Commentary

Khutu-waatish-Shaytaani – (the footsteps of the Devil), meanings of fahshaa and munkar (indecency and evil) have passed in Suratul-‘A’-raaf. (Say: MY Lord has forbidden only indecencies, such of them as are apparent and such as are hidden, and sin and wrongful oppression, and that ye associate with Allah that for which no warrant has been revealed, and that ye tell concerning Allah that which ye know not. 7:33). It was commanded earlier in Suratul-Baqarah: “Follow not the footsteps of the Devil”.

Belief of the Hypocrites is illusive only. As soon as they found chance, they accused of indecency to the innocent people, although it was forbidden, and then they circulated this false story as much that some true Muslims also were involved in their deception. Therefore, the attention has been drawn again towards such matters in this verse which were already explained and which were forgotten by some Muslims due to disturbance of the Hypocrites.

It is commanded: The Devil tries always to mislead the mankind from the right and straight path. Like this, the people who have become his disciples, they also wish to misguide the people unto their wrong path. Behold! You have believed in Allaah Almighty. You should never fall into the scheming of Satan and his followers. They desire to invite the people towards indecency and evil, and bring a charge against the righteous people. You should escape from the path they chose and never be deceived by them.
