Polytheism is entirely forbidden (L–41)

الَّذي جَعَلَ لَكُمُ الأَرضَ فِراشًا وَالسَّماءَ بِناءً وَأَنزَلَ مِنَ السَّماءِ ماءً فَأَخرَجَ بِهِ مِنَ الثَّمَراتِ رِزقًا لَكُم ۖ فَلا تَجعَلوا لِلَّهِ أَندادًا وَأَنتُم تَعلَمونَ22.

22. 'Allazi ja-'ala lakumul-'arza relative-shanw- was-samaaa-'a    binaa'a.   Wa 'anzala minas-samaaa-'i maaa-'an- fa-'akh-raja bihii minas-sama-raati rizqal-lakum. The solution to the taj-'aluu of Allah.

22.  He who made the earth a habitat for you, and the sky a structure, and sends water down from the sky, and brings out fruits thereby, as a sustenance for you. Therefore, do not assign rivals to God while you know.

Firaa-shan – (floor), the thing, which has been spreading or such solid and plain thing on which we may put our feet and walk. It is not necessary that for being plain, that thing must be a rectangular or in square form. But any round surface may also be used as a floor.

‘Andaadan – (Rivals), partners, co-sharers, confederates etc. this word is plural of nidd, which is used in Arabic language for “opponent and competitor” as well as for “like, analogous, resembling and similar” etc. therefore the meaning of this word may be “opponent and like” both.

Acquaintance about God was described in the previous verse that we must accept Him as our Creator and the Creator of the people before us. In this verse, some more Signs have been narrated. It is stated that the virtue of God as a Creator, works in the earth or mother’s womb and the mankind cannot see it. So other virtues which are obvious; have been explained, so that every individual – whether that is younger or elder; may think concerning it.

Keeping the mankind’s life in existence, producing means for its existence and conducting the human life up to the last stage of improvement gradually, is only in the powers of his Lord (God). Here it is told that He is Lord of the mankind and He is the One Who has collected all sources to keep human beings in existence after their birth. In this connection, following matters come before us for meditation:

1.   The earth, on which we live and move hither and thither, is the resting place spread by God.

2.   The sky, which has been placed over the heads of mankind by God; is like a canopy and it is the best source of light.

3.   For arrangement of food and water for daily use of mankind, He produces fruit of different colours and tastes by showering down the rains from the sky, which the mankind eats, drinks and uses for many other purposes. So it has been proved that the mankind is indigent of his Lord for existence and to remain living.

Therefore, he must perceive “the Worshipped” to the same Lord. It has also been described in this verse that the name of that Lord Who has all such virtues, is (One) God. The mankind should never make any partner or co-sharer of God. In this verse, He commanded to Worship Him only, after causing the mankind to understand and recognizing His blessings and pities, so that he may worship Him after knowing Him properly. Without acquaintance, the worshipper cannot acquire Abstinence in his heart.

21. يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ رَبَّكُمُ ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكُمْ وَٱلَّذِينَ مِن قَبْلِكُمْ لَعَلَّكُمْ تَتَّقُونَ

21. Yaaa-‘ayyu-han-naasu’-buduu Rabba-kumullazii, khalaqa-kum  wallaziina min qablikum  la-‘allakum tattaquun.

21.  O people! Worship your Lord who created you and those before you, that you may attain piety.

La-‘allakum – (so that you), in Arabic language; the word la-‘alla is used at such occasions, where there is a strong hope of coming out the result of any work.

Tattaquun - You may ward off (evil). The words muttaqii , tattaquun and taqwa etc. have been derived from the same origin. Full explanation of this word has passed in lesson # 17. Briefly speaking; it aims that your habit of living with care and having fear of God in your hearts may become strong. It is called Abstinence.

‘An-naasu – (the mankind, the people), it is the first time in Holy Qur’an that God has demanded in this verse and addressed to the human beings with the words “O mankind”. As if, He has claimed from the entire mankind to be worshippers of Him.

‘U’-buduu – (Worship, pray), this word has come out from the word ‘ibaadat, origin of which is ‘abda. it aims “obeying the Commandments of God with humility and respectfully, which is called worship and obedience”. Prayer, Fasting, Zakaat (paying the poor-due), and Pilgrimage are vital parts of worship but the worship does not come to an end on only these parts. It belongs to the entire life.

In the beginning of this Surah, good manners of Muttaqii (the pious) were explained and it was described that Holy Qur’an is Guidance for the people who fear God in their hearts. After that, condition of Infidels was narrated and then circumstances of the Hypocrites were made obvious. Now the entire Human Beings are being addressed, because after the mention of above three kinds of mankind, indeed; fondness of becoming a Sober should have been grown in the individual. So now, the root path of fearing God is being manifested.

Here; after calling the entire people, it has been described that the actual foundation of all Orders and Fidelity of Islam is to know the Lord. First purpose of creating the mankind is that he should seek his Lord, know Him from His open Revelations and he should worship only Him, and ask Him for success in this world and on the Day of Resurrection, because He created the mankind, brought him up in every era and taught the human being the ways of improvement according to own abilities.

The first Sign of the Lord is that He created you and all of them who have expired before you. Only from this acquaintance, the path of fearing God opens. There is no personal benefit of God by worshipping Him. But the mankind has a lot of advantages from it. The worship removes distress of fancies of the human being. Chapter  “NAAS” (Mankind) - 114

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 (I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)
Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلنَّاسِ 1  مَلِكِ ٱلنَّاسِ 2  إِلَٰهِ ٱلنَّاسِ 3  مِن شَرِّ ٱلْوَسْوَاسِ ٱلْخَنَّاسِ 4  ٱلَّذِى يُوَسْوِسُ فِى صُدُورِ ٱلنَّاسِ 5  مِنَ ٱلْجِنَّةِ وَٱلنَّاسِ 6

1.  Qul  ‘a-'uuzu  bi-Rabbin-NAAS.  2.  Malikin-Naas.  3.  ‘Ilaahin-Naas.  4.  Min  sharril-Waswaasil- khan-naas.  5.  ‘Allazii  yu-waswisu  fii  suduurin-Naas.  6.  Minal-Jinnati  wan-Naas. (Section 1/39)

1. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind,  2. The King of mankind,  3. The God of mankind,  4. From the evil of the sneaking whisperer,  5. Who whispers in the hearts of mankind,  6. Of the jinn and of mankind.

In accordance with the Qur’anic order, this is one hundred fourteenth Chapter of Holy Qur’an, which was revealed in Madinah. These last two Chapters are recited for seeking refuge in Allaah from internal and external evils. It has been taught in these Chapters that all creatures including mankind are under the control of Allaah Almighty.

It is commanded: Seek refuge from the evil of the retreating whisperer who whispers evil into the breasts of mankind in such a way: I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, The Sovereign of mankind, The God of mankind, that is to say, Allaah Almighty, from the evil of the sneaking whisperer, who whispers in the hearts of mankind when considers that he is careless, whether that is from the jinn or from the mankind.

The person, who will recite these both Chapters regularly, will be saved from all kinds of evils.

At the end of this Chapter, Commentary of the Last Scripture (Holy Qur’an) is over. The mankind should understand it thoroughly that Holy Qur’an is sent by Allaah Almighty for the guidance of the entire human beings of the world. It is not for any particular sect, class, country or nation, but it teaches the way of living to all whether they dwell in any part of the world. First of all, every mankind must believe in:

1.   The world has been running according to a prescribed Rule and Law.

2.  Its Creator is Allaah Almighty, Who does not have any partner in His works, but Muhammad is His last Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

3.  Mankind’s life is not only the life of this world, but his actual life will begin after death.

4.  Mankind must do every work according to Commandments of Holy Qur’an and abstain from such works which are forbidden in it. It is the way of correction of his next life (on the Day of Resurrection).

Alas! Being entangled in false imaginations, the mankind did not pay full attention to Holy Qur’an. Some people said that it was sent only for the people of the Arab, they should believe in it if they wish. Some of them said: There are many other works to do. We do not have so much time to meditate in its verses. In short, most of them turned away from Holy Qur’an. However those who believed in it, they did not produce it before the world properly. Resultant, the mankind considers that the development of the world is the actual work. Alas! Its consequence is nothing but destruction. O mankind! Be prudent!

Chapter  “FALAQ” (The Day Break) - 113

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful) 

قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ ٱلْفَلَقِ 1  مِن شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ 2  وَمِن شَرِّ غَاسِقٍ إِذَا وَقَبَ 3  وَمِن شَرِّ ٱلنَّفَّٰثَٰتِ فِى ٱلْعُقَدِ 4  وَمِن شَرِّ حَاسِدٍ إِذَا حَسَدَ5

1.  Qul ‘a-‘uuzu  bi-Rabbil-FALAQ.  2.  Min-  sharri  maa  khalaq.  3.  Wa  min  sharri gaasiqin  ‘izaa  waqab.  4.  Wa  min- sharrin-Naffaa-saati  fil-'uqad.  5.  Wa  min-sharri  haasidin  ‘izaa  hasad. (Section 1/38)

1. Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of the Daybreak  2. From the evil of that which He created;  3. From the evil of the darkness when it is intense,  4. And from the evil of malignant witchcraft,  5. And from the evil of the envier when he envies.

In accordance with Qur’anic order this is one hundred thirteenth Chapter. It was revealed in Madinah. It has been taught in this Chapter that the mankind has been surrounded in many dangers, which have been spreading around him in the world. For saving himself from all such dangers, he must recite: I seek refuge in the Lord of daybreak from the evil of that which He created, and beg for my safety from the wickedness of the entire creatures, particularly from the evil of darkness when it settles and from the evil of the blowers in knots and from the evil of an envier when he envies to molest me.

There were some such women in Arab who used to curse any mankind and blow in knots. Then they used to bury those weaved knots anywhere in the earth. By this the cursed and effected person was molested. This trick was also used by the women for troubling the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

In this Chapter, it is instructed: Seek refuge in Allaah from every evil and recite this Chapter by your tongues. Your hearts will get strength from it and no one will be able to harm you.

Chapter  “’IKHLAAS” (The Unity) - 112

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ أَحَدٌ 1  ٱللَّهُ ٱلصَّمَدُ 2  لَمْ يَلِدْ وَلَمْ يُولَدْ 3  وَلَمْ يَكُن لَّهُۥ كُفُوًا أَحَدٌۢ 4

1.  Qul HuwAllaahu  ‘Ahad.  2.  ‘Allaahus-Samad.  3.  Lam  yalid  wa  lam  yuulad.  4.  Wa  lam  yakul-laHuu  kufuwan  ‘ahad. (Section 1/37)

1. Say: He is Allah, the One!  2. Allah, the eternally Besought of all!  3. He begets not nor was begotten.  4. And there is none comparable unto Him.

When idolaters of Arab saw the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) preventing from the worship of any other than Allaah Almighty, they asked: Explain! How like Allaah (God) is? In its reply; this Chapter was revealed, in which a clear concept of Allaah has been presented.

It was commanded: Allaah is One in His Kind and Attributes. He does not need support of any other, but He Himself is Supporter for everyone. He neither begets nor is born by means of parents and nor is there to Him any equivalent. Then how can any female be His wife because that must be equal of Him?

Thoughts of entire sects, for example, the fire-worshippers, the Jews, the Christians etc. have been proved to be wrong in this Chapter which they have concerning Allaah Almighty.

According to Qur’anic order, number of this Chapter is one hundred twelve. It has been included among those Chapters which were revealed during primary days of Islam in Makkah. All such thoughts have been rejected in it which the people had determined concerning Allaah Almighty. Magi people have faith that there are two gods – Yazdan (God of goodness) and ‘Aharman (God of evil). Some people consider that God is also necessitous of such things which are required for a mankind - as courtiers, servants and helpers etc. Some are the people who consider that God has a son, and they ascribe a mankind equal of Him. In this Chapter, all such thoughts have been falsified. And there is a lesson of “The Oneness of God” in it purely. The person who desires to know that what the concept of Allaah in Islam is, he must read this Chapter and meditate in it.

Chapter  “LAHAB” (Palm-Fibre) - 111

تَبَّتْ يَدَآ أَبِى لَهَبٍ وَتَبَّ 1  مَآ أَغْنَىٰ عَنْهُ مَالُهُۥ وَمَا كَسَبَ 2  سَيَصْلَىٰ نَارًا ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ 3  وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ حَمَّالَةَ ٱلْحَطَبِ 4  فِى جِيدِهَا حَبْلٌ مِّن مَّسَدٍۭ 5

1.  Tabbat  yadaaa  ‘Abii  Lahabinw-wa  tabb.  2.  Maaa  ‘agnaa  'anhu  maalu-huu  wa  maa kasab.  3.  Sa-yaslaa  Naaran-  zaata LAHAB.  4.  Wamra-‘atuh. Hammaa-latal-hatab.  5.  FII  jIIdihaa  hablum-mim-masad. (Section 1/36)

1. The power of Abu Lahab will perish, and he will perish.  2. His wealth and gains will not exempt him.  3. He will be plunged in flaming Fire,  4. And his wife, the wood-carrier,  5. Will have upon her neck a halter of palm-fibre.

Abdul-‘Uzaa bin Abdil-Mutlib, whose title was Abu Lahab because he was handsome, he was real paternal uncle of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) but his worst enemy. Lahab means “flame or blow of the fire”. He used to throw stones on the Messenger.

Hammaa-latal-hatab – (the carrier of firewood), it is heard that his wife, named “Ummi Jamil”, used to pick up and bring firewood herself from the forest, whereas she was rich but stingy. She used to spread thorny bushes in the path of the Messenger to molest him.

It is commanded: Abu Lahab used to seduce the people by his conversation by winking his hands. His hands would be broken and he himself would be ruined. His children and earnings would not be of his use. He would be disgraced in the world and after death he would enter to burn in a Fire of blazing flame. His wife also who is the carrier of firewood, would be tormented and around her neck would be a rope of twisted fibre, by which she binds the bundle of firewood and she will die.

It has been explained in this Chapter that surely the enemies of Allaah Almighty will be destroyed, whether they are close relatives of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) or they have wealth and children. But nothing can save them.

This is one-eleventh Chapter according to Qur’anic order. It was revealed in favor of Abu Lahab and his wife. And there was a prediction of their destruction in it. After seven days of the Battle of Badr, due to a poisonous pimple, Abu Lahab was driven away from his house. After his death, Abyssinian slaves threw his dead body in a ditch by wood.
