Demand of tribute

Chapter “Mu’-minuun” – (The Believers) - 23

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 (I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

أَمْ تَسْـَٔلُهُمْ خَرْجًافَخَرَاجُ رَبِّكَ خَيْرٌ وَهُوَ خَيْرُ ٱلرَّٰزِقِينَ 72  وَإِنَّكَ لَتَدْعُوهُمْ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ 73  وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ بِٱلْءَاخِرَةِ عَنِ ٱلصِّرَٰطِ لَنَٰكِبُونَ 74  

72.  Or dost thou ask of them (O Muhammad) any tribute? But the Bounty of thy Lord is better, and He is Best of all who make provision. 73.  And lo! Thou summonest them indeed unto a straight path. 74.  And lo! Those who believe not in the Hereafter are indeed astray from the path.

72.  ‘Am  tas-‘aluhum  kharjan  fa-kharaaju  Rabbika  khayr;  wa  Huwa  Khayrur-raaziqiin. 73.  Wa  ‘innaka  latad-‘uuhum  ‘ilaa  Siraatim-Mustaqiim. Part One-Fourth) 74.  Wa  ‘innallaziina  laa  yu’-minuuna  bil-‘Aakhirati  ‘anis-Siraati  la-naakibuun.

Commentary

Kharja and  kharaajun – origin of the both words is kharj. Khuruuj means “issue, act of going out or exit”. The word Kharj has been converted in Urdu language as kharch. Kharch means “the thing which is given from own wealth to someone else as remuneration, tax and fee etc.

Naakibuuna – (those who go astray, turn away), this word is plural of naakib, which has been derived from nakab and it is the Subject. Nakuub means “to go astray from the right path”.

It is commanded: One reason of their disbelieving could also be that Muhammad, the last Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) desires to make them his followers for the purpose that he may receive his expenses from them and fix a portion from their earnings for himself as despotic kings do usually or self-made leaders receive with force from others as offerings and tributes.

Therefore, Allaah be praised, O Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)! You are not necessitous of it. Your Lord’s Grant is Best for you and it is entirely sufficient for you. He is the Best Supplier of the means of subsistence. You are not needy of looking unto others for fulfillment of your necessaries. You summon them unto the Straight Path. And it is the News that the people, who do not believe in the Day of Resurrection, as these people do not have belief in the Hereafter, they go astray from the right path. In fact, it is very difficult to set up the person on the straight Path, who does not have faith in reward and punishment after death. So he will go astray.

Chapter “Mu’-minuun” – (The Believers) - 23

أَمْ يَقُولُونَ بِهِۦ جِنَّةٌۢبَلْ جَآءَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَٰرِهُونَ 70  

وَلَوِ ٱتَّبَعَ ٱلْحَقُّ أَهْوَآءَهُمْ لَفَسَدَتِ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتُ وَٱلْأَرْضُ وَمَن فِيهِنَّ بَلْ أَتَيْنَٰهُم بِذِكْرِهِمْ فَهُمْ عَن ذِكْرِهِم مُّعْرِضُونَ 71  

70b.  Nay, but he bringeth them the Truth; and most of them are haters of the Truth. 71.  And if the Truth had followed their desires, verily the heavens and the earth and whosoever is therein had been corrupted. Nay, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder they now turn away.

70b.  Bal  jaaa-‘ahum  bil-Haqqi  wa  ‘aksaruhum  lil-Haqqi  kaarihuun. 71.  Wa  la-wittaba-‘al-Haqqu  ‘ahwaaa-‘ahum  lafasadatis-samaawaatu  wal-‘arzu  wa  man-  fiihinn.  Bal  ‘atayNaa-hum-  bi-Zikrihim  fahum  ‘an-  Zikrihim-mu’-rizuun.

Commentary

Zikr – (Reminder), it aims such matters; upon which welfare of the mankind depends. The person who rejects the matter of his welfare, is ignorant.

It is commanded: These all are their vain imaginations and establishment of separate groups which have been removing them away from the Right Path. Those people who will listen to the verses of Holy Qur’an carefully and understand them, they will find certainly the Right Path. Our Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is neither unaware and nor (God forbid) there is any madness in him. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is a truthful, upright, honest and sincere person. We chose him from the entire human beings of the world and sent Our Message for all the people of the world by means of him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), which is a true and strict Message.

It did suit to the people of Arab that they had to hear his sayings minutely and become guide of the world themselves under his (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) supervision. But it is the misfortune that the Truth appears bitter for the ignorant and maximum of them are found as immature that they turn up their noses and knit their eyebrows because the Truth dashes with their worldly temporary benefits.

O ignorant people! If The True Lord and The Guardian of the entire worlds had followed your wishes, then the creatures of the heavens, the earth and between them would have been ruined. Be attentive! Your sayings are like of idiots. In fact, We have described you all useful matters by means of Our Chosen Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). If you gripped up your loins on rejecting the matters useful for you then surely you have become negligent.

Chapter “Mu’-minuun” – (The Believers) - 23

أَفَلَمْ يَدَّبَّرُوا۟ ٱلْقَوْلَ أَمْ جَآءَهُم مَّا لَمْ يَأْتِ ءَابَآءَهُمُ ٱلْأَوَّلِينَ 68  أَمْ لَمْ يَعْرِفُوا۟ رَسُولَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَهُۥ مُنكِرُونَ 69  أَمْ يَقُولُونَ بِهِۦ جِنَّةٌۢبَلْ جَآءَهُم بِٱلْحَقِّ وَأَكْثَرُهُمْ لِلْحَقِّ كَٰرِهُونَ 70  

68.  Have they not pondered the World, or hath that come unto them which came not unto their fathers of old? 69.  Or know they not their Messenger, and so reject him? 70a.  Or say they: There is a madness in him?

68.  ‘Afalam  yaddabbarul-Qawla  ‘am  jaaa-‘ahum-maa  lam  ya’-ti  ‘aabaaa-‘ahumul-‘awwaliin. 69.  ‘Am  lam  ya’-rifuu  Rasuu-lahum  fahum  lahuu  munkiruun. 70a.  ‘Am  yaquuluuna  bihii  Jinnah.

Commentary

There is a manifesto of surprise in these verses upon carelessness and insistence of the people to such degree that why they have been involved in as much un-mindfulness. If they had listened to Holy Qur’an carefully, meditated on its rare way; exaltation of objects and incomparable excellences, then they would have understood immediately that there is no other better way of human welfare and betterment which Holy Qur’an describes in this manner. 

Those reasons of miserable negligence can be that either they did neither heard its verses with attention and nor considered its meanings thoughtfully, or they took the advice mentioned in It as an uncommon matter that it did never happen earlier before this, though it is an open thing that the human beings used to go astray from the right path even before it, and for their guidance; the Messengers of Allaah Almighty (peace be upon them) came from time to time. They used to instruct their folks to act upon the commandments of Allaah Almighty; described by them, or the matter is that they did not know their Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) who has been causing to understand them the matters useful for them. Therefore they have been rejecting him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Do they really think that he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) is a mad and (we seek refuge in Allaah) there is insanity in his mind; whereas they have experienced many times that he is a wise and intelligent person? All of them are convinced of his good-nature and noble habits, even that they have shown their inclination to choose him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) as their worldly king and ruler.

Chapter “Mu’-minuun” – (The Believers) - 23

حَتَّىٰٓ إِذَآ أَخَذْنَا مُتْرَفِيهِم بِٱلْعَذَابِ إِذَا هُمْ يَجْـَٔرُونَ 64  لَا تَجْـَٔرُوا۟ ٱلْيَوْمَ إِنَّكُم مِّنَّا لَا تُنصَرُونَ 65  قَدْ كَانَتْ ءَايَٰتِى تُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْكُمْ فَكُنتُمْ عَلَىٰٓ أَعْقَٰبِكُمْتَنكِصُونَ 66  مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِۦ سَٰمِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ 67  

64.  Till when We grasp their luxurious ones with the punishment, behold! They supplicate. 65.  Supplicate not this Day! Assuredly ye will not be helped by Us. 66.  My Revelations were recited unto you, but ye used to turn back on your heels – 67.  In scorn thereof. Nightly did ye rave together.

64.  Hattaaa  ‘izaaa  ‘akhazNaa  mutrafiihim-  bil-‘Azaabi  ‘izaa  hum  yaj-‘aruun. 65.  Laa  taj-‘arul-yawm.  ‘Innakum-minNaa  laa  tunsaruun. 66.  Qad  kaanat  ‘AayaaTii  tut-laa  ‘alaykum  fa-kuntum  ‘alaaa  ‘a’-qaabikum  tankisuun. 67.  Mustak-biriina  bihii  saa-miran-  tahjuruun.

Commentary

Yaj-‘aruuna – (they supplicate, bewail, cry out). Laa  taj-‘aruu – (Don’t supplicate), this is word of command from Yaj-‘aruuna in negative form.

Tankisuuna – (you used to turn back on your heels), origin of this word is naksun, which means “to turn back and run away”.

Saa-mirun – (the person who raves), it is the subject from the word samrun, which means “to rave between a gathering of people at night”. Idolaters of Makkah used to rave at night concerning Holy Qur’an. Sometime they used to say: It was magic spell, sometime – it was poetry, and sometime they used to conjugate that these were fables.

Tahjuruuna – { they used to scorn (the Holy Qur’an), origin of this word is hajara, which means “abuse, insulting language”.

It is commanded: These people have been involved fully in carelessness and play. When Our torment will come suddenly upon them, then they will begin to supplicate, call Us out and lament. But at that time, their supplicating and screaming will be useless. They will be replied: Give up supplicating. We shall neither help you today and nor will you be relaxed. Our Revelations were recited unto you by means of Our Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), but you used to turn back on your heels. You used to consider yourselves greatest, talk at night against Holy Qur’an irrationally and scorn in specified words.

Chapter “Mu’-minuun” – (The Believers) - 23

(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

وَلَا نُكَلِّفُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَهَا وَلَدَيْنَا كِتَٰبٌ يَنطِقُ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَهُمْ لَا يُظْلَمُونَ 62  بَلْ قُلُوبُهُمْ فِى غَمْرَةٍ مِّنْ هَٰذَا وَلَهُمْ أَعْمَٰلٌ مِّندُونِ ذَٰلِكَ هُمْ لَهَا عَٰمِلُونَ 63  

62.  And We task not any soul beyond its scope, and with Us is a Record which speaketh the truth, and they will not be wronged. 63.  Nay, but their hearts are in ignorance of this (Qur’aan), and they have other works, besides, which they are doing.

62.  Wa  laa  Nukallifu  nafsan  ‘illaa  wus-‘ahaa  wa  ladayNaa  Kitaabuny-yantiqu  bil-haqqi  wa  hum  laa  yuzlamuun. 63.  Bal  quluubuhum  fii  gam-ratim-min  haazaa  wa  lahum  ‘a’-maalum-min-  duuni  zaalika  hum  lahaa  ‘aamiluun.

Commentary

It became manifest clearly in the previous verses that wealth and property, descendants and luxurious things of the world are not such things due to which the mankind is overjoyed and begin to consider that “I have been provided all things. It is great grace of Allaah Almighty that He gave me entire good things. And now whatever I demand by means of them, He provides me immediately”.

These all are vain imaginations. The person, who considers so, is immature. This entire is a means of his examination. Actual praiseworthy thing is - having belief in Allaah Almighty, ascribing not any partner unto Him, having fear of Allaah Almighty in the heart even after doing good work that “I don’t know what will happen after presence before Him”. These are the qualities which should be considered in fact good.

It is commanded: Every individual can produce these habits into oneself easily. We have not tasked any soul as such which may be beyond its scope. Deeds of every mankind are recorded with Us in a Roll.

On the Day of Resurrection, that Roll will keep the deeds of every person opened before him/her correctly. None will be wronged. Reward of good works and punishment of evil deeds will be given properly. But alas! The people, who have been entangled in the worldly works, are careless from these matters. This ignorance is their greatest sin. Due to it, many other sins are committed by them, which become themselves a permanent crime. The sinners will have to suffer from retribution of such all sins.
