It is the doom for
which you were hastening
Surah YUUNUS - 10 (JONAH)
BisMIllaahir-Rahmaanir-Rahiim
In
the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
50. Say: Have ye
thought: When His doom cometh unto you as a raid by night, or in the (busy) day;
what is there of it that the guilty ones desire to hasten?
51. Is it (only)
then, when it hath befallen you, that ye will believe? What! (Believe) now,
when (until now) ye have been hastening it on (through disbelief)?

Commentary
‘A-ra-‘aytum – (have ye thought), with regard to the appearance; it is an
interrogative sentence. It has come also in the forms of ‘a-ra-‘ayta, ‘a-ra-‘aytukum
and ‘a-ra-‘aytaka. In the
Proverb, its meanings are taken as “Hast thou observed”.
It is commanded:
You have been hastening that the doom should come immediately. Inform Me – if indeed
the doom came unto you as a raid by night or in the day; certainly that would
not be any fun or amusement; in which there would be juggling jokes or
merriment, and nor that would be any bravado; from which you may save
yourselves by running away. That (doom) will be such terrible occurrence that
your all sense and understanding will become useless, and you will be unable to
do something being unconscious, and nor there will be any time of thinking
about rescue that after reaching the doom, you will save yourselves by
believing. It will be said to you: You are late. You have thought about the
Belief when the time was over. What were you doing before this incident? You
were commanded: Hear the verses of Holy Qur’aan (the Word of Allah
Almighty), meditate into them and get deliverance by acting upon the
instructions mentioned in the Scripture. But you did not care at that time. You
said: Bring the doom, we do not believe. Now it is the same doom for which you
were hastening.
