101. So We gave him
tidings of a gentle son.
102. So when he (his
son) was old enough to walk with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I have
seen in a dream that I am sacrificing thee. So look, what thinkest thou? He
said: O my father! Do that which thou art commanded. Allah willing, thou
shalt find me of the steadfast.

Commentary
It is commanded: We accepted prayer of Abraham (peace be upon
him) and gave him good tidings that a boy would
be born at his home who would be forbearing and gentle. He was his first son
Ishmael (peace be upon them), because he was born due to Abraham’s
prayer. After him, Isaac (peace be upon him) was born; for whom he did not
pray. But wife of Abraham (peace be upon him) was astonished when she heard
good tidings concerning the birth of a son during old age.
It is commanded: When Ishmael reached
with Abraham (peace be upon them) the age
of exertion, then on a day, Abraham (peace be upon him) caused to hear
him his dream and said: O my son, indeed I have
seen in a dream that I must sacrifice you. It is on the record that he (peace
be upon him) saw the same in his dream for three
continuous nights, then he was sure that it was a Commandment from Allaah
Almighty. Then he described to his son and asked: What is your opinion in this
matter? Ishmael (peace be upon him) replied at the spot: O my father, do as you are commanded. You will find me
steadfast when you will sacrifice me, if Allah wills. It is called obedience of
Allaah Almighty which was shown by both – father and son (peace
be upon them).
