Awaken from the dream of negligence! (L-2800)

By causing to hear the stories of ancient Prophets (Peace be upon them), Muhammad,  () is being consoled that the men of old didn’t find any fruit by opposing their prophets (Peace be upon them). Every prophet was troubled in various ways by the people who used to consider that the world was everything. They did never think that after death, they would have to give account of all such deeds which they had been doing in the world. Every prophet desired to cause them to know the same but the mankind didn’t wake up from his sleep of negligence.

The condition of the Infidels of Makkah was also the same. They used to call the name of God Almighty but were worshippers of the idols. Holy Prophet () caused them to understand: Behold! God Almighty has bestowed me His Word i.e. Holly Qur’an, appointed and sent me as a Messenger towards you. I explain before you that you should not worship any other than God Almighty; otherwise you will be entangled in a big misfortune on the Day of Judgment. They said: We don’t accept that you are a Messenger. We just consider that whatever we have been doing; is in accord with the Will of Allaah. And if it is not so, then we ask Him to send His Wrath upon us right now.

This answer was so much heartbreaking. How much the Prophet () would have been shocked by this reply? In these verses, it has been explained: Have patience on their arrogance. They have forgotten their reality. We tell you the story of David (Peace be upon him) by which you will come to know that what is the reality of the mankind. He has been sent in this world so that he must accomplish the orders of God Almighty and consider himself His slave and servant. If he looked at himself and began to fulfill his desires, then surely he left the way which was chosen by God Almighty for him. Now on the Day of Reckoning, the Lord of the Lords will take an account of his deeds and ask: Did you accomplish Our Commandments as you were instructed or otherwise?

David (Peace be upon him) had a high position but he made a little mistake. Then it was caused him to understand and he fell prostrate before God Almighty immediately, admitted his error that he forgot his reality and prayed for forgiveness.

Then it was commanded: You are forgiven. Remember it that We have bestowed you a high dignity in the world. You are Our viceroy, so comply with your duties according to your status. Power has been given to you so that you must judge among the people with justice. Control your desires; otherwise you will be thrown away from the prescribed Path of God Almighty. Those people will be tormented very severely, who leave the Path of God.

We should find out from it that accomplishing the C
ommands of God Almighty according to own status is compulsory for every mankind, otherwise they will be suffering from torment. One of Sayings from Allaah’s Messenger (
) is: Every individual is a ruler in his circle and everyone will be asked that how did he rule? This is the summary of whole story.

Advice for David

  

Advice for David (L-2799)

يَٰدَاوُۥدُ إِنَّا جَعَلْنَٰكَ خَلِيفَةً فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَٱحْكُم بَيْنَ ٱلنَّاسِ بِٱلْحَقِّ وَلَا تَتَّبِعِ ٱلْهَوَىٰ فَيُضِلَّكَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ يَضِلُّونَ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ لَهُمْ عَذَابٌ شَدِيدٌۢ بِمَا نَسُوا۟ يَوْمَ ٱلْحِسَابِ 26

26.  Yaa-Daawuudu  ‘inNaa  ja-‘alNaaka  Khaliifatan-  fil-‘arzi  fahkum-  baynan-naasi  bil-haqqi  wa  laa  tattabi-‘il-hawaa  fayuzillaka  ‘an  SabiiLillaah.  ‘Innal-laziina  yazil-luuna  ‘an  SabiiLillaahi  lahum  ‘azaabun  shadiidum-  bimaa  nasuu  Yawmal-Hisaab.

26. “O David, We made you a ruler in the land, so judge between the people with justice, and do not follow desire, lest it diverts you from God’s path. Those who stray from God’s path will have a painful punishment, for having ignored the Day of Account.”

Chosen slaves of God Almighty are caused to understand immediately even on their very little carelessness. And they understand from it such matters which a common person can never think. Thrusting of two stranger complainants boldly into the house of David (Peace be upon him), particularly in his private chamber of worship, was sufficient to remove all such thoughts of his power and abilities. He prayed: My Lord! Really I am helpless. Accept my repentance and forgive my errors.

It was commanded: We forgave you. Remember it that whatsoever is bestowed to you, is because We have appointed you Our viceroy. Accordingly, use the power bestowed by Us, as We desire. Judge the mutual cases of the public with justice. Kingship is not to be superior to others and making the people own servants. One has to remove personal wishes in it. The ruler who becomes slave of own desires, loses everything. He has gone astray from the Path of God Almighty and put His Commands behind his back. It is apparent that the people who turned away from the Commandments of God Almighty in the world, certainly they forgot the Day of Resurrection. They did pay no regard to it that on the Day of Reckoning, account of their entire deeds will be checked. Result of their forgetting will be that they will be suffering from severe torment.

David understood

  

David understood (L-2798)

وَظَنَّ دَاوُۥدُ أَنَّمَا فَتَنَّٰهُ فَٱسْتَغْفَرَ رَبَّهُۥ وَخَرَّ رَاكِعًا وَأَنَابَ 24b  

فَغَفَرْنَا لَهُۥ ذَٰلِكَ وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ 25 

 

24b.  Wa  zanna  Daawuudu  ‘annamaa  fatannaahu  fastagfara  Rabbahuu  wa  kharra-  raaki-‘anw-wa  ‘anaab. (‘As-Sajdah – Bow Down)

25.  FagafarNaa  lahuu  zaalik.  Wa  ‘inna  lahuu  ‘indaNaa  lazulfaa  wa  husna  ma-‘aab.

 

24b.  David realized that We were testing him, so he sought forgiveness from his Lord, and fell down to his knees, and repented.

25. So We forgave him that. And for him is nearness to Us, and a good place of return.

This matter was very surprising for David (Peace be upon him) that the strangers entered in his particular private chamber of worship by climbing the wall fearlessly in the presence of guards and police posts, conversed boldly with him and said to a King of high dignity: Do justice in our case without delaying on the name of inquiries etc. Notwithstanding, he judged their case to their satisfaction and did not delay.

When both parties went away after hearing the judgment of their case, then David (Peace be upon him) began to think: What was this and why it happened? At last it came in his mind: Perhaps I had been proud of my pomp, ability of management, an Army, watchers and guards. Possibly he would have thought: In spite of engagements in the matters of the Empire, I worship God Almighty wholeheartedly in such private place of worship. He has shown me that my arrangements are entirely useless, I am helpless in worshipping wholeheartedly and I am unable to keep such privacy. It all is by the Grace of God Almighty.

As soon as this thought came in his mind, he fell prostrate on the ground with humility, apologized of his error and turned towards God Almighty; paying no regard to his guards and Army. God Almighty accepted his repentance and commanded: For him is nearness to Us, and a good place of return in the Hereafter.

This is the verse of “Prostration”.

Judgment

  

Judgment (L-2797)

فَقَالَ أَكْفِلْنِيهَا وَعَزَّنِى فِى ٱلْخِطَابِ 23b  قَالَ لَقَدْ ظَلَمَكَ بِسُؤَالِ نَعْجَتِكَ إِلَىٰ نِعَاجِهِۦ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِّنَ ٱلْخُلَطَآءِ لَيَبْغِى بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ إِلَّا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَعَمِلُوا۟ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ وَقَلِيلٌ مَّا هُمْ 24a


23b.  Faqaala  ‘akfilniihaa  wa  ‘azzanii  fil-khitaab.

24a.  Qaala  laqad  zalamaka  bisu-‘aali  na’-jatika  ‘ilaa  ni-‘aajih.  Wa  ‘inna  kasiiram-minal-khulataaa-‘i  layabgii  ba’-zuhum  ‘alaa  ba’-zin  ‘illallaziina  ‘aamanuu  wa  ‘amilus-saalihaati  wa  qaliilum-maa  hum.

 

23b.  and he said, ‘Entrust it to me,’ and he pressured me with words.”

24a. He said, “He has done you wrong by asking your ewe in addition to his ewes. Many partners take advantage of one another, except those who believe and do good deeds, but these are so few.”

The plaintiff has been describing: My this brother is owner of ninety nine ewes whereas I have only one ewe. Even then he says: What will you do with this one ewe? It is useless for you. Give it to me because owner of one ewe is considered poor and a worthless fellow. You can’t be counted in rich people by it. If you will give me your ewe, it will increase my value. People will say: He is a rich because he is owner of one hundred ewes. Remember! I can snatch it from you if you do not hand over to me because people of the Township trust in me.

David (Peace be upon him) called the defendant to account. He would have admitted the claim as correct. Then David (Peace be upon him) judged: The defendant is unjust clearly. Usually dwellers of a place wrong one another. Powerful keeps the feeble pressed down and the rich seize the things of the poor. They don’t care concerning justice. However the people who believe in God Almighty and do good works for the sake of their Lord, they escape from wronging others. But such people are only a few in the world. Be satisfied! We shall not let him do injustice with you.

Statement of litigants (L-2796)

خَصْمَانِ بَغَىٰ بَعْضُنَا عَلَىٰ بَعْضٍ فَاحْكُمْ بَيْنَنَا بِالْحَقِّ وَلَا تُشْطِطْ وَاهْدِنَا إِلَىٰ سَوَاءِ الصِّرَاطِ22b 
 
إِنَّ هَٰذَا أَخِي لَهُ تِسْعٌ وَتِسْعُونَ نَعْجَةً وَلِيَ نَعْجَةٌ وَاحِدَةٌ 23a. 

22b.  Khasmaani  bagaa  ba’-zunaa  ‘alaa  ba’-zin-  fahkum  baynanaa  bil-haqqi  wa  laa  tushtit  wahdinaaa  ‘ilaa  sawaaa-‘issiraat.

 

23a.  ‘Inna  haazaaa  ‘akhii.  Lahuu  tis-‘unw-wa  tis-‘uuna  na’-ja-tanw-  wa  liya  na’-jatunw-waahidah.

 

22b.  Two disputants; one of us has wronged the other; so judge between us fairly, and do not be biased, and guide us to the straight way.”

23a. “This brother of mine has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe,

Laa  tushtit – (be not unjust), it is a negative sentence from the word ‘ishtaatun, which has come out from the word shattun. Shattun means “to do injustice”. Any such matter by which; any other is troubled, for example, to prolong the trial, to delay unnecessarily, to evade etc.

They began to say: We have come to you for settlement of our dispute. We are two parties. One party has been using force against the other openly. One of the two talks in such a way that the people take his side, notwithstanding he is violent and they seize the oppressed that he should obey the oppressor. We have come to you that you will not do injustice unnecessarily. Kindly judge between us and show us the right path.

After that the plaintiff spoke: This man is my brother. He has ninety-nine ewes, and I have one ewe only.

David (Peace be upon him) would have been surprised from the plaintiff’s claim, that they crossed the wall and entered his chamber without permission, and instead of fearing from punishment; they were warning strictly and fearlessly that the King should do justice. It is obvious that how much a great and awe-inspiring King would have been surprised that what was happening.

The power belongs to God only

 

The power belongs to God only (L-2795)

وَشَدَدْنَا مُلْكَهُۥ وَءَاتَيْنَٰهُ ٱلْحِكْمَةَ وَفَصْلَ ٱلْخِطَابِ 20  

وَهَلْ أَتَىٰكَ نَبَؤُا۟ ٱلْخَصْمِ إِذْ تَسَوَّرُوا۟ ٱلْمِحْرَابَ 21  

إِذْ دَخَلُوا۟ عَلَىٰ دَاوُۥدَ فَفَزِعَ مِنْهُمْ قَالُوا۟ لَا تَخَفْ 22a 

20.  Wa  shadadNaa  mulkahuu  wa  ‘aatayNaahul-hikmata  wa  faslal-khitaab.

21.  Wa  hal  ‘ataaka  naba-‘ul-khasm.  ‘Iz  tasawwarul-mihraab.

22a.  ‘Iz  dakhaluu  ‘alaa  Daawuuda  fafazi-‘a  minhum  qaaluu  laa  takhaf.

 

20. And We strengthened his kingdom, and gave him wisdom and decisive speech.

21. Has the story of the two disputants reached you? When they scaled the sanctuary?

22a. When they entered upon David, and he was startled by them. They said, “Do not fear.

Faslal-khitaab – (decisive speech, discernment in speech). Fasl means “to separate”. Khitaab means “to talk with someone else”. It aims that David (Peace be upon him) used to cause to understand every matter very clearly by separating words one by one.

Khasm – (the disputants, the litigants), in Arabic language, this word is used for all – singular, plural, masculine and feminine etc. in this same form. Plaintiff and defendant – both too are included in it.

It is commanded: We bestowed to David (Peace be upon him) very strong and powerful Empire. His horror had been established everywhere and everyone used to obey him (Peace be upon him). He had a great Army.

Moreover, We had bestowed him many personal qualities also. He (Peace be upon him) used to understand the reality of everything and reach the bottom of every matter easily. He used to cause every individual to understand everything very clearly by separating words, so that no one should remain in any doubt. He used to judge every law-suit very carefully. He used to take full interest in the matters of Country’s and Empire’s Management and make all arrangements intelligently. Keeping a watch on every side was established properly and he himself used to remain busy in the remembrance and worship of God Almighty very satisfactorily at a safe place of retirement.

Next, such an incident has been described; in which it has been caused David (Peace be upon him) to understand. It is commanded: You should never think about that matter because you have great magnificence and honor; and the entire system has been running under your supervision. Perhaps any little thought would have come in his mind, for removal of which permanently, this incident would have happened.

It is commanded: O Messenger (): Did you hear concerning the story of two disputants? They entered the sanctuary of David (Peace be upon him) by climbing the wall fearlessly. He was alarmed that how they had come in. they said: Do not fear!

An exhortation to patience (L-2794)

ٱصْبِرْ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱذْكُرْ عَبْدَنَا دَاوُۥدَ ذَا ٱلْأَيْدِ إِنَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ 17  

إِنَّا سَخَّرْنَا ٱلْجِبَالَ مَعَهُۥ يُسَبِّحْنَ بِٱلْعَشِىِّ وَٱلْإِشْرَاقِ 18  

وَٱلطَّيْرَ مَحْشُورَةً كُلٌّ لَّهُۥٓ أَوَّابٌ 19  

 

17.  ‘Isbir  ‘alaa  maa  yaquuluuna  wazkur  ‘AbdaNaa  Dawuuda  Zal-‘ayd.  ‘Innahuuu  ‘awwaab.

18.  ‘Innaa  sakh-kharNal-jibaala  ma-‘ahuu  yusabbihna  bil-‘ashiyyi  wal-‘ishraaq.

19.  Wattayra  mah-shuurah.  Kullul-laHuuu  ‘awwaab.

 

17. Be patient in the face of what they say, and mention Our servant David, the resourceful. He was obedient.

18. We committed the mountains to glorify with him, in the evening and at daybreak.

19. And the birds, gathered together. All obedient to him.

 ‘Ayd – (might, strength, resourceful), here the aim from this word is “firm intention” of Prophet David (Peace be upon him); by which he used to worship God Almighty whole heartedly and felt himself never tired, or it aims “Monarchy and government”. Such both powers he had”.

‘Awwaab – (that who turns towards). This word has been derived from ‘awbun, which means “returning, coming back to same place. It aims that David (Peace be upon him) used to pay attention towards God in all conditions). At another place this word has been used for the birds which used to keep their beaks towards David (Peace be upon him).

It has been commanded for the Messenger (): Arrogance and refractoriness of these disbelievers have been increased so much. You must endure their causing troubles with patience. The end of those who bear calamities with patience is always good, particularly when they are constant towards God Almighty. Its example exists in the story of David (Peace be upon him). He used to take work from patience and pay attention to God Almighty only. At last, He helped him and bestowed him Prophet-hood. He granted such affect in his voice that in the morning and evening, when he (Peace be upon him) used to come out in open area and begin to praise God Almighty aloud, then the mountains too begin praising along with him. The birds used to stop flying, gather all of them and begin to imitate in praising by turning their beaks towards David (Peace be upon him). It was affect of enduring troubles with patience in the beginning. God Almighty bestowed rewards to him in the world.
