Beguiling by the Hypocrites (L–28)

9.              يُخادِعونَ اللَّهَ وَالَّذينَ آمَنوا وَما يَخدَعونَ إِلّا أَنفُسَهُم وَما يَشعُرونَ

9.  Yukhaadi-‘uunAllaaha  wal-laziina   ‘aamanuu.  Wa maa yakhda-‘uuna  ‘illaaa  ‘anfusa-hum  wa  maa  yash-‘uruun.

9. They seek to deceive God and those who believe, but they deceive none but themselves, though they are not aware.

Yukhaadi-‘uuna - (They cheat, beguile). This word has been made from khada-‘a,

which means “To hide evil in the heart and to show oneself a good friend, so that the

other person may be deceived, and kept in delusion”.

‘Anfusa-hum (Their lives, souls), it is plural of nafs, which means “Oneself”

Wa maa yash-‘uruun. (And they do not perceive). This word has been derived from

Sha’uur, according to Arabic language; it means “to understand, to perceive”. Here it

aims “internal perception”. The aim is that they have fallen in self-delusion. But they do

not know about their folly.

In the previous lesson, it was described concerning the Hypocrites that: Whatever they say by their tongues, their hearts do not accept it, and whatever they keep in their hearts, they do not say that by their tongues. They say themselves ‘Muslims’ only either for getting favor and benefits from the Muslims or for saving themselves from their seizure. In addition, some more detail about their act of hypocrisy has been described in this lesson. They have been committing the errors of deception and cheating also; besides the infidelity. By opposing the Truth, their courage has increased so much that; according to their thinking, they have been deceiving God too. During the life of the Last Prophet (ﷺ), they used to join and attend conferences of the Muslims and consultations, reinstate their confidence with Muslims and keep conspiracy also with the infidels secretly, informing them the matters of the Muslims and in the form of friends, they used to stab in the backs of the Believers.

This evil behaviour of the Hypocrites is censurable particularly because they try to beguile the Believers. Keeping someone in delusion and misleading others is their religion. Not only Believers, but they have thought that they would succeed in deceiving God also. How much they are senseless, that a creature thinks to deceive his Creator. Therefore, God says in His Holy Word, Al-Qur’an: They are ignorant, do not perceive and have not decency of the Truth. They suppose that ignorance is intelligence and wisdom is folly.
