Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.

وَلَقَدْ رَٰوَدتُّهُۥ عَن نَّفْسِهِۦ فَٱسْتَعْصَمَ وَلَئِن لَّمْ يَفْعَلْ مَآ ءَامُرُهُۥ لَيُسْجَنَنَّ وَلَيَكُونًا مِّنَ ٱلصَّٰغِرِينَ (32  b)

قَالَ رَبِّ ٱلسِّجْنُ أَحَبُّ إِلَىَّ مِمَّا يَدْعُونَنِىٓ إِلَيْهِ وَإِلَّا تَصْرِفْ عَنِّى كَيْدَهُنَّ أَصْبُ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَكُن مِّنَ ٱلْجَٰهِلِينَ (33

32b.  I asked of him an evil act, but he proved continent. But if he do not my behest he verily shall be imprisoned, and verily shall be of those brought low. 33.  He said: O my Lord! Prison is more dear than that unto which they urge me, and if Thou fend not off their wiles from me I shall incline unto them and become of the ignorant.

32b.  Wa  laqad  raawattu-huu  ‘an-nafsihii  fasta’-sam.  Wa  la-‘illam  yaf-‘al  maaa  ‘aamuru-huu  la-yus-jananna  wa  la-yakuu-nam-minas-saagi-riin. 33.  Qaala  Rabbis-sijnu  ‘ahabbu  ‘i-layya  mimmaa  yad-‘uuna-niii  ‘ilayh.  Wa  ‘illaa  tasrif  ‘annii  kay-da-hunna  ‘asbu  ‘ilay-hinna  wa  ‘akum-minal-jaa-hiliin.

Commentary

When the guest women of the wife of the ruler of (Aziz) Egypt had been senseless so much after looking Joseph (peace be upon him) that they cut their hands with knives (which were given in their hands to cut fruit for eating) and they could not recognize, then she understood that they have considered me helpless in the matter of Joseph (peace be upon him), then she made them her confident.

After unfolding her helplessness, she boiled up and said: He (peace be upon him) should not imagine that I shall tolerate His arrogance and boldness. If He obeyed my command, well, otherwise verily I will put Him in the prison.

It is mentioned that the guest women also began to cause to understand Joseph (peace be upon him) that He should not disobey the command of the wife of His lord, otherwise she will cause to punish Him severely. Joseph (peace be upon him) was grieved from irrelevant talks of all of them and begged from Allah Almighty silently: My Lord! If You did not save me from sly and seducing of these women, I fear that I shall incline unto them. I accept prison, but the work of ignorance is not acceptable to Me.

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

وَءَاتَتْ كُلَّ وَٰحِدَةٍمِّنْهُنَّ سِكِّينًا وَقَالَتِ ٱخْرُجْ عَلَيْهِنَّ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْنَهُۥٓ أَكْبَرْنَهُۥ وَقَطَّعْنَ أَيْدِيَهُنَّ وَقُلْنَ حَٰشَ لِلَّهِ مَا هَٰذَا بَشَرًا إِنْ هَٰذَآ إِلَّا مَلَكٌ كَرِيمٌ (31b)

 قَالَتْ فَذَٰلِكُنَّ ٱلَّذِى لُمْتُنَّنِى فِيهِ  (32a)

31b.  and gave to every one of them a knife and said (to Joseph): Come out unto them! And when they saw him they were impressed of his great beauty and cut their hands, exclaiming: Allah! Blameless! This is not a human being. This is no other than some gracious angel. 32a.  She said: This is he on whose account ye blamed me.

31b.  wa  ‘aatat  kulla  waa-hida-tim-min-hunna  sikkii-nanw-wa  qaala- tikhruj  ‘alay-hinn.  Fa-lammaa  ra-‘ayna-huuu  ‘akbar-nahuu  wa  qatta’-na  ‘aydiya-hunna  wa  qulna  haasha  Lillaahi  maa  haazaa  basharaa.  ‘In  haa-zaaa  ‘illaa  malakun-  kariim. 32a.  Qaalat  fazaa-likunnal-lazii  lum-tunnanii  fiih.

Commentary

Wife of the ruler of (Aziz) Egypt produced some fruit before the women and gave in the hand of every one of them a knife for cutting the fruit and eating. Then she said to Joseph (peace be upon him): Come out for a while before them! As soon as they saw Him (peace be upon him), they lost their sense and could not feel that the knife had been cutting their hands instead of fruit. And it came out from their mouths unhesitatingly: Wow that’s great! He is, surely some gracious angel, not a human being.

The ruler’s wife said: Beheld you! This is He on whose account you blamed me. When Joseph (peace be upon him) came out, He saw that it was an assembly of the women, so He lowered His gaze and stood before them. The thing, which influenced the women, was His spiritual power. Any beholder does not become mad by looking only beauty of the face; that he/she begin to cut own hand. It was awe of that hidden Light, which had been shining on His (peace be upon him) blessed face. This light is in the luck of such people whose manners are pure and firm. Common people do not have this light. It was the reason that they (the women) said that Joseph (peace be upon him) was an angel, not a mankind, who are, however, considered more pure and chaste than human beings.

Opinion of women about ruler’s wife

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

  وَقَالَ نِسْوَةٌ فِى ٱلْمَدِينَةِ ٱمْرَأَتُ ٱلْعَزِيزِ تُرَٰوِدُ فَتَىٰهَا عَننَّفْسِهِۦ قَدْ شَغَفَهَا حُبًّا إِنَّا لَنَرَىٰهَا فِى ضَلَٰلٍ مُّبِينٍ (30

 فَلَمَّا سَمِعَتْ بِمَكْرِهِنَّ أَرْسَلَتْ إِلَيْهِنَّ وَأَعْتَدَتْ لَهُنَّ مُتَّكَـًٔا (31  a)

30.  And women in the city said: The ruler’s wife is asking of her slave-boy an ill-deed. Indeed he has smitten her to the heart with love. We behold her in plain aberration. 31a.  And when she heard of their sly talk, she sent for them and prepared for them a cushioned couch (to lie on at the feast)-

30.  Wa  qaala  nis-watun-  fil-Madii-natimra-‘atul-‘Aziizi  turaa-widu  fataahaa  ‘an-nafsih.  Qad  shagafa-haa  hubbaa.  ‘Innaa-  lanaraa-haa  fii  zalaalim-mubiin. 31a.  Falammaa  sami-‘at  bimak-rihinna  ‘ar-salat  ‘ilay-hinna  wa  ‘a’-tadat  lahunna  muttaka-‘an(w)-

Commentary

Shagafa – {smote her to the heart (with love)}, it is a past tense from the word shagaf, which means “to enter in the bottom of the heart, and save own, let all thoughts to empty the heart”. Shagafa-haa – (he has smitten her to the heart), hubban – (by the path of love). Shagaf means “to fall in someone’s love. The person who is charmed in love of someone else is called mashguuf.  

Mak-rin – (secret plan), to show something else; separate from that which is in the heart. Those women were desirous to see Joseph (peace be upon him) that how much beautiful would he be? Apparently they reproached that “A woman of so much higher class fell in love of a slave”. Slave is considered always as of the lowest grade.

The women of the city caught the sound of the story in respect of the Wife of Aziz (a ruler of) Egypt. They said one to another “It seems not good that a woman from highest class begin to be pleased on a slave. At last they all expressed their opinion that she has been mad. When wife of the ruler heard, she invited all of them and prepared for them a cushioned couch decorated with large pillows, which support the back of the persons when sitting down, so that Joseph (peace be upon him) may be viewed by them after sitting comfortably.

Commentary

As Joseph (peace be upon him) confronted the passions manly; that is a lesson for all of us. Until a mankind does not possess moral courage, cannot succeed in the world. For the young man and woman, in such environments, where preparations of stirring up the passions exist in all around, it becomes very difficult to control oneself.

General agent of the King of (Aziz) Egypt made room for Joseph (peace be upon him) at his home like a son and permitted Him to live freely like a member of his family, and he did not consider it necessary to keep feminine members of his family behind the curtain. It was the result of living frankly that his wife fell in love of Joseph (peace be upon him) because she was a free-thinker and delicately nurtured woman of a rich dynasty.

Fear of Allah Almighty only may be useful in the loneliness and private hours, and abiding by the laws of the religion heartily only can save a person from committing evil. Even then, in the Divine Law, it has been instructed to the Believers and who fear God Almighty; that any stranger man and woman should be prevented from meeting with one another freely. If it is compulsory for the women to go out, they should go with simplicity; without adornment and make up, her spouse or any one who is admitted into the women’s apartment, should be along with her. Desire of showing her dress, tinkling in walking and mildness in speaking is not proper for the woman before a man whom she cannot appear unveiled. The man and the woman should keep their eyes down. These restrictions are for such people who fear from the wrath of Allah Almighty, otherwise going out of the house by the women in law-breaker bold men is not suitable.

In short, religious hijab (curtain) is very necessary for the women even among the pure believers, but when the people become full careless and fearless from the commandments of God and His Messenger (peace be upon Him), then there is no other way save strict curtain. Story of Joseph (peace be upon Him) teaches us that mutual concordance of any stranger young man and woman, either ends on unlawful relationship, or severe trial for any of the both, but some times it becomes basis of shameful afflictions and misfortunes.

فَلَمَّارَءَا قَمِيصَهُۥ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٍ قَالَ إِنَّهُۥ مِن كَيْدِكُنَّ إِنَّ كَيْدَكُنَّ عَظِيمٌ (28

يُوسُفُ أَعْرِضْ عَنْ هَٰذَا وَٱسْتَغْفِرِى لِذَنۢبِكِ إِنَّكِ كُنتِ مِنَ ٱلْخَاطِـِٔينَ (29

28.  So when he saw his shirt torn from behind, he said: Lo! This is of the guile of you women. Lo! The guile of you is very great. 29.  O Joseph! Turn away from this. And thou, (O woman), ask forgiveness for thy sin. Lo! Thou art of the faulty.

28.  Falammaa  ra-‘aa  qamii-sahuu  qudda  min-  duburin-  qaala  ‘innahuu  min-  kaydi-kunn.  ‘Inna  kayda-kunna  ‘aziim. 29.  Yuu-sufu  ‘a’-riz  ‘an  haa-zaa.  Wastag-firii  lizambiki  ‘Innaki  kunti  minal-khaati-‘iin. (Section 4)

Commentary

Kayda – (the guile), in the common mode of speech, it is called “a trick, stratagem”. The guile is such a trick, which is thought by someone secretly before time for acquiring own object, and make a plan as soon as one gets opportunity, and he gets own desire fulfilled. In Arabic language, it is called “kayda”. Being good or bad of the kayda (the guile) depends on its aim.

General agent of the King of (Aziz) Egypt examined the shirt of Joseph (peace be upon him) and saw that the shirt was torn from behind. Spontaneously he decided that the woman was faulty, whereas Joseph (peace be upon him) was faultless. He addressed to the woman and said: Such kinds of the guiles can be of the women as you. They know great tricks for acquiring their object.

He said to Joseph (peace be upon him): Mention of this occurrence is useless. This woman is sinner. O woman! Repent of your sin and ask forgiveness of Him (peace be upon him) to whom you tried to asperse; because you are entirely blameworthy at guilt in this matter.

  قَالَ هِىَ رَٰوَدَتْنِى عَن نَّفْسِى وَشَهِدَ شَاهِدٌ مِّنْ أَهْلِهَآإِن كَانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن قُبُلٍ فَصَدَقَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَ ٱلْكَٰذِبِينَ (26

 وَإِن كَانَ قَمِيصُهُۥ قُدَّ مِن دُبُرٍ فَكَذَبَتْ وَهُوَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ (27

26.  (Joseph) said: She it was who asked of me an evil act; and a witness of her own folk testified: If his shirt is torn from the front, then she speaketh truth and he is of the liars. 27.  And if his shirt is torn from behind, then she hath lied and he is of the truthful.

26.  Qaala  hiya  raa-wadatnii  ‘an-nafsii  wa  shahida  shaa-hidum-min  ‘ahlihaa.  ‘In-  kaana  qamii-suhuu  qudda  min-  qubu-lin-  fasadaqat  wa huwa  minal-  kaazi-biin. 27.  Wa  ‘in-  kaana  qamii-suhuu  qudda  min-  duburin-  fakazabat  wa  huwa  minas-saadiqiin.

Commentary

Joseph (peace be upon him) made a clear statement: It is she who wants to entrap me in evil by behaving deceitfully and trying to persuade me. I saved myself by running away. And a witness from the folk of that woman testified that Joseph (peace be upon him) was not a sinner. He said: Behold the shirt of Joseph (peace be upon him)! If it is torn from the front then it is clear that face of Joseph (peace be upon him) was toward the woman. She pulled His skirt to wish to side Him. In this form the woman is truthful.

But if the skirt is torn from behind, then it is obvious that Joseph (peace be upon him) was running away from her, and when she pulled it, it was torn. In such condition, Joseph (peace be upon him) is quite true.

Aziz (the Agent of the King of) Egypt had already understood from strong speech of Joseph (peace be upon him), unusual preparation and adornment of the woman, running of Joseph in front and race of the woman behind Him; that she was guilty.

   وَٱسْتَبَقَا ٱلْبَابَ وَقَدَّتْ قَمِيصَهُۥ مِن دُبُرٍ وَأَلْفَيَا سَيِّدَهَا لَدَاٱلْبَابِ قَالَتْ مَا جَزَآءُ مَنْ أَرَادَ بِأَهْلِكَ سُوٓءًا إِلَّآ أَن يُسْجَنَ أَوْ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ (25

25.  And they raced to the door, and she tore his shirt from behind, and they met her husband at the door. She said: What shall be his reward, who wisheth evil to thy folk, save prison or a painful doom?

25.  Wasta-baqal-baaba  wa  qaddat  qamii-sahuu  min-  duburinw-wa  ‘alfa-yaa  sayyi-dahaa  ladal-baab.  Qaalat  maa  jazaaa-‘u  man  ‘araada  bi-‘ahli-ka  suuu-‘an  ‘illaaa  ‘any-yus-jana  ‘aw  ‘azaa-bun  ‘aliim.

Commentary

Qaddat – (she tore), it is past tense from the word qaddun. Qaddun means “to tear, to rend”.

‘Alfa-yaa – (they met), it is also past tense from ‘ilfaa-‘un, which has come out from the word la-fa-wun. Lafawun means “to hurt”. ‘Ilfaa-‘un means “to find, to meet”. The word “talaafii” has also been derived from the same which means “compensation, reparation”.

When; for getting rid of the wife of Aziz (beloved agent of the king of) Egypt, Joseph (peace be upon him) stood up and ran towards the door, she raced behind Him but could not catch. However, His shirt came into her hand from behind. She caught it and pulled with her full force, which was torn. When they reached out of the door, she was behind Joseph (peace be upon him). They both saw suddenly that the husband of that woman had been standing near the door. The woman thought: It did not happen good. She spoke at once: This Man wished evil to your wife and wanted to commit sexual intercourse with me forcibly. The only punishment for such person can be that either He should be put in prison or punished rigorously, for instance, whipped.
