Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)
14. And when We decreed
death for him, nothing showed his death to them save a creeping creature of
the earth which gnawed away his staff. And when he fell the jinn saw clearly
how, if they had known the unseen, they would not have continued in
humiliating torment.

Commentary
Minsa-‘atun – (staff, stick, club), it is instrumental
pronoun.
Prophet Solomon (peace be upon him) performed many useful works.
The jinn and the mankind helped him in this matter. It was only pomp and fear
of Solomon (peace be upon him) that they all continued themselves working. He (peace
be upon him) used to stand at his fixed place with the support of his staff for
worshipping Allaah Almighty. And they used to remain engaged in their
works, considering that Solomon (peace be upon him) had been watching them. This
work was construction of The Temple of Jerusalem (Baytul-Muqaddas) which
was at its completion stage. Foundation of the Temple was laid by Solomon’s
Father David (peace be upon them).
It has been commanded in this verse: Allaah Almighty
willed to complete this task. On the other side, Solomon’s time of death came
close too, and when he was standing with the support of his staff; departed. But
he remained in standing position as earlier, so that by observing him standing;
the workers (particularly the Jinn) should not stop working. A creature of the earth (weevil) began to eat his
staff. When the staff had been excavated internally, then it broke and Solomon (peace
be upon him), who was standing with its support, fell down. At that time, the
jinn grieved that if they had known that he had been died, they would have
stopped working hard. From this, their slavery and disgrace had been manifested.
It was obvious that they did not have knowledge of unseen. Solomon (peace be
upon him) had died but they abode by his command, because they had been looking
him in standing position.
