Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

BisMillaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

قَالَ إِنِّىٓ أُشْهِدُ ٱللَّهَ وَٱشْهَدُوٓا۟ أَنِّى بَرِىٓءٌ مِّمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ (54 b) 

 مِن دُونِهِۦ فَكِيدُونِى جَمِيعًاثُمَّ لَا تُنظِرُونِ (55

إِنِّى تَوَكَّلْتُ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ رَبِّى وَرَبِّكُم مَّا مِن دَآبَّةٍ إِلَّا هُوَ ءَاخِذٌۢ بِنَاصِيَتِهَآ إِنَّ رَبِّى عَلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ (56 

   

54b.  He said: I call Allah to witness, and do ye (too) bear witness, that I am clear of (all) that ye ascribe as partners (to Allah)- 55.  Beside Him; so (try to) circumvent me, all of you, then give me no respite- 56.  Lo! I have put my trust in Allah, my Lord and your Lord. Not an animal but He doth grasp it by the forelock! Lo! My Lord is on a Straight Path.

54b.  Qaala  ‘inniii  ‘ush-hidUllaaha  wash-haduuu  ‘annii  bariii-‘um-mim-maa  tush-rikuun. 55.  Min  duu-nihii  fakii-duunii  jamii-‘an-  summa  laa  tunzi-ruun. 56.  ‘Innii  tawak-kaltu  ‘alAllaahi  Rabbii  wa  Rabbi-kum.  Maa  min-  daaab-batin  ‘illaa  Huwa  ‘aa-khizum-bi-naasi-ya-tihaa.  ‘Inna  Rabbii  ‘alaa  Siraa-tim-Musta-qiim.

Commentary

Kii-duu – (Circumvent!), it is word of command from kayd. Kayd means “trick, to kill, to molest, to attack”.

Prophet Huud (peace be upon him) judged through hearing the conversation of his nation that they would never believe but oppose. Therefore, He (peace be upon him) considered necessary to tell about the support of Allah Almighty and said to His nation: you can never harm me. I say to you openly by calling Allah Almighty as a witness. Hear by opening your ears that I put off your idols which are totally helpless and about which you consider that those are your worshipped, you have abandoned Allah Almighty; Who is real Worshipped. Now you all should use continuously your tricks collectively. I am not afraid of you. I have faith and trust in Allah Almighty. He is my Lord, not only of mine but He is Lord of yours also, whether you understand it or otherwise. It does not depend on me and you, living creatures of all kinds are in His Possession. He has full power over all things. He has fixed a Straight Path for His servants, whosoever will seek, will find It. His Mercy will surround him from all sides. Then no-one will be able to harm him.

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

قَالُوا۟ يَٰهُودُ مَاجِئْتَنَا بِبَيِّنَةٍ وَمَا نَحْنُ بِتَارِكِىٓ ءَالِهَتِنَا عَن قَوْلِكَ وَمَا نَحْنُ لَكَ بِمُؤْمِنِينَ (53)

إِن نَّقُولُ إِلَّا ٱعْتَرَىٰكَ بَعْضُ ءَالِهَتِنَا بِسُوٓءٍ  (54a)

   

53.  They said: O Huud! Thou hast brought us no clear proof and we are not going to forsake our gods on thy (mere) saying, and we are not believers in thee. 54a.  We say naught save that one of our gods hath smitten you with evil way.

53.  Qaaluu  yaa-Huudu  maa  ji’-tanaa  bi-Bayyi-naatinw-wa  maa  nahnu  bitaa-rikiii  ‘aali-hatinaa  ‘an-  qaw-lika  wa  maa  nahnu  laka  bi-Mu’-miniin. 54a.  ‘In-naquulu  ‘illa’-taraaka  ba’-zu  ‘aali-hatinaa  bi-suuu’.

Commentary

‘I’-taraa – (it happened, came before), it is past tense from the word ‘i’-taraa-‘un, origin of which is ‘a-ra-wa. ‘a-ra-wa means “to happen, to come before, to reach”. Meanings of the word ‘i’-taraa-‘un are the same, however, due to letter “bi”, it has become an active verb. ‘I’-taraa-‘um-bi-suuu-‘in would be meant as “to smite, to entrap in any evil”.

The nation of Prophet Huud (peace be upon him) replied after hearing His sayings: You have no clear proof of your truth. We are not ready to believe without any proof and credential that you are true, and nor we shall abandon our gods on your saying. We have no other words to say save it that being utterly sick of hearing from you, our gods have been displeased from you, and any of them has smitten you with evil way, due to which, disturbance has occurred in your senses and your brain does not work correctly.

Those people talk like this; who lose their wits. They become crazy by thinking that: whatsoever we say or do, only that is correct. Contrary to it, if any individual says something new, then he has been insane, whereas, the insanity exists in their heads. Allah Almighty has commanded about such people everywhere that their hearts have been hardened due to their evil deeds and selfishness, so the Truth does not influence on them.

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

وَيَٰقَوْمِٱسْتَغْفِرُوا۟ رَبَّكُمْ ثُمَّ تُوبُوٓا۟ إِلَيْهِ يُرْسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيْكُم مِّدْرَارًا وَيَزِدْكُمْ قُوَّةً إِلَىٰ قُوَّتِكُمْ وَلَا تَتَوَلَّوْا۟ مُجْرِمِينَ (52)  

   

52.  And, O my people! Ask forgiveness of your Lord, then turn unto Him repentant, He will cause the sky to rain abundance on you and will add unto you strength to your strength and turn not away, guilty!

52.  Wa  yaa-qaw-mis-tag-firuu  Rabba-kum  summa  tuu-buuu  ‘ilay-hi  yur-silis-samaaa-‘a  ‘alay-kum-mid-raaranw-wa  ya-zid-kum  quw-watan  ‘ilaa  quw-wati-kum  wa  laa  tata-wallaw  mujri-miin.

Commentary

Mid-raaran – (rain in abundance), it is a tense of exaggerating, which has come out from the word dar-run. Dar-run means “to flow, to rain”. A word mudiraat is also from the same origin, which means “liquids, fluids, stimulants”. Mid-raaran means “That Who rains abundance”.

Territory of the tribe of Aad was dry and withered but the land was very fertile. If it rained abundant, then every crop was produced more than enough. But if it did not rain, then there was no any proper source of water for irrigation. Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) causes to remember to His folk: There is a way of escaping from this calamity of famine, which makes a circuit continuously over your heads. I tell you the same if you are desirous to be saved.

In this verse, that method of dwelling comfortably in this world has been explained by Hud (peace be upon him). He (peace be upon him) said: You should ask forgiveness of God Almighty every time regarding your errors and omissions, incline unto Him in every difficulty. He will cause to rain abundance for you when it would be necessary and by which your gardens and crops will remain flourishing, and those will produce plentiful for you, from which your apparent material strength will increase, as well as having belief in Allah Almighty and drawing your attention unto Him in all matters, your spiritual strength will also be enhanced, and collectively your strength will be manifold. If you will turn away from Allah Almighty and pay your attention toward other things, then you will be weak from both sides.

 وَإِلَىٰ عَادٍ أَخَاهُمْ هُودًا قَالَ يَٰقَوْمِ ٱعْبُدُوا۟ ٱللَّهَ مَا لَكُممِّنْ إِلَٰهٍ غَيْرُهُۥٓ إِنْ أَنتُمْ إِلَّا مُفْتَرُونَ (50)  يَٰقَوْمِ لَآ أَسْـَٔلُكُمْ عَلَيْهِ أَجْرًا إِنْ أَجْرِىَ إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلَّذِى فَطَرَنِىٓ أَفَلَا تَعْقِلُونَ (51)

   

50.  And unto (the tribe of) ‘Aad (We sent) their brother, Huud. He said: O my people! Serve Allah! Ye have no other God save Him. Lo! Ye do but fabricate. 51.  O my people! I ask of you no reward for it. Lo! my reward is the concern only of Him Who created me. Have ye then no sense?

(Section 5) 50.  Wa  ‘ilaa  ‘Aadin  ‘akhaa-hum  Huudaa.  Qaala  yaa-qaw-mi’-budUllaaha  maa  lakum-min  ‘ilaa-hin  gayruh.  ‘In  ‘an-tum  ‘illaa  muf-taruun. 51.  Yaa-qawmi  laaa  ‘as-‘alu-kum  ‘alayhi  ‘ajraa.  ‘In  ‘ajri-ya  ‘illaa  ‘alAllazii  fatara-nii.  ‘Afalaa  ta’-qiluun.

Commentary

Holy Qur’an desires to teach the human beings that in the world; no-one adopted the Straight Path without guidance of the Messengers of Allah Almighty (peace be upon him). Circumstances of ancient people are being caused to hear for manifesting that “what was the sequel of those who denied the guidance of the Messengers (peace be upon them)?”

After the storm of Noah (peace be upon him), the world settled again in process of time and the people were populated at various places in the forms of villages. In Ahqaaf, between Hazarmaut and Najraan, a folk name ‘Aad rose. They were from the descendants of Aad. Aad is grandson of Prophet Noah (peace be upon him). These people were physically very strong, tall and had heavy bodies. They forgot teachings of Noah (peace be upon him), went astray and began to worship idols.

Prophet Hud (peace be upon him) belonged to the same nation, so in this regard; He (peace be upon him) was their brother. Allah Almighty appointed him as His Messenger (peace be upon him) for causing to know them. He (peace be upon him) said to the folk: Behold! These idols have been fabricated by your own hands. You are thinking false that they can give you something or snatch anything from you. You should leave worshipping these false deities and worship only One God, Allah Almighty. This is the Right Path for the mankind. Other all paths are wrong. Attend to me! There is no hidden design of mine in it, which I have been causing to understand you. I do not ask of you any reward. He, Who created me, will provide me every thing. Think about it and obey my sayings. It will be Good for you.

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

تِلْكَ مِنْ أَنۢبَآءِ ٱلْغَيْبِ نُوحِيهَآ إِلَيْكَ مَاكُنتَ تَعْلَمُهَآ أَنتَ وَلَا قَوْمُكَ مِن قَبْلِ هَٰذَا فَٱصْبِرْ إِنَّ ٱلْعَٰقِبَةَ لِلْمُتَّقِينَ (49)

  

49.  This is of the tidings of the Unseen which We inspire in thee (Muhammad). Thou thyself knowest it not, nor did thy folk (know it) before this. Then have patience, lo! The sequel is for those who ward off (evil).

49.  Tilka  min  ‘ambaaa-‘il-gay-bi  nuuhii-haaa  ‘ilayk.  Maa  kunta  ta’-lamu-haaa  ‘anta  wa  laa  qaw-muka  min-  qabli  haa-zaa.  Fasbir.  ‘Innal-‘Aaqi-bata  lil-Mutta-qiin.

Commentary

After causing to hear the story of Noah (peace be upon him), Allah Almighty addressed to His last Messenger Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) in this verse that these are the happenings of the hundreds of years ago, which We (Allah Almighty) cause to hear you {Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)}. The human beings have forgotten them, so these incidents have been included in the “Unseen”.

Now there is no-one who knows them save Allah Almighty, and nobody can know as far as He does not disclose them. Only Allah Almighty is Who informed to His Prophets (peace be upon them) earlier by inspiring, so that they should cause to know their folks and the people should take it a warning for themselves.

In this verse, Allah Almighty says: We have inspired these old stories in you O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and these are proof of your being a Messenger, because such a Mankind who is nourished in between the ignorant and gentile people, who neither acquired knowledge from any other human being and nor dwelled among those who have knowledge of previous Scriptures, how can He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) cause to hear about those occurrences in such full detail? If these people reflect in this matter carefully, then they will not remain in doubt that certainly; Allah Almighty has taught Him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) these all things and therefore, He {Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)} is Messenger of God Almighty.

It is known from this verse also that aim of causing to hear these old stories is not rejoicing or deception, but the object is that the people should be saved from those errors, in which ancient people were entangled and notwithstanding duly warned they did not understand.

Surah Huud (Hud) - 11

قِيلَ يَٰنُوحُ ٱهْبِطْ بِسَلَٰمٍ مِّنَّاوَبَرَكَٰتٍ عَلَيْكَ وَعَلَىٰٓ أُمَمٍ مِّمَّن مَّعَكَ وَأُمَمٌ سَنُمَتِّعُهُمْ ثُمَّ يَمَسُّهُم مِّنَّا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (48

  

48.  It was said (unto him): O Noah! Go thou down (from the mountain) with peace from Us and blessings upon thee and some nations (that will spring) from those with thee. And (there will be other) nations unto whom We shall give enjoyment a long while and then a painful doom from Us will overtake them.

48.  Qiila  yaa-Nuu-huh-bit  bi-Salaa-mim-minnaa  wa  Bara-kaatin  ‘alayka  wa  ‘alaaa  ‘umamim-mim-mam-ma-‘ak.  Wa  ‘umamun  sanu-matti-‘uhum  summa  yamas-suhum-minnaa  ‘azaabun  ‘aliim.

Commentary

Salaa-mun – (peace and safety, ease and comfort), it is a promise of prosperity and betterment from Allah Almighty. Only He is; Who provides peace and prosperity and Who is a Protector from all difficulties.

‘Umamun – (nations, folks), this word is plural of ‘ummatun which has passed in Suratul-Baqarah and ‘An-’aam. It means “a group, a band, a company, a class, whether that is of human beings or those which have life. Here it aims “folks and tribes of the mankind”.

Allah Almighty commanded to Noah (peace be upon him): Quarrelsome people have been finished. Water of storm got down and shortly it would be dried. Now you should go down from the mountain along with your companions and be settled on the land. Now the earth will be populated with your descendants. After it, such kind of disaster will not be sent by Us on the earth before the General Resurrection. You and your companions will dwell with comfort and prosperity. Our blessings will be sent down on you, your companions and many from your and their children. And We shall provide them enjoyment for a long time. However some people from them will choose insurrection. At first they will be given the things of worldly luxurious enjoyment. But at the end, a furious and painful doom will overtake them due to their evil deeds and they will be ruined from the world.

From this explanation, that Straight Path, which Allah Almighty has fixed for human life in the world, is known, that is to say, obedience of the commandments of Allah Almighty and His Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), and abstinence from rebellion and dissension.

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّىٓ أَعُوذُ بِكَ أَنْ أَسْـَٔلَكَ مَا لَيْسَ لِى بِهِۦ عِلْمٌ وَإِلَّا تَغْفِرْ لِى وَتَرْحَمْنِىٓ أَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْخَٰسِرِينَ (47)

  

47.  He said: my Lord! Lo! In Thee do I seek refuge (from the sin) that I should ask of Thee that whereof I have no knowledge. And unless Thou forgive me and have mercy on me I shall be among the lost.

47.  Qaala  Rabbi  ‘inniii  ‘a-‘uu-zu-bika  ‘an  ‘as-‘alaka  maa  lay-sa  lii  bihii  ‘ilm.  Wa  ‘illaa  Tag-fir-lii  wa  Tarhamniii  ‘akum-minal-khaa-siriin.

Commentary

‘illaa – (unless), actually these are two words – ‘in and laa. ‘in means “if” and laa means “not”. In writing, both words have been jointed and the “n” is a silent letter.

Allah Almighty teaches Himself manners and principles to His chosen servants, protects and watches them every time specifically and properly, so that they may not be aloof even a little from the Right Path in any religious and moral affair, and they should be a pattern for others. Sometimes, He makes mention of these teachings in Holy Qur’an, so that for always, the wise people learn manners and principles from it according to their extent and they understand it also carefully that the Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) convey the people only those commandments which Allah Almighty teaches them. Therefore, their (peace be upon them) sayings are worthy of practice; just like the commandments of God Almighty.

In the previous verse, Allah Almighty caused to understand them that every matter is not capable that about it; either someone should ask of Him or pray for its provision. Way of praying and asking for any thing from Allah Almighty is the same as He has taught Himself.

In this verse, for whatsoever Noah (peace be upon him) applied, that is entirely in accordance with this instruction. He (peace be upon him) requested: O my Lord! Save me from it (the sin) that I should ask of You that which is against Your will or pray for such thing which You have not taught me. If You will not forgive me and have not mercy on me then I shall suffer a loss and be among the losers.
