Messengers of Allah came unto Lot

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

  وَلَمَّاجَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَا لُوطًا سِىٓءَ بِهِمْ وَضَاقَ بِهِمْ ذَرْعًا وَقَالَ هَٰذَا يَوْمٌ عَصِيبٌ (77 

 وَجَآءَهُۥ قَوْمُهُۥ يُهْرَعُونَ إِلَيْهِ وَمِن قَبْلُ كَانُوا۟ يَعْمَلُونَٱلسَّيِّـَٔاتِ (78  .a

   

77.  And when Our Messengers came unto Lot, he was distressed and knew not how to protect them and he said: This is a distressful day. 78a.  And his people came unto him, running towards him. And before then they used to commit abominations.

77.  Wa  lammaa  jaaa-‘at  Rusu-luNaa  Luutan  siii-‘a  bihim  wa  zaaqa  bihim  zar-‘anw-wa  qaala  haazaa  yaw-mun  ‘asiib. 78a.  Wa  jaaa-‘ahuu  qaw-muhuu  yuhra-‘uuna  ‘ilayh.  Wa  min  qablu  kaanuu  ya’-maluu-nas-sayyi-‘aat.

Commentary

Zar-‘un – (the heart, self, mind), actually za-ra-‘a means “to measure”, then it was meant “to move”, and then its meaning became “spirit, strength, power”. Because these things exist in the heart, so the people began to use it as “heart”.

‘Asiibun – (distressful), this word is an adjective, which has been derived from ‘a-sa-ba. ‘Asab means “muscle, nerve, tendon”. ‘Asiib means “straitened, distressed, difficult”. 

Yuhra-‘uuna – (were caused to run), this word is from ‘ih-raa-‘un, which has come out from ha-ra-‘a. hara-‘a mean “to run”. ‘Ih-raa-‘un means “to cause to run”. It aims that their wish (in the inmost) was compelling them to run fast.

When the Angels (peace be upon them) reached Prophet Lot (peace be up[on him) in the forms of beautiful and handsome youths and said: We have come unto you as guests. Lot (peace be up[on him) was confused because He was aware of the habit of His nation that they would not miss any chance to oppress them and it came out from His mouth: This is a distressful day. We don’t know how this day would be passed. The people of the folk had lost their wits when they saw the guests and came running unto them impatiently, because before then; they had become habitual of committing abominations unhesitatingly.

The only purpose of Angels’ coming unto Lot (peace be upon them) was to find eye evidence on their sin of committing carnal copulation against nature, and they should not be punished so much severely without proof.

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

 فَلَمَّا ذَهَبَعَنْ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ ٱلرَّوْعُ وَجَآءَتْهُ ٱلْبُشْرَىٰ يُجَٰدِلُنَا فِى قَوْمِ لُوطٍ 74

إِنَّ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ لَحَلِيمٌ أَوَّٰهٌ مُّنِيبٌ (75

 يَٰٓإِبْرَٰهِيمُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَٰذَآ إِنَّهُۥ قَدْ جَآءَ أَمْرُ رَبِّكَ وَإِنَّهُمْ ءَاتِيهِمْ عَذَابٌ غَيْرُ مَرْدُودٍ (76

   

74.  And when the awe departed from Abraham, and the glad news reached him, he pleaded with Us on behalf of the folk of Lot. 75.  Lo! Abraham was mild, imploring, penitent. 76.  (It was said) O Abraham! Forsake this! Lo! Thy Lord’s commandment hath gone forth, and lo! There cometh unto them a doom which cannot be repelled.

74.  Falammaa  zahaba  ‘an  ‘Ibraa-hiimar-raw-‘u  wa jaaa-‘at-hul-bushraa  yujaa-diluNaa  fii  Qawmi  Luut. 75.  ‘Inna  ‘Ibraa-hiima  la-halii-mun  ‘awwaa-hum-muniib. 76.  Yaaa-‘Ibraa-hiimu  ‘a’-riz  ‘an  haazaa.  ‘Innahuu  qad  jaaa-‘a  ‘amru  Rabbik.  Wa  ‘inna-hum  ‘aatii-him  ‘azaabun  gayru  mar-duud.

Commentary

‘Awwaa-hun – (imploring), this word is an adjective which has been derived fro ‘a-wa-hun. ‘A-wa-hun means “to utter grief in outcries, to lament”. ‘Awwaa-hun is the person who mourns when he sees any other in trouble.

After hearing glad news from the Angels (peace be upon them), all awe of Abraham (peace be upon him) departed. When he got satisfaction from this side; then thought about the folk of Lot (peace be upon them); that they would be ruined.

Naturally, Messenger Abraham (peace be upon him) was imploring and forgiver of the wrongdoers, who used to get support of Allah Almighty. He (peace be upon him) began to argue with the Angels concerning the folk of Lot (peace be upon him). That conversation between the Angels and Abraham (peace be upon them) has been named by Allah Almighty as yujaa-diluNaa (he pleaded with Us). Allah Almighty describes its reason that Abraham (peace be upon him) was mild; who used to excuse the sinner, imploring; who used to lament by observing others in difficulties, and penitent; who used to produce every matter in the Court of Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty commanded about the intercession by Abraham (peace be upon him) for the folk of Lot (peace be upon him) that their matter has passed from the limit of recommendation. Now they cannot be given respite even for a moment, because they have been destroying social life of the human beings by carnal copulation against nature (sodomy).

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

   قَالَتْ يَٰوَيْلَتَىٰٓ ءَأَلِدُ وَأَنَا۠ عَجُوزٌ وَهَٰذَا بَعْلِى شَيْخًا إِنَّهَٰذَا لَشَىْءٌ عَجِيبٌ (72

 قَالُوٓا۟ أَتَعْجَبِينَ مِنْ أَمْرِ ٱللَّهِ رَحْمَتُ ٱللَّهِ وَبَرَكَٰتُهُۥ عَلَيْكُمْ أَهْلَ ٱلْبَيْتِ إِنَّهُۥ حَمِيدٌ مَّجِيدٌ (73

   

72.  She said: Oh woe is me! Shall I bear a child when I am an old woman, and this my husband is an old man? Lo! This is a strange thing! 73.  They said: Wonderest thou at the Commandment of Allah? The Mercy of Allah and His Blessings be upon you, O People of the House! Lo! He is Owner of Praise, Owner of Glory!

72.  Qaalat  yaa-way-lataaa  ‘a-‘alidu  wa  ‘anaa  ‘ajuu-zunw-wa  haazaa  ba’-lii  shay-khaa.  ‘Inna  haazaa  la-shay-‘un  ‘ajiib. 73.  Qaaluuu  ‘ata’-jabiina  min  ‘AmRillaahi  Rahma-tUllaahi  wa  Barakaatu-Huu  ‘alay-kum  ‘Ahlal-Bayt.  ‘Inna-Huu  Hamii-dum-Majiid.

Commentary

Yaa-way-lataaa – (Oh woe is me), meanings of the words “way-lun” and “way-latun” are “woe, heavy calamity, sorrow, an exclamation of grief, ruin and depravity etc. Actually this word is Yaa-way-lataa-hu, as though; someone calls to his misfortune and harm. When a person hears suddenly about any uncommon matter, he talks incoherently and such words come out from his mouth which have no meanings save it that he uses the words astonished with wonder.

The name of the wife of Prophet Abraham (peace be upon them) was Saarah. They had no child. However They were desiring of children always. Saarah was very aged woman at that time. When the Angels (peace be upon them) gave good tidings of a son, there was no limit of wonder and she spoke immediately without thinking: Oh woe is me! In this age, I shall bear a child while I am an old woman and my husband is also an old man. It is a wonderful thing.

The Angels (peace be upon them) answered: What is strange in it? Your house is such a place where Mercy and Blessings of Allah Almighty are sent down usually, and nothing is out of His Control.

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

فَلَمَّا رَءَآ أَيْدِيَهُمْ لَا تَصِلُ إِلَيْهِ نَكِرَهُمْ وَأَوْجَسَ مِنْهُمْ خِيفَةً قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ إِنَّآ أُرْسِلْنَآ إِلَىٰ قَوْمِ لُوطٍ (70

  وَٱمْرَأَتُهُۥ قَآئِمَةٌ فَضَحِكَتْ فَبَشَّرْنَٰهَا بِإِسْحَٰقَ وَمِن وَرَآءِ إِسْحَٰقَ يَعْقُوبَ (71

   

70.  But when he saw their hands reached not to it, he deemed them strange and conceived a fear of them. They said: Fear not! Lo! We are sent unto the folk of Lot. 71.  And his wife, standing by, laughed so We gave her good tidings (of the birth) of Isaac, and, after Isaac, of Jacob.

70.  Fa-lammaa  ra-‘aaa  ‘aydi-yahum  laa  tasilu  ‘ilay-hi  naki-rahum  wa  ‘awjasa  minhum  khii-fah.  Qaaluu  laa  takhaf  ’innaaa  ‘ur-silnaaa  ‘ilaa  Qawmi  Luut. 71.  Wamra-‘atuhuu  qaaa-‘ima-tun  faza-hikat  fabash-sharnaa-haa  bi-‘Is-haaqa,  wa  minw-waraaa-‘i  ‘Is-haaqa  Ya’-quub.

Commentary

The Angels (peace be upon them) came unto Abraham (peace be upon him) in the appearance of human beings. He (peace be upon him) prepared food and brought for them considering that they were mankind, but when Abraham (peace be upon him) felt that They were not going to take food, then He saw Them carefully. After that, unusual impressions of fear and dignity appeared on the face of Abraham (peace be upon him). At that place, it was a fixed custom also that the person, who did not eat or drink from the house of any other, was considered that, “certainly he has come with any evil thought”. It was the reason that terror was born in the heart of Abraham (peace be upon him).

When the Angels (peace be upon them) observed this condition, they soothed Abraham (peace be upon him) and said: You should not fear. We are sent by Allah Almighty and have come for destruction of the folk of Lot (peace be upon him), and for giving you good tidings. After hearing this, the wife of Abraham (peace be upon him), who was standing nearby, laughed with happiness. The Angels (peace be upon them) said: We give you good tidings that a son of yours will be born, whose name will be Isaac. With the passage of time, a son will be born in the house of Isaac, whose name will be Jacob (peace be upon them).

وَلَقَدْ جَآءَتْ رُسُلُنَآ إِبْرَٰهِيمَ بِٱلْبُشْرَىٰ قَالُوا۟ سَلَٰمًا قَالَ سَلَٰمٌ فَمَالَبِثَ أَن جَآءَ بِعِجْلٍ حَنِيذٍ (69

   

69.  And Our Messengers came unto Abraham with good news. They said: Peace! He answered: Peace! And delayed not to bring a roasted calf.

69.  Wa  laqad  jaaa-‘at  Rusulu-Naaa  ‘Ibraa-hiima  bil-bushraa  qaaluu  Salaamaa.  Qaala  Salaamun-  famaa  labisa  ‘an-  jaaa-‘a  bi-‘ijlin-  haniiz.

Commentary

Haniizin – (roasted), it is an adjective, origin of which is ha-na-za. Hanaza means “to roast, to fry”. Haniiz means roasted meat etc.

In this Surah (Chapter), circumstances of those Prophets (peace be upon them) have been mentioned who came in the duration of Prophet Noah to Moses and Aaron (peace be upon them). The aim of describing those incidents in Holy Qur’an at various place; is to console the last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and along with it; to warn the people that those who disobey their Prophets (peace be upon them) and trouble them, consequence of theirs is nothing but ruin and destruction. In this regard, “which behavior was adopted by the nations of all above mentioned Prophets (peace be upon them) with them and resultant, how were they ruined” has been explained.

Prophet Lot (peace be upon him) and his folk has been described in this entire Section. Allah Almighty appointed Lot (peace be upon him) as a Prophet for the people of Jordan so that He (peace be upon him) should guide them unto the right path.

The Angels (peace be upon them) came; at first; unto Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) in the form of mankind and said: Peace! Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) answered them also with the word “Peace” and hurriedly went to arrange for food of those guests. He (peace be upon him) sacrificed a calf, fried it on the fire, and then brought it for the guests, to whom He (peace be upon him) considered that they were human beings due to their apparent condition.  

Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) was very famous for warm reception of the guests. According to His (peace be upon him) habit, at first, He thought about their provisions. He (peace be upon him) did not know that they were Angels (peace be upon them).

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

  وَأَخَذَ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُوا۟ ٱلصَّيْحَةُ فَأَصْبَحُوا۟ فِى دِيَٰرِهِمْ جَٰثِمِينَ 67

كَأَن لَّمْ يَغْنَوْا۟ فِيهَآ أَلَآ إِنَّ ثَمُودَا۟ كَفَرُوا۟ رَبَّهُمْ أَلَا بُعْدًا لِّثَمُودَ (68

   

67.  And the (awful) Cry overtook those who did wrong, so that morning found them prostrate in their dwellings- 68.  As though that had not dwelt there. Beware! Thamud disbelieved in their Lord. Beware! A far removal for Thamud!

67.  Wa  ‘akhazal-laziina  zalamus-Sayhatu  fa-‘asbahuu  fii  di-yaarihim  jaasi-miina- 68.  Ka-‘allam  yagnaw  fiihaa.  ‘Alaaa  ‘inna  Samuuda  kafa-ruu  Rabba-hum.  ‘Alaa  bu’-dal-li-Samuud.  (Section 7)

Commentary

Promises and denunciations by Allah Almighty are eternal and an epithet of the Deity. Surely, that will happen whichever He has described in His Scripture and whichever His Messengers (peace be upon them) have spoken. But a time has been fixed for it. When such time comes; then there is no delay and whatsoever is required to be, that; it is immediately.

The folk of Thamud had built their dwellings by cutting great rocks of the mountain, most probably with this thought that they would remain safe from the issue of dust-storms. They were aware that the mountains do not move by dust-storms, but they did not know that a way of ruining the mountains exists also. Jerks of earthquakes began when they were sleeping at night and besides it, a terrible rumbling noise and a harsh thunder was born.

Consequent, that earthquake threw them down from their beds and their gall-bladders were cracked by thundering sound. In the morning, they were found prostrate on the earth. And then it became all quiet and silent everywhere. And it seemed that this land was uninhabited since long. It was the tribe of Thamud which did not know their Lord. And at last, they were removed from the world. Allah Almighty has caused to hear their story for the purpose that we should be careful and become conscious before arrival of misfortune from Allah Almighty. Beware! A far removal for Thamud.

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

فَلَمَّا جَآءَ أَمْرُنَا نَجَّيْنَا صَٰلِحًا وَٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟مَعَهُۥ بِرَحْمَةٍ مِّنَّا وَمِنْ خِزْىِ يَوْمِئِذٍ إِنَّ رَبَّكَ هُوَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْعَزِيزُ (66

   

66.  So when Our Commandment came to pass, We saved Salih, and those who believed with him, by a Mercy from Us, from the ignominy of that Day. Lo! Thy Lord! He is the Strong, the Mighty.

66.  Falammaa  jaaa-‘a  ‘Amru-Naa  najjay-Naa  Saa-lihanw-wallaziina  ‘aamanuu  ma-‘ahuu  bi-Rahmatim-minNaa  wa  min  khiz-yi  Yawmi-‘iz.  ‘Inna  Rabbaka  Huwal-Qawiyyul—‘Aziiz.

Commentary

Pleasure of the world is only apparent happiness, but it contains much intoxication, in the fancy of which, mankind becomes careless from his original condition. The same state of intoxication is of the liquor, which makes the mankind; not only careless from any misfortune; but charms in imaginary gladness. Then, for keeping up this ideal pleasure, he drinks again and again, so that the intoxication should not lessen and the fascination should be preserved in thought.

In the same way, lovers of worldly pleasure try to maintain it, so that they may forget the actual matters always in its intoxication, which desire to guide the human being towards the Right Path. The Messengers of Allah Almighty (peace be upon them) want to shake off the mankind from such intoxication, so that their sense may begin to work positively. The human beings should not give any importance to the pleasantness of this life because it is just like a bubble of water. The life should appear before him in its original color, so that he may observe that it is a field; full of thorns and shrubs. He would have to cross it carefully by saving his clothes, so that he may reach the Straight Path of God’s Cognizance, then move on it during life time and try to acquire pleasure of Allah Almighty wholeheartedly.

The tribe of Thamud did not seek this Path; although Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) caused to know them. Ultimately, Allah Almighty sends His Commandment to anyone of the worldly forces; which He has produced: Destroy this rebellious nation. His Commandment is obeyed immediately and the obstinate people are slain, the death of disgrace. Allah Almighty saves Prophet Salih (peace be upon him) along with his companions who believed, from the ignominy, by a mercy from Him. All forces and powers of the world are proved as a spider’s web when Power of Allah Almighty appears.
