were stern and fierce of heart, they would have dispersed from around him. It would not be sure that what behavior he would have adopted in this matter. This nation might not remain gathered around him. If he (ﷺ) would have called to account severely; then they could not come so much close because of shame and repentance. In such a way, they would have remained deprived of a great virtue and blessing, and the Unity of Islamic nation would have been shattered. 

Holy Messenger (ﷺ) ignores their errors for their correction. God guides, “Although, God has forgiven them now, however, you must ask Me for their forgiveness for more satisfaction of their hearts. Consult with them for conducting necessary affairs. After consultation, when a matter is finalized and Intended solemnly, then all of you should set up on it with perfect trust in God, because He loves those people, who put their trust in Him.  

Ali (May God be pleased with him) asked from the Holy Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), “O Messenger of God! The matter, which we do not find in Holy Qur’an, your Sayings and Traditions, then which way should we choose for that?” Holy Messenger (ﷺ) replied, “Consult with only those, who are wise and worshippers of God and do not follow the opinion of anyone else”. God Gives Life and Causes Death (L-478)

وَٱللَّهُ يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ بَصِيرٌ 156b. وَلَئِن قُتِلْتُمْ فِى سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ أَوْ مُتُّمْ لَمَغْفِرَةٌ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرَحْمَةٌ خَيْرٌ مِّمَّا يَجْمَعُونَ 157.  وَلَئِن مُّتُّمْ أَوْ قُتِلْتُمْ لَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ تُحْشَرُونَ 158

156b.  WAllaahu  yuhyii  wa  yumiit.  WAllaahu  bimaa  ta’-maluuna  Basiir. 157.  Wa  la-‘in-  qutiltum  fii  SabiiLillaahi  ‘aw  muttum  la-magfiratum-minGodi  wa  rahmatun  khayrum-mimmaa  yaj-ma-‘uun. 158.  Wa  la-‘im-muttum  ‘aw  qutiltum  la-‘ilAllaahi  tuhsha-ruun.

156b.  God gives life and causes death. God is Seeing of what you do. 157. If you are killed in the cause of God, or die—forgiveness and mercy from God are better than what they hoard. 158. If you die, or are killed—to God you will be gathered up.

It has been answered concerning the doubt of the Hypocrites that “If they (the Muslims) had been (here) with us, they would not have died or been killed”. God commands, “Causing death and giving life is in My Power of Choice. None can interfere in it. Whenever and wherever I wish, I cause death of the mankind. There are many such people who remain in journey condition during their entire life, they strive, attend fights and battles in the Way of God, but they die at home. And there are many such people who just stay at their homes and when their death approaches, they leave their homes with any pretense and they are killed or slain there, where God desired. No matter how many plans and arrangements a man makes, neither he can delay these things, nor can he change. However, these sayings of the Hypocrites are absolutely redundant and useless that if they had remained at their homes, they would never have died.

God knows the secrets of the hearts and intentions of the entire human beings. He observes whatever they do. He knows that, to which path the Hypocrites and the Infidels have been misleading and to what extent the Muslims avoid obeying their sayings. God will grant rewards to everyone in accord with every individual’s deeds. He says, “If you are slain in My Way or die, your sins will be forgiven and more blessings will be bestowed on you. Dying in the Way of God and getting remuneration in its return is much better than that thing which, Hypocrites and Infidels tried their best to escape from death. If you people will not come out for war in the Way of God and suppose, you are saved for some time, then, will you never die or will not be killed?  You have to die in every condition. Then you all will be gathered in the Court of God. At that time, you will come to know that the lucky persons, who died or were slain in the Way of God, how much blessings of God are sent on them, before which; worldly benefits of the Infidels have no value, and the people who died at the infidelity, in which wrath they have been entangled. https://youtu.be/gYgVHeDSlkY

Trick of Hypocrites (L-477)

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ لَا تَكُونُوا۟كَٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ وَقَالُوا۟ لِإِخْوَٰنِهِمْ إِذَا ضَرَبُوا۟ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَوْ كَانُوا۟ غُزًّى لَّوْ كَانُوا۟ عِندَنَا مَا مَاتُوا۟ وَمَا قُتِلُوا۟ لِيَجْعَلَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٰلِكَ حَسْرَةً فِى قُلُوبِهِمْ 156a.

156a.  Yaaa-‘ayyu- hallaziina  ‘aamanuu  laa  takuunuu  kallaziina  kafaruu  wa qaaluu     li-‘ikhwaa-nihim  ‘izaa  zarabuu  fil-‘arzi  ‘aw  kaanuu  Guz-zal- law  kaanuu  ‘indanaa  maa  maatuu  wa  maa  qutiluu. Li-yaj-‘alAllaahu  zaalika  hasratan-  fii  quluubihim.

156a.  O you who believe! Do not be like those who disbelieved, and said of their brethren who marched in the land, or went on the offensive, “Had they stayed with us, they would not have died or been killed.” So that God may make it a cause of regret in their hearts.

The Muslims have been advised that they should not place such absurd thoughts in their hearts as of the Hypocrites, “If we had been in our houses then we would not have been died or killed”. Remember it always that place and time of death has been fixed since the beginning. Neither it can be changed and nor delayed.

‘Ikhwaa-nihim  -  (the Hypocrites), they were apparently Muslims. Therefore, they have called the Muslims here as their brethren. In addition, because they have used these words in the style of well wishing, so the word ’ikh-waan (Brothers) is used in this verse. They said, “Our Muslim brothers died without any cause by going abroad, if they had been with us in their houses, then why would have they been killed”?

The Hypocrites had aim that grief and sorrow should be produced in the hearts of the Muslims that, “Really we did wrong as we went abroad from our houses without thinking and plunged in to the war. If we would have acted upon the advice of Hypocrites and remained in our houses, then we would not have suffered from the misfortune.”

Although the Jews tried their best to produce sorrow and grief in the hearts of Muslims and used such words by their mouths, but the Muslims were not so much weak that they would have been taken in their words. On the contrary, because of such absurd talks, their secret was betrayed and their badness of intention was manifested upon the Muslims.

Li-yaj-‘alAllaahu  zaalika  hasratan-  fii  quluubihim – (that God may make it anguish in their hearts). Some commentators of Holy Qur’an have explained its meanings in such a manner that “God released such words from the tongues and hearts of the Hypocrites, so that they would be left burning in the fire of that sorrow and grief, and they remain grieving until the Hereafter. Other grief they would have was that, “Alas! The Muslims did not turn like us, they did not listen to us but some of them were martyred and remaining people returned with victory. Today too, much can be learnt from the incidents of the day of the Battle of ‘Uhud. Therefore, a field of battle among faith and hypocrisy, right and wrong will remain in existence always.

قُل لَّوْ كُنتُمْ فِى بُيُوتِكُمْ لَبَرَزَ ٱلَّذِينَ كُتِبَ عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلْقَتْلُ إِلَىٰ مَضَاجِعِهِمْ وَلِيَبْتَلِىَ ٱللَّهُ  مَا فِى صُدُورِكُمْ وَلِيُمَحِّصَ مَا فِى قُلُوبِكُمْ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ154d. إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ تَوَلَّوْا۟ مِنكُمْ  يَوْمَ ٱلْتَقَى ٱلْجَمْعَانِ إِنَّمَا ٱسْتَزَلَّهُمُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ بِبَعْضِ مَا كَسَبُوا۟ وَلَقَدْ عَفَا ٱللَّهُ عَنْهُمْ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٌ حَلِيمٌ 155.

154d.  Qul-law  kuntum  fii  buyuutikum  labarazal-laziina  kutiba  ‘alay-himul-qatlu – ‘ilaa  mazaaji-‘ihim.  Wa  li-yabtali-yAllaahu  maa  fii  suduurikum  wa  li-yumahhisa  maa  fii  quluubikum.  WAllaahu  ‘Aliimum-  bizaatis-suduur. 155.  ‘Innallaziina  ta-wallaw  minkum  Yawmal-taqal-jam-‘aani,  ‘innamas-tazallahumush-Shaytaanu  bi-ba’-zi  maa  kasabuu.  Wa  laqad  ‘afAllaahu  ‘an-hum.  ‘InnAllaaha  Gafuurun  Haliim. (Section 16/7)

154d.  Say, “Even if you Had stayed in your homes, those destined to be killed would have marched into their death beds.” God thus tests what is in your minds, and purifies what is in your hearts. God knows what the hearts contain. 155. Those of you who turned back on the day when the two armies clashed—it was Satan who caused them to backslide, on account of some of what they have earned. But God has forgiven them. God is Forgiving and Prudent.

It has been advised to the Hypocrites in this verse, “It is useless to cry over spilt milk, there is no advantage of reproaching and slandering, grief and sorrow. God has predestinated every person’s place, cause and time of death with effect from the beginning, which cannot get out of the way. If you had been in your houses and suppose your advice had been accepted, even then; those persons, who were appointed to be slain in the camping ground of ‘Uhud, they would have gone forth to the places where they were to lie, somehow coming out from their houses. It is Kindness of God that the people, who were killed in the Battle, they were martyred, the death of braves in the Way of God. It is not the occasion to grieve and sorrow at this time”.

Then it has been declared that the purpose of this Battle was ‘to try the Believers and the Hypocrites so that the difference between the both may be distinguished, pure and false may become separate, sincere Muslims get remuneration of victory and their hearts may be purified from thoughts, inside of the Hypocrites be opened and their hypocrisy become public. As ability of more goodness increases from a goodness, likewise Satan gets opportunity from a sin or an evil to excite the human being for other sins or evils. The devil trembled their feet in the Battle of ‘Uhud but God was Bountiful upon the Muslims and He saved them from miserable defeat.

Thought Of Hypocrites

 

Hypocrites conceal their thought (L-475) 

يُخْفُونَ فِىٓ أَنفُسِهِم مَّا لَا يُبْدُونَ لَكَ يَقُولُونَ لَوْ كَانَ لَنَا مِنَ ٱلْأَمْرِ شَىْءٌ مَّا قُتِلْنَا هَٰهُنَا  154c.

154c.  Yukhfuuna  fiii  ‘anfusihim  -maa  laa  yub- duuna  lak.  Yaquuluuna  law    kaana  lanaa  minal-‘amri  shay-‘um-maa  qutilnaa  haa-hunaa.

154c.  They conceal within themselves what they do not reveal to you. And they say, “If it was up to us, none of us would have been killed here.

It is being described continuously that the Muslims suffered from a temporary defeat, extreme distress and anxiety after getting victory in the Battle of ‘Uhud, because of the carelessness of the archers. The venturesome Muslims remained in the battlefield and put a bold front, but the coward Hypocrites ran away leaving the battlefield behind. They began to say after this incident for removing their disgrace, “Such was the Will of God, what is our power in this matter”? Their actual aim from this saying was, “Our counsel was not complied in connection with the battle. We advised the Messenger (ﷺ) that the enemies should be encountered by remaining in the Township, but he (ﷺ) went out of Madinah for war; to fulfill the instructions of the passionate young men. If we had some power and we would not be ignored then the Muslims would not have gotten so much loss”.

Maa  qutilnaa  haa-hunaa – (then we should not have been slain here), the Hypocrites determined the slaughter of Ansaar (real habitants of Madinah) as slaughter of their own. It can also be meant that ‘why so many people should have been slain; if the victory and superiority were to be in accord with the Sayings of Muhammad (ﷺ) and why this misfortune would have fallen upon us?’ It is obvious from the word haa-hunaa (here) that the Hypocrites used these words in Madinah, because Abdullah bin ‘Ubayy had returned to Madinah along with his companions before starting of the Battle. It has come in notice from some historians that a Hypocrite had used these words in the battlefield. It can be so that some Hypocrites would not have been returned due to some convenience.     

Although, it was opinion of the Messenger of God (ﷺ) also that the battle must be fought by staying in Madinah as well as, it was advice of the Hypocrites, but most of the young companions (May God be pleased with them) opined that they should fight going out from the Township. God’s Messenger (ﷺ) wore the chain armor for this purpose. In this form, the Hypocrites had no right to bring their men back from the Army of Islam. Entire decisions are in the Power of God. He gives victory if He wishes and gives defeat whenever He desires. It does not differ to fight with the enemy by remaining in the Township or going out of it.
