Customs of our forefathers

Chapter “Saaaffaat” - (Those who set the Ranks) – 37

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

 (I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

بَلْ عَجِبْتَ وَيَسْخَرُونَ 12  وَإِذَا ذُكِّرُوا۟ لَا يَذْكُرُونَ 13  وَإِذَا رَأَوْا۟ ءَايَةً يَسْتَسْخِرُونَ 14  وَقَالُوٓا۟ إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا سِحْرٌ مُّبِينٌ 15  

                                       

12.  Nay, but thou dost marvel when they mock. 13.  And heed not when they are reminded. 14.  And seek to scoff when they behold a portent. 15.  And they say: Lo! this is evident magic-

12.  Bal  ‘ajibta  wa  yas-kharuun. 13.  Wa  ‘izaa  zukkiruu  laa  yaz-kuruun. 14.  Wa  ‘izaa  ra-‘aw  ‘Aayatany-yastas-khiruun. 15.  Wa  qaaluuu  ‘in  haazaaa  ‘illaa  sihrum-mubiin.

Commentary

At the time of revealing the revelation to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him), predictors and astrologers, who used to tell the people false foretelling about future and who were well aware of stars, were perplexed after observing strange matters in the space. New things were appearing in the heaven. They saw a tailed star and observed that many stars were broken. The astrologers, who used to sit on dunes during night hours, stare at stars and study their movements, were frightened. The predictors, who used to answer concerning questions regarding future, began to say to the people: Our Jinn tell us nothing now, but they say: Bombs are rained upon us if we fly towards the sky and we can do nothing except running away.

It was caused to understand in the previous Chapters that burning balls are thrown upon the devils by the Angels to push them back for saving the Divine Revelations. When the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) began to recite Holy Qur’an before the people, they did not care in spite of looking the portents. They did not understand that all such precautionary measures have been arranged for preparation of the safety of revealing Qur’an. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) was surprised on their stupidity but they did not refrain from joking. They were advised but they did not care. They paid no attention after looking miracles and began to say: These are juggling of magic (God forbid). We do neither fear from them and nor can give up customs of our forefathers.
