62. Lo! Those who believe (in that which is revealed
unto you, Muhammad), and those who are Jews, and Christians, and Sabaeans –
whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and does right – surely
their reward is with their Lord, and there shall no fear come upon them
neither shall they grieve. |
‘Aa-manuu – (Believes), in this verse “to believe” means “to join” the Muslim Community.
Haaduu – (the Jews), the people who have entered the community of the Jews, whether they are the Children of Israel or otherwise.
Nasaaraa – (the Christians), Nasaaraa is plural of Nasraani. There was a Township in Palestine named ‘Naasirah’. Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) was born in this Township. Due to relationship with this town; Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him) is called Jesus Naasri (peace be upon him). So who follows him, is included in Nasaaraa (the followers of Jesus who was born in Naasirah).
‘As-Saabi-‘iina – (Sabaeans), people who inclined towards some other religion leaving their own, are called Saabi-‘iin. It was a sect in the Arab. They believed in Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him), used to worship the Angels (peace be upon them), used to recite the Psalms of Prophet David (peace be upon him) and during the worship, they used to turn towards “the Square Building at Makkah” (The Inviolable Place of Worship). The Arabians used to say them Saabii ‘the Disbelievers’.
God Almighty has removed misunderstanding of the greatness of the Name, the Family background and the Race, and announced that near Allaah Almighty, either Name or surname or the title are nothing, neither honor of good birth from a particular nation or race and distinction is trustworthy. Two things are necessary for salvation from the wrath of God Almighty, whether the people belong to any race or nation, or they have any surname or title.
- They believe in Allaah and the Last Day (the Day of Resurrection) wholeheartedly.
- They do right (good).
If the people will believe in Allaah Almighty, certainly they will admit His Orders and Commandments also. We have come to know these Orders and Commandments by means of the Last Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). So belief in this Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has been included in it too. If they will believe in the Day of Resurrection then they would have to believe in the punishment and reward.
In short, having belief in God
Almighty and obeying His commandments are compulsory for deliverance from the
Hell, and it is impossible to have belief in God Almighty without acceptance of
the Prophet-hood of the Last Messenger; Muhammad (grace, peace and blessings of
Allaah be on him).
