(In the name of Allaah, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

12.  And the two seas are not alike; this, fresh, sweet, good to drink, this (other) bitter, salt. And from them both ye eat fresh meat and derive the ornament that ye wear. And thou seest the ship cleaving them with its prow that ye may seek of His Bounty, and that haply ye may give thanks.

Commentary

Saaa-‘igun – (good to drink, palatable for drinking),

There was mention of the knowledge of Allaah Almighty in the previous verse. In this verse, there is an indication towards accomplishments of the Nature. It is commanded: The things of various sorts have been spreading in the world. Qualities of every one of them are separate from one another. On one side, there is a body of water in the Sea which is fresh and sweet, palatable for drinking, and water of the other side is salty and bitter. The water of both sides has been working separately. Fresh fish is acquired from the water of both sides along with pearls, shells and corals, which are used as ornaments. Boats and big ships plow through them, which are used for transportation of the trading goods from one place to the other and the traders reap advantage. You should be grateful to your Lord for all such useful things and engage yourselves in His worship. Is it not darkness that you reap advantages from the blessings of Allaah Almighty but do not try to know Him?
