Selfishness of the idolaters of Makkah

Commentary
Disbelievers of Makkah
were not desirous to believe in Messenger-hood of Muhammad (grace, glory,
blessings and peace be upon him). Reason of which was that they were selfish.
This madness had been filled in the mind of every individual that he should be
chieftain and all other people should attend to him, and whatever he says, they
should obey. Besides this, they had a great degree in the Arab. They did not
want to be dethroned themselves; and accept their chieftain to such Person, who
does not wish superiority of His nation. But He (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon him) desires to finish the superiority of other all by
establishing the Superiority of Allah Almighty. If He had chosen chief-ship for
Himself and designed to elevate own folk above the entire people; even then
there was no loss. But He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) does
not give any importance to the honor and dignity of the world, and stops use of
every thing for the cause of Allah Almighty, that by inclining unto Him, every
thing of the world will be underneath the feet naturally.
Any thing of the
world has no importance. Most important thing is pleasure of Allah Almighty.
Perfect purpose of God’s commandments is to arrange for the next life (in the
Hereafter). He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) wishes that the
mankind should not forget Allah Almighty and the Day of Resurrection by being
entangled in the works of the world only.
Selfish Idolaters
could not understand that “Allah Almighty provides them every thing who give up
every thing for His sake”. Therefore, they used to disbelieve in the
Apostle-hood of Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and
seek the plea of disbelief. On the whole, in addition to other matters, they
used to say: As Arabic is His language; He can make Qur’aan in it Himself.
Moreover, He can take help in this matter from those people who know Arabic
language.
They used to say, “We
would have admitted the Qur’aan that it was the Word of Allah if it had
been revealed in any unusual language, which would not have been known to Him
(grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)”. Reply of this pretence has
been given in this verse that “your selfishness has been exciting you for evasions;
otherwise the matter is very simple. We have sent Arabic Messenger (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon him) for the purpose that at first he should
cause to know you. And it is evident that explaining before such person who
understands the particular language; can be easy. Before this time, how much
Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) came in this world, they used to
speak that language which was spoken ordinarily in their country, because
actual object is to cause to understand the people useful matters. And it can
be explained well in the language which the people understand”.
