warning) when We told thee: Lo! Thy Lord encompasseth mankind. And We
appointed the vision which We showed thee as an ordeal for mankind, and
(likewise) the Accursed Tree in the Qur’an.
And We warn them, but it increaseth them in naught save gross impiety.

Commentary
Ru’-yaa – (vision, scene), origin of
this word is ra’-yun, which means “to see”. Ru’-yaa is the thing
which is seen. It aims “the sight, view, show, panorama etc. which the Messenger
of Allah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) saw in the
Night of Ascension.”
‘Ash-Shajaratal-Mal-‘uunata – (the
Accursed Tree), the word mal-‘uunatan has been derived from la-‘ana,
which means “cursing, imprecating, distance from the mercy of Allah Almighty”. Mal-‘uun
is the thing which is detestable, hateful in all respect, every such thing,
about which, Allah Almighty disclosed His displeasure. It refers to the Tree of
Zaqum, which has been mentioned in Suratus-Saaffaat and Surah
Dukhaan. This thorny tree has been grown in the Hell. Its form, shape and
taste are very detestable and frightful.
The Infidels of Makkah did not believe in
the Ascension of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him),
denied the Hell and its frightful things. Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon him) said to them: I am Messenger of Allah Almighty and I have
been shown such things during the Ascension; which none of you have ever seen.
Moreover, I have been bestowed with Holy Qur’an, equal of which there is
no other Scripture of the world. Disbelievers did not accept the Ascension and
said: Your mind is unsound (God forbid) because of which you say such things. They
joked of Holy Qur’an in these words “It describes that the Hell is a
store of the Fire, even then there is a Tree in it also. It is strange, how any
tree can be in the fire”? Likewise, the Ascension and the Tree of the Hell,
both became means of increasing their gross impiety, which was a regretful
matter.
