Explanation of past similitude (L-331)
Historians have different views about the ruined township, which was mentioned in the previous lesson. However, most of the scholars imagine that it was Jerusalem, which was ruined by the king of Babel (Bukht Nasr). This example has been described to show the Token of Power and Greatness of God. Bukht Nasr attacked over the township of Jerusalem, destroyed it and brought forth many people of the Children of Israel; making them prisoners.
When Prophet Ezra (Peace be upon him) reached there after freedom from the imprisonment, he saw a ruined township in his way, the buildings of which had become upside down. After looking this, he (Peace be upon him) thought that the entire citizens of this place had died. How would God give this township life after its destruction? Therefore, God made him dead at the spot, and his ass, which was for his conveyance, remained dead also for one hundred years. Neither any person saw them in this condition, and nor information of that place spread out.
Meanwhile, Bukht Nasr died too and the Jerusalem was populated by another king. After one hundred years, God brought him (peace be upon jim) back to life. His food and drinking water had been laid just like fresh (which had not perished). His ass had died and its bones were rotten, which became alive before him (Peace be upon him). During these one hundred years, the children of Israel had gotten freedom and re-populated this township.
When Prophet Ezra (Peace be upon him) died, the sun had risen, but when he was brought to life again, the sun had not yet set. So, when God asked him, “How long have you tarried here?” after thinking he (Peace be upon him) told, “I have tarried a day or a part of a day”.
In the presence of Prophet Ezra (Peace be upon him) the entire bones of ass assembled in its body with correct arrangement. Then God covered them with flesh and skin, and at last; the ass was alive with God’s Command and stood up.
Prophet Ezra (Peace be upon him) said after looking this entire situation, “I have believed that indeed God is Able to do all things. Although I did know already that it is very easy for God to give life to the dead, now I have seen it with my own eyes”. Later on, when he (Peace be upon him) reached Jerusalem from there, no body recognized him because he was still young and those who were infants, had become very old.
When he caused to hear (recited) Torah by heart, then the people believed in him (Peace be upon him). The aim of telling this story is that it is not distant from the Power of God to give life to the dead; it is extremely easy for Him also. Occurrence of the Day of Resurrection is Sure, when the entire dead bodies will get life immediately.
Every individual should bear in mind that the name of that township has neither been described in Holy Qur’an, nor its aim is to mention these types of historical happenings as history, and nor we recite the Word of God in historical manner.
