Error and loss (L–33)

أُولٰئِكَ الَّذينَ اشتَرَوُا الضَّلالَةَ بِالهُدىٰ فَما رَبِحَت
تِجارَتُهُم وَما كانوا مُهتَدينَ 16 |

16.
‘Ulaaa-‘ikallazii-nashtara-wuz-zalaalata bilhudaa: famaa
rabihat-tijaaratuhum wa maa kaanuu muhtadiin. |

16. Those are they who
have bartered error for guidance; but their trade does not profit them, and
they are not guided. |
‘Ishtaraw – (They purchase), to get a thing exchanged with the other. This word is used for the both ‘buying’ and ‘selling’. Hypocrites had option of choice to accept either Belief or Disbelief. But they chose the way of infidelity and hypocrisy.
Maa rabihat – (Does not prosper), this word has been derived from rabah, which means “profit”.
The consequence of hypocrisy has been stated in this lesson that these people went astray leaving the path of Guidance. That is to say; the excellence of the humanity, which is a source of Guidance from God, due to which, every human being can acquire goodness and comfort of perpetual life, these hypocrites extinguished that Light of the humanity. And which Guidance they had to attain, they rejected it and produced bad habits and evil manners into themselves. They thought that they had tried to strike a good bargain, by saying verbally that God was One but keeping infidelity in their hearts. And they were glad on it that how good was this wonderful bargaining?
God commands that they are losers in this bargaining. They reaped casual and sensual, destroyable advantages, by passing their entire life for this purpose. It would have been good business if they had achieved the comfort of their perpetual lives, by spending their wealth and sacrificing casual lives in the Way of God. But they have destroyed also their real capital.
This straying and lose of
hypocrites is the result of their wicked deeds, which has been discussed in the
previous verses (lessons), which verbally they say: We believe in God and in the Day of Resurrection,
whereas they do not believe, but wish to deceive God and the Believers. The
disease of infidelity and hypocrisy is in their hearts. They create disturbance
in the name of correctness, and consider that sincere people and believers are
stupid. They assure them that they are believers and cooperative, but when they
join their devilish companions and leaders, then they are theirs’.
