يَٰصَىٰحِبَىِ ٱلسِّجْنِ أَمَّآ أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسْقِى رَبَّهُۥ خَمْرًا وَأَمَّا ٱلْءَاخَرُ فَيُصْلَبُ فَتَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِن رَّأْسِهِۦ قُضِىَ ٱلْأَمْرُ ٱلَّذِى فِيهِ تَسْتَفْتِيَانِ  (41)

وَقَالَ لِلَّذِى ظَنَّ أَنَّهُۥ نَاجٍ مِّنْهُمَا ٱذْكُرْنِى عِندَ رَبِّكَ فَأَنسَىٰهُ ٱلشَّيْطَٰنُ ذِكْرَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِى ٱلسِّجْنِ بِضْعَ سِنِينَ (42

41.  O my two fellow-prisoners! As for one of you, he will pour out wine for his lord to drink; and as for the other, he will be crucified so that the birds will eat from his head. Thus is the case judged concerning which ye did inquire. 42.  And he said unto him of the twain whom he knew would be released: Mention me in the presence of thy lord, but Satan caused him to forget to mention it to his lord, so he (Joseph) stayed in prison for some years.

41.  Yaa-saahiba-yissijni  ‘am-maaa  ‘ahadu-kumaa  fa-yasqii  rabbahuu  khamraa.  Wa  ‘am-mal-‘Aakharu  fa-yuslabu  fata’-kulut-tayru  mir-ra’-sih.  Quzi-yal-‘amrul-lazii  fiihi  tastaf-ti-yaan. 42.  Wa  qaala  lillazii  zanna  ‘annahuu  naajim-minhumaz-kurnii  ‘inda  rabbik.  Fa-‘ansaa-hush-Shay-taanu  zikra  rabbi-hii  falabisa  fis-sijni  biz-‘a  siniin.

Commentary

Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) described to both prisoners about interpretation of their dreams separately and said: One of you will pour out wine again for his lord to drink, and the other will be crucified and the birds will eat from his head. These both commandments have been prescribed for both of you, which will be certainly as I explained.

Then He {Joseph (peace be upon him)} addressed to the prisoner whom He said that he would pour wine again for his lord to drink and knew that he would be released: Mention me too in the presence of your lord.

Eventually the same happened as it was explained by Joseph (peace be upon him). Cup-bearer of the king was released from the prison and re-appointed on his ex duty. He forgot previous stories. It is a fatal attack of Satan that he causes to be careless from performing good works by ensnaring the mankind in worldly matters.

Attention of the human being can turn unto Allah Almighty by means of His one very clear Epithet, so Joseph (peace be upon him) mentioned at first about that Attribute. The mankind, if there is no disorder or disturbance, occurred in his sense and understanding, certainly feels thankful of other person. Moreover, the person who looks after his all matters and provides him comfort and all things which he needs, he becomes his admirer and says: He is my beneficent and lord. He obeys his every commandment, respects and honors him.

It is obvious that every thing of the world is for the advantage of the human being. Sun, moon, air, water, his close relatives as father, mother, brother and sister etc. all please him. He begins to consider that these all provide him every thing, therefore, he inclines towards them also, and fears them too by thinking that they are more powerful than him, being in anger, they can strike him with the open hand. Therefore he praises them falsely with his tongue, accepts their greatness and love heartily, and admits that they are his lords.

Joseph (peace be upon him) draws their attention unto the same that: these all things are useful for you. If you will say that those are your lords and you will begin to worship them, then; think for a while, how much lords would you have for adoring? Due to ignorance, every individual has chosen any thing from the above as his lord according to own preference. If a man adores the sun, other worships the moon and there are some people who adore stars, some worship their elders and forefathers. Therefore, they all have made their separate gods individually.

Is it not better that; having faith about all of the above that those entire are in subjection to One, Alone, Omnipotent, Almighty and Merciful God, Lord of every creature, and He Alone should be adored? The people, who believe in others as their gods, make-believe of the attributes of lord into them themselves. You and your forefathers have fabricated their great names. The Creator of the world has not kept any sign in it, from which, it may be proved that they have attributes of a god. On the contrary, neither they have any power and nor are able to do some thing at their own. Even those do not possess power of looking or hearing. Therefore, you should hear that whatsoever I say, meditate in it and understand. Behold! Sovereignty is only of Allah Almighty. He looks every thing and hears of every animate being. Decision of every matter rests with Him only which is last and final.

 يَٰصَىٰحِبَىِ ٱلسِّجْنِ ءَأَرْبَابٌ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيْرٌ أَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْوَٰحِدُ ٱلْقَهَّارُ (39

  مَا تَعْبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسْمَآءً سَمَّيْتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمْوَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلْطَٰنٍ إِنِ ٱلْحُكْمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعْبُدُوٓا۟ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلْقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعْلَمُونَ (40

39.  O my two fellow prisoners! Are divers lords better, or Allah the One, Almighty? 40.  Those whom ye worship beside Him are but only names which ye have named, ye and your fathers. Allah hath revealed no sanction for them. The decision rests with Allah only. He it is Who hath commanded you that ye worship none save Him. This is the Right Religion, but most men know not.

39.  Yaa-saahiba-yis-sijni  ‘a-‘arbaa-bum-mutafarri-quuna  khayrun  ‘aMillaahul-Waahidul-Qah-haar. 40.  Maa  ta’-buduuna  min-  duu-niHii  ‘illaaa  ‘asmaaa-‘an-  sam-may-tumuu-haaa  ‘antum  wa  ‘aabaaa-‘ukum-maaa  ‘anza-lAllaahu  bihaa  min-  sultaan.  ‘Inil-Hukmu  ‘illaa  Lillaah.  ‘Amara  ‘allaa  ta’-buduuu  ‘illaaa  ‘iy-yaaH.  Zaalikad-Diinul-Qayyi-mu  wa  laa-kinnaa  ‘aksaran-naasi  laa  ya’-la-muun.

Commentary

This verse contains that Message which is foundation of Islam. Islam is whole of all beauties. And with effect from the birth of mankind, the entire Prophets (peace be upon them) have taught the same till now. Joseph (peace be upon him) caused to hear this Message to His two fellow prisoners, but Holy Qur’an saved it in the cover of His story for always and for all times in the world. This verse is a soul of this entire Chapter.

   وَٱتَّبَعْتُمِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِىٓ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسْحَٰقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشْرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَىْءٍ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضْلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيْنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكْثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَايَشْكُرُونَ (38

38.  And I have followed the Religion of my fathers, Abraham and Isaac and Jacob. It beseems not (just) for us to attribute aught as partner to Allah. This is of the Bounty of Allah unto us (the seed of Abraham) and unto mankind, but most men give not thanks.

38.  Wattaba’-tu  Millata  ‘aabaaa-‘iii  ‘Ibraa-hiima  wa  ‘Is-haaqa  wa  Ya’-quub.  Maa  kaana  lanaaa  ‘an-nushrika  Billaahi  min-  shay’.  Zaalika  min-  faz-Lillaahi  ‘alay-naa  wa  ‘alannaasi  wa  laa-kinna  ‘aksa-rannaasi  laa  yash-kuruun.

Commentary

Joseph (peace be upon him) said to those both prisoners: After forsaking the religion of those people who disbelieve in Allah Almighty and the Day of Resurrection, I have followed that Religion, which was being followed by my fathers {Jacob – father, Isaac – grand-father, and Abraham – great grand-father (peace be upon them)}. None of us is ready to believe that someone else is as equal to God Almighty, or to attribute aught as partner to Him. If we behold after meditating, this Belief of God’s Oneness, which has been made manifest by Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him), is a great Bounty of Allah Almighty unto us {who are seed of Abraham (peace be upon him)} and unto the entire human beings, but maximum people from us have been losing their way and wandering hither and thither due to ignorance. They do neither value the Favors of Allah Almighty and nor feel obliged of Him.

It is known from this explanation that every individual should learn the knowledge of useful matters in accord with own ability and means, and after acquiring knowledge, one should be prepared and try to do good for others with acquired knowledge at convenient situations and suitable places.

Known from it also that there is a particular way of living which is useful for the mankind in this world and which will keep him in comfort and ease even after death. That way is “I should believe that God Almighty is One in Himself and His Attributes. No one is supplier of the wants of mine save Him, and I should never disobey Him”.

  قَالَ لَا يَأْتِيكُمَا طَعَامٌ تُرْزَقَانِهِۦٓإِلَّا نَبَّأْتُكُمَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦ قَبْلَ أَن يَأْتِيَكُمَا ذَٰلِكُمَا مِمَّا عَلَّمَنِى رَبِّىٓ إِنِّى تَرَكْتُ مِلَّةَ قَوْمٍ لَّا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱللَّهِ وَهُم بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ هُمْ كَٰفِرُونَ (37

37.  He said: The food which ye are given (daily) shall not come unto you but I shall tell you the interpretation ere it cometh unto you. This is of that which my Lord hath taught me. Lo! I have forsaken the religion of folk who believe not in Allah and are disbelievers in the Hereafter.

37.  Qaala  laa  ya’-tii-kumaa  ta-‘aamun-  turza-qaani-hiii  ‘illaa  nabba’-tukumaa  bita’-wiilihii  qabla  ‘any-ya’-tiya-kumaa.  Zaali-kumaa  mimmaa  ‘alla-manii  Rabbii.  ‘Innii  taraktu  millata  qawmil-laa  yu’-mi-nuuna  Billaahi  wa  hum-  bil-‘Aakhi-rati  hum  kaafi-ruun.

Commentary

Millata – (Religion), Diin and Millat are two names of the Law. Practical wing of the Law is called “Religion”, and by saving in offices duly in written form; the same Religion becomes Millat.

Spiritual promotion of Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) was completed during the solitude of confinement, and the prisoners and their guards (all of them) were impressive from Him (peace be upon him). He had fixed the time of interpretation regarding dreams of both prisoners that they would be informed before coming of the food. And considering the available time suitable, He (peace be upon him) began to preach them about “Oneness of God Almighty” that the knowledge which He possessed (interpretation of dreams), was taught Him (peace be upon him) by His Lord. He said: my Lord and the Lord of all of us; is He Who created every thing. He supports the entire animate beings. And all human beings will be reproduced before Him after death on a Day (the Day of Resurrection). I have chosen the same Path and forsaken the religion and path of those, who do neither believe in Allah Almighty and nor have faith in the Hereafter. Before telling you the interpretation of your dreams, I wish to tell you the commandments of this Religion. I do not know “whether you will get an opportunity of hearing these commandments again or otherwise”.

وَدَخَلَ مَعَهُ ٱلسِّجْنَ فَتَيَانِ قَالَ أَحَدُهُمَآ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَعْصِرُ خَمْرًا وَقَالَٱلْءَاخَرُ إِنِّىٓ أَرَىٰنِىٓ أَحْمِلُ فَوْقَ رَأْسِى خُبْزًا تَأْكُلُ ٱلطَّيْرُ مِنْهُ نَبِّئْنَا بِتَأْوِيلِهِۦٓ إِنَّا نَرَىٰكَ مِنَ ٱلْمُحْسِنِينَ (36

36.  And two young men went to prison with him. One of them said: I dreamed that I was pressing wine. The other said: I dreamed that I was carrying upon my head bread whereof the birds were eating. Announce unto us the interpretation, for we see thee of those good (at interpretation).

(Section 5) 36.  Wa  dakhala  ma-‘ahus-sijna  fata-yaan.  Qaala  ‘ahadu-hu-maaa  ‘inniii  ‘araa-niii  ‘a’-siru  khamraa.  Wa  qaalal-‘aakharu  ‘inniii  ‘araa-niii  ‘ahmilu  fawqa  ra’-sii  khub-zan-  ta’-kulut-tayru  minh.  Nabbi’-naa  bita’-wiilih.  ‘Innaa  naraaka  minal-Muh-siniin.

Commentary

Fata-yaan – (two young men), this word is plural of fataa, origin of which is fa-ta-wa. Fatawa means “power and strength”. Word fataa is an adjective from the same, that is to say; young man.

‘A’-siru – (I press), origin of this word is ‘a-sa-ra. ‘Asara means “to press”.

In that duration, when Joseph (peace be upon him) was in the prison, two more young men came as prisoners who were punished imprisonment. They both dreamed in the prison and described to Joseph (peace be upon him). One of them said: I dreamed that I have been pressing juice of grapes for preparing wine. The other person said: I dreamed that I have been going, carrying bread upon my head whereof the birds have been scratching and eating.

After that, each of them asked interpretation of their dreams from Joseph (peace be upon him), because they considered that He is a good and pious person. Joseph (peace be upon him) had been put in the prison, who persuaded good on the prisoners and their controllers by His good habits and behavior.

The commentators explain about those both new prisoners that they were servants of the King of Egypt, whose name was Ryan Bin Al-Walid. One of them was a cup-bearer and the other was a cook. They both were arrested with the blame that they tried to kill the King with poison. They both dreamed according to their circumstances and wished to know its interpretation.

فَٱسْتَجَابَ لَهُۥ رَبُّهُۥفَصَرَفَ عَنْهُ كَيْدَهُنَّ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلسَّمِيعُ ٱلْعَلِيمُ (34

ثُمَّ بَدَا لَهُم مِّنۢ بَعْدِ مَا رَأَوُا۟ ٱلْءَايَٰتِ لَيَسْجُنُنَّهُۥ حَتَّىٰ حِينٍ (35

34.  So his Lord heard his prayer and fended off their wiles from him. Lo! He is Hearer, Knower. 35.  And it seemed good to them after they had seen the signs (of his innocence) to imprison him for a time.

34.  Fasta-jaaba  lahuu  Rabbu-huu  fasarafa  ‘anhu  kayda-hunn.  ‘InnaHuu  Huwas-Samii-‘ul-‘Aliim. 35.  Summa  badaa  lahum-mim- ba’-di  maa  ra-‘a-wul-‘Aayaati  la-yasju-nunnahuu  hattaa  hiin.

Commentary

Joseph (peace be upon him) was repugnant naturally from the sins. He was under influence of education and training by His father Jacob (peace be upon them) that He used to engage always in good works and remembrance of Allah Almighty. Even then, there was a fear that if He (peace be upon him) lived in the same environment, then it would not be possible for Him to be saved from conspiracies and contrivances of those women; save the support of Allah Almighty.

It has been commanded in this verse: We (Allah Almighty) heard the prayer of Joseph (peace be upon him) because We hear the prayer of every individual and know. There is a lesson for us in it that there are two forms of escaping from the sins:

1.   Running away from such environment in which there is a chance of exciting evil desires.

2.   During loneliness, one should try to stop thinking about such forms which incline unto committing any evil.

These both forms demand that we should avoid bad company and attend the groups of such godly people who think good. But for being saved from the evildoers, one should neither pray in such words, which may be cause of restlessness for him, and nor he should do any such work for running out of issue, due to which any misfortune falls upon oneself. Moreover, one should ask Allah Almighty of safety always.

Being utterly sick of alluring by the women, Joseph (peace be upon him) prayed: O my Lord! Prison is more dear than that unto which they urge me, and if Thou fend not off their wiles from me, I shall incline unto them and become of the ignorant. Allah Almighty saved him (peace be upon him) from their bad company, but because demand of prison had been appeared from His tongue, therefore, Allah Almighty produced the same circumstances for being saved from the wicked people.

It is commanded: After meditating in the circumstances, at last; the people decided that Joseph (peace be upon him) should be sent into the prison for some period and they considered it good and proper for the time being that He (peace be upon him) should disappear from the sight of the ruler’s wife.
