17.
And what is that in thy right hand, O Moses!
18.
He said: This is my staff whereon I lean, and wherewith I beat down
branches for my sheep, and wherein I find other uses.
19.
He said: Cast it down, O Moses!
20.
So he cast it down, and lo! It was a serpent, gliding.
21.
He said: Grasp it and fear not. We shall return it to its former

Commentary
‘Ata-wakka-‘u – (I lean), this word has been
derived from wak-‘un, which means “to stay, to bear, to stop”. Ta-wakka-‘u
means “I take support”.
‘Ahush-shu – {I beat down (leafs of branches from the
trees)}, origin of this word is hash-shun, which means “to beat down dry
leafs from trees”.
Ma-‘aaribun – (usages, benefits), this word is plural
of maaribatun, origin of which is ‘arbun and it means “necessity”.
‘Irbatun means “desire”.
Siiratun – (state), it has come out from the word sayrun,
which means “to walk”. Siiratun means “condition of moving”.
Then Allaah Almighty asked: What is that in your right
hand? Moses (peace be upon him) answered: It is my staff, It is very useful for
me in various works. When I am tired, I take some rest with its support. I beat
down dry leafs from the trees for the food of my sheep and I find many other
uses by it.
Allaah Almighty commanded: Cast it (the staff) down on the ground.
Moses (peace be upon him) threw it on the earth and then immediately that staff
became a serpent and began to glide here and there. Confusion was born in the
heart of Moses (peace be upon him). Then a call was made: Don’t be afraid! Grasp
it in your hand. We shall return it in its original form and it will be a staff
as it was earlier.
