Commentary

‘I’-tazaltumuuhum – (you have withdrawn from them), it is past tense from the word ‘i’-tazaal, which means “to withdraw and be separate. Origin of this word is ‘azal, which means “to separate”. From the same, a word “ma’-zuul” has been derived which means “deposed, dismissed, and degraded etc.” ‘I’-tazaal means “to be disconnected”. Mu’-tazilah has come out from the same also which means “the sect which has been separated”.

Mirfaq – (a pillow in plight, advantage, gain, profit), this word has been made from rafaqa, which means “respite, facility, ease”. Mirfaq means “the thing or condition which provides relief.

The companions of the Cave were servants of the King who used to compel the people to bow down prostrate before him. They refused to fall prostrate before him and asked Allah Almighty for help. They began to say one to another mutually: While you have been separated from your infidel folk and their idols openly then you should go and abide in that Cave which is in the mountains. Allah Almighty will send down His Mercy upon you and produce such circumstances that you will feel convenience and out of the reach of this cruel King. They all did think so and after counseling mutually; they went into the Cave. There, drowsiness spread upon them and after lying down those all went to sleep.

Other servants of the King tried their best to search the companions but they could not find them. At last they returned in vain.

About the religion of those companions, there are different opinions of the people. Some of them say that they were Christians, but others say that it was happened very earlier than Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him)*. However, Holy Qur’an informs that they were Believers of Allah Almighty. It is useless to speak about their religion. We should learn only from their story that the people who incline unto Allah Almighty wholeheartedly; leaving all others, worship Him only and also ask Him only for help, certainly Allah Almighty helps them.
