39. As for those who disbelieve,
their deeds are as a mirage in a desert; the thirsty one supposeth it to be
water till he cometh unto it and findeth it naught, and findeth, in the place
thereof, Allah, Who payeth him his due. And Allah is Swift at reckoning -

Commentary
Qii-‘atin – (a mirage, an optical illusion,
presenting an image of water in sandy deserts or elevating objects in the air),
this word is plural of qaa-‘un, which means “sandy field”. In such field
the sand glitters and it seems that there is water at distance.
It was described in the previous verse that those Masaajid
are places of the appearance of the Light of Allaah Almighty, where His
worshiper slaves are present during the times of morning and evening for His remembrance.
And they do not forget Allaah Almighty by being entangled in worldly
matters. They fear the Day of Resurrection and abide by His all commandments. Good
remuneration of their good deeds will be given to them. Besides this Allaah
Almighty will bestow unto them sufficient by His Bounty.
Concerning those people has been described in this verse who do
not believe in Allaah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him). Such people who consider that they have been
doing good works, apparently it seems that those are good works which shine very
much from away, but its brightness is like mirage, as a thirsty sees the sand
at distance but considers that it is water; and he runs towards that direction
for quenching his thirst, but when he reaches there, does not find any water,
and he becomes senseless. Along with the same he is seized by Allaah’s
prescribed Law of Retaliation. Allaah Almighty is present everywhere. He
manifests the entire reality of his works which he did; considering good. And He
reckons swiftly his accounts, because He is very Swift at reckoning.
