Commentary

Khaashi-‘uuna – (they are humble, they make themselves submissive), this word is plural of khaashi-‘un, which is the Subject from khasha-‘a. Khashuu-‘un means “to be silent due to fear of Allaah Almighty”.

‘Al-lagwi – (vain conversation, nonsensical talk, absurd), such work or talk in which there is no useful thing.

Mu’-rizuuna – (they shun, avoid, try to escape), this word is from ‘i’-raaz, which has been derived from ‘arz. ‘Arz means “aloof, aside”. ‘I’-raaz means “to withdraw, to keep aloof”.

Islam desires that the mankind should work in such a way that its result should come out good and such deeds should be adopted, by which you all may live in peace and others also may dwell with pleasure and comfort. When this Chapter was revealed, at that time the Muslims were in worse condition in Makkah. Apparently it seemed that opponents would crowd, assault and cut them in pieces. The Muslims were getting ready to move for Madinah by leaving their homes to save themselves. In such frightful condition, it is being proclaimed openly and clearly that the people, who will believe in Allaah Almighty, will at last be successful. They will be honored in the world as well as they will dwell in peace in the life after death for ever, because they did such works during their worldly life which became cause of their success in the both worlds. They make themselves submissive in their prayers, try to escape from nonsensical talk and slip away from those who commit worthless works. They pay the poor-due regularly for the help of needy people.
