Jonah Escaped (L-2778)

فَنَبَذْنَٰهُ بِٱلْعَرَآءِ وَهُوَ سَقِيمٌ 145   وَأَنۢبَتْنَا عَلَيْهِ شَجَرَةً مِّن يَقْطِينٍ 146   وَأَرْسَلْنَٰهُ إِلَىٰ مِا۟ئَةِ أَلْفٍ أَوْ يَزِيدُونَ 147   فَـَٔامَنُوا۟ فَمَتَّعْنَٰهُمْ إِلَىٰ حِينٍ 148

145.  FanabazNaahu  bil-‘araaa-‘i  wa  huwa  saqiim. 146.  Wa  ‘ambatNaa  ‘alayhi  shajaratam-miny-yaqtiin. 147.  Wa  ‘arsalNaahu  ‘ilaa  mi-‘ati  ‘alfin  ‘aw  yaziiduun. 148.  Fa-‘aamanuu  famatta’-Naahum  ‘ilaa  hiin.

145. Then We threw him into the wilderness, and he was sick. 146. And We made a gourd tree grow over him. 147. Then We sent him to a hundred thousand, or more. 148. And they believed, so We gave them enjoyment for a while.

 ‘Al-‘araaa-‘o – (the open shore, barren land which is without grass and water), it is an Adjective from ‘a-ra-ya, ‘uryaan, which means “naked, bare, nude”.

Yaqtiina – (creeper, a plant which creeps or climbs), it aims “the plant of pumpkin etc.”

Coming out of the name of Jonah (Peace be upon him) in drawn lot - was meant that he was a deserter slave of his Master. He understood that his act of saying to his people, “You will be caught in the torment of God” and coming out from the Township without Permission of God Almighty was a censurable work. For saving the ship from drowning, he himself jumped out from the ship. He (Peace be upon him) would have thought that he would save himself by swimming. But by the Command of God Almighty a fish swallowed him. After reaching the belly of the fish, he began to revile himself due to his error which happened due to his misunderstanding. He admitted his mistake and began to praise God Almighty. He had pity on Jonah (Peace be upon him) and commanded to the fish: Spit him out on the shore. That was a dry and desert shore where no grass or tree did exist. He suffered from weakness and ailing due to being closed in the belly of fish. God Almighty caused a plant of pumpkin to grow there for his safety, broad leaves of which covered his body.

On the other side, signs of torment appeared on the folk of Jonah (Peace be upon him) according to his sayings, but they repented before God Almighty due to fear and the torment got out of the way. God Almighty appointed Jonah (Peace be upon him) a Prophet for the same Township which had more or less than one hundred thousand individuals including children etc. The people of the Township believed on his hand and dwelled comfortably for a long time.

وَإِنَّ يُونُسَ لَمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ 139   إِذْ أَبَقَ إِلَى ٱلْفُلْكِ ٱلْمَشْحُونِ 140   فَسَاهَمَ فَكَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُدْحَضِينَ 141   فَٱلْتَقَمَهُ ٱلْحُوتُ وَهُوَ مُلِيمٌ 142   فَلَوْلَآ أَنَّهُۥ كَانَ مِنَ ٱلْمُسَبِّحِينَ 143   لَلَبِثَ فِى بَطْنِهِۦٓ إِلَىٰ يَوْمِ يُبْعَثُونَ 144

139.  Wa  ‘inna  Yuunusa  laminal-mursaliin.  140.  ‘Iz  ‘abaqa  ‘ilal-fulkil-mash-huun.  141.  Fasaahama  fakaana  minal-mudhaziin.  142.  Faltaqamahul-huutu  wa  huwa  muliim.  143.  Falaw-laaa  ‘annahuu  kaana  minal-musabbihiina.  144.  Lalabisa  fii  batnihiii  ‘ilaa  Yawmi  yub-‘asuun.  (Part One-Half)

139. And Jonah was one of the messengers. 140. When he fled to the laden boat. 141. He gambled and lost. 142. Then the fish swallowed him, and he was to blame. 143. Had he not been one of those who praised. 144. He would have stayed in its belly until the Day they are raised.

Muliimu – (blameworthy), this word is Subject from ‘ilaamatun, which has been derived from la-wa-ma. ‘Ilaamatun means “to reproach, to rebuke”, that is to say, “he began to reproach himself”. It also means “to do reprehensible works”.

It is commanded: From Our those slaves; to whom We chose as Our Prophets and appointed them to warn the human beings, one of them is Jonah also (Peace be upon them). He (Peace be upon him) was sent for guidance and correction of the people of Naynwa, a Township of Mosel. These people used to be bound of own invented leaders, customs and traditions. Jonah (Peace be upon him) caused them to understand for seven years continuously that only God Almighty must be worshipped and we must follow the laws and rules prescribed by Him. The mankind has not been empowered to make laws in accordance with own will against the Laws of God Almighty. The people did not accept his advice.

 Eventually Jonah (Peace be upon him) went away from the Township; saying to the people, “You will be caught in the torment of Allaah within three days”. A ship was ready duly filled with the passengers and luggage, so he embarked. In the centre of the Sea, the Ship began to sink. Passengers of the Ship said: Any deserter slave has embarked along with us without permission of his Master. The lot was drawn in which Jonah (Peace be upon him) was nominated. So he jumped out. A big fish swallowed him. He (Peace be upon him) admitted his error and began to praise God Almighty. By it he was saved.

 It is commanded: If he did not have done so then he would have remained in the belly of fish until the Day they are raised.

Lot (Peace be upon him)

Lot (Peace be upon him) (L-2776)

إِذْ نَجَّيْنَٰهُ وَأَهْلَهُۥٓ أَجْمَعِينَ 134  إ ِلَّا عَجُوزًا فِى ٱلْغَٰبِرِينَ 135   ثُمَّ دَمَّرْنَا ٱلْءَاخَرِينَ 136   وَإِنَّكُمْ لَتَمُرُّونَ عَلَيْهِم مُّصْبِحِينَ 137   وَبِٱلَّيْلِ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ 138 (

134.  ‘Iz  najjayNaahu  wa  ‘ahlahuuu  ‘ajma-‘iina. 135.  ‘Illaa  ‘ajuuzan  fil-gaabiriin. 136.  Summa  dammarNal-‘aakhariin. 137.  Wa  ‘innakum  latamur-ruuna  ‘alayhim-musbihiina. 138.  Wa  billayl. 'Afalaa  ta’-qiluun.  (Section 4/8)

134. We saved him and his family, all of them. 135. Except for an old woman who lagged behind. 136. Then We annihilated the others. 137. You pass by them in the morning. 138. And at night. Do you not understand?

 

It is commanded: Hear the circumstance of Prophet Lot (Peace be upon him) and remember his such condition when We saved him and his family, and drove them out from the Township. After that We put the upside of the Township down and entire evildoers were destroyed. The wife of Lot (Peace be upon him) although came out from the Township along with other believers, but she continued looking behind towards the people of her folk, whereas God Almighty had forbidden from it clearly. Therefore, a stone hit her head and she died. No mankind remained living in that Township. That place became a lake of stinking water which is called “Dead Sea”.

 

After that, it is commanded: O people of Makkah! Ruins of that place still exist, and your caravans; which move towards Syria; pass nearby that place during night and day times, and they see the signs of ruined Townships. After observing, they should remember the circumstances of those people who used to live there that they were the people who denied the Prophet of God Almighty due to obstinacy and disobeyed his advice. At last they were destroyed due to their wicked deeds. It is the demand of the sense that the mankind should listen to the sayings of the Prophet (Peace be upon him) carefully and do according to his sayings. None should displease God Almighty in any case like those disobedient people. It is the way of safety from His punishment. The people who do not understand it, either they have no sense or do not use it.

Reward for doers of good (L-2775)

 

وَتَرَكْنَا عَلَيْهِ فِى ٱلْءَاخِرِينَ 129   سَلَٰمٌ عَلَىٰٓ إِلْيَاسِينَ 130   إِنَّا كَذَٰلِكَ نَجْزِى ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ 131   إِنَّهُۥ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا ٱلْمُؤْمِنِينَ 132   وَإِنَّ لُوطًا لَّمِنَ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ 133

129.  Wa  tarakNaa  ‘alayhi  fil-‘aakhiriin.   130.  Salaamun  ‘alaaa  ‘Ilyaa-siin.   131.  ‘InNaa  kazaalika  Najzil-Muhsiniin.   132.  ‘Innahuu  min  ‘ibaadiNal-Mu’-miniin.   133.  Wa  ‘inna  Luutal-laminal-Mursaliin.

129. And We left with him for later generations. 130. Peace be upon the House of Elijah. 131. Thus We reward the virtuous. 132. He was one of Our believing servants. 133. And Lot was one of the messengers.

 

Prophets of God Almighty (Peace be upon them) came for causing to understand about good works to the mankind in the world. They themselves were very true in their belief and deeds, and were best patterns of the way of life in the world for others. The people who disobeyed them and denied from choosing such path which was described by them, their end was not good in the world, and even after death too they will come in the grip of sorrow and grief. Contrary to this, best rewards of efforts will be for the Prophets (Peace be upon them) because they tried their best to do good for the mankind according to the commandments of God Almighty and for which He had promised with them.

 

Prophet Elias is also among other Prophets (Peace be upon them) and he too will be rewarded like them that he will be named in the world with respect and honor. And wise people will remember him by saying “Peace be upon Elias." The same has been said after the remembrance of every Prophet in this Chapter, reason of which has been described that they all used to do good works and worship God Almighty; having belief that He is their Lord, that is to say, they were believing slaves of God Almighty. And it has been manifested also that We reward always to believers who do good works like them, that is to say, remembrance with good names in the world and success and betterment in the Hereafter.

Then there is mention of Prophet Lot (Peace be upon him) and it is commanded that he too was among the Prophets (Peace be upon them).

إِذْ قَالَ لِقَوْمِهِۦٓ أَلَا تَتَّقُونَ 124   أَتَدْعُونَ بَعْلًا وَتَذَرُونَ أَحْسَنَ ٱلْخَٰلِقِينَ 125   ٱللَّهَ رَبَّكُمْ وَرَبَّ ءَابَآئِكُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ 126   فَكَذَّبُوهُ فَإِنَّهُمْ لَمُحْضَرُونَ 127  إ ِلَّا عِبَادَ ٱللَّهِ ٱلْمُخْلَصِينَ 128

124.  ‘Iz  qaala  liqawmihiii  ‘alaa  tattaquun.   125.  ‘A-tad-‘uuna  Ba’-lanw-wa  tazaruuna  ‘Ahsanal-Khaaliqiin.   126.  ‘Allaaha  Rabbakum  wa  Rabba  ‘aabaaa-‘ikumul-‘awwaliin.   127.  Fa-kazzabuuhu  fa-‘innahum  lamuhzaruuna.   128.  ‘Illaa  ‘ibaadAllaahil-mukhlasiin.

124. He said to his people, “Do you not fear? 125. Do you call on Baal, and forsake the Best of creators? 126. God is your Lord, and the Lord of your ancestors.” 127. But they called him a liar, and thus they will be brought forward. 128. Except for God’s sincere servants.

 

Ba’l – actual meanings of this word are chieftain and powerful, it aims “the sun and the planet Jupiter” which were adored by the people of that place and a big idol of this name was made.

 

It is commanded: Among the Messengers, Elias was also a Messenger (Peace be upon them) who did great good works during his time for the people. He was from the children of Aaron and was sent for the guidance of a Township of Syria (Lebanon). There was a great pagoda on the name of “the sun”. The people used to adore it. Prophet Elias (Peace be upon him) said to those people who belonged to his own folk: O people! You fabricated an idol yourselves, named it Ba’l and forgot Him Who is Creator of all things (God Almighty), and Who is Lord of you and your forefathers. You consider that making this idol is a great pattern of your skill. Don’t err! The Best Creator is God Almighty. Be grateful to Him.

 

Elias (Peace be upon him) caused them to understand for a long time but the people did not obey and began to say: (Let’s flee to God) You frame a lie! This sun’s idol of high dignity, which is before us, was prepared by very skilful workmen; which took a long time in fabricating and it is a top-most pattern of human workmanship. How can we leave it? We have adored it with effect from generation to generation. Big fairs are celebrated due to it and the people enjoy happily. There is pleasure of life in it.

 

It is commanded: These people will come to know after death that they were at wrong. They will be produced before Us duly arrested on the Day of Resurrection.
