Mocking of Hypocrites

 

Imprudence of the Hypocrites (L–31)

وَإِذا قيلَ لَهُم آمِنوا كَما آمَنَ النّاسُ قالوا أَنُؤمِنُ كَما آمَنَ السُّفَهاءُ ۗ أَلا إِنَّهُم هُمُ السُّفَهاءُ وَلٰكِن لا يَعلَمونَ13.

13.  Wa ‘izaa qiila lahum  ‘aa-minuu kamaaa ‘aamanan-naasu  qaa-luuu  ‘a-nu’-minu kamaaa  ’aa-manas-sufahaaa’.  ‘Alaaa ‘innahum  hu-mu-sufahaaa-‘u   wa laakil-laa  ya’-lamuun.

13.  And when it is said to them, “Believe as the people have believed,” they say, “Shall we believe as the fools have believed?” In fact, it is they who are the fools, but they do not know.

‘An-naas - (The people), with the use of (‘An) ‘al this word indicates towards the particular people, who believe, and do not deceive anyone in the matter of faith.

‘As-sufahaaa’ - (The foolish), this word is plural of safiiha, which has been derived

from safaha. It means levity, lightness, because foolishness is due to decrement of

wisdom and sense, so it aims the people, who are known as foolish, stupid, silly or nonsense.

Another habit of the Hypocrites is being discussed in this verse. When they are asked to believe as the true Muslims believe wholeheartedly with purity and sincerity, they reply, “Should we believe as the foolish believe”? As it were; the Believers are foolish according to their opinion. In accordance with the Hypocrites, “the Muslims want to excel the Truth over a great majority of the infidelity, which is entirely impossible”. 

The Hypocrites of Madinah were very proud due to their power and strength. They had faith that the poor, strangers and refugee Muslims would not be able to stay against them. They used to think that Islam was a play for a few days, which would be over naturally. So the people, who are entering into it, are indolent from its end and careless from their benefits.

Answering to their so saying, God commands, “Beware! They indeed are the foolish but they know not”, because the Truth however, will overcome. And the deceiver hypocrites will suffer forever.

It is known from this verse that the Hypocrites do not believe in the Day of Resurrection. So there is dire need of providence to believe in the Day of Resurrection. Some volume of the pleasures of this world would have to be given up for the ease of the next life, which will begin immediately after death, believing in the Day of Resurrection. Hypocrites do not think about the End. They remain careless from that gain and loss, which will be forever in the next life. So they are foolish and blockhead.
