My Lord is Best Aware of their number

Chapter Kahf (The Cave) – 18

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.
(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful)

22.  (Some) will say: They were three, their dog the fourth, and (some) say: Five, their dog the sixth, guessing at random; and (some) say: Seven, and their dog the eighth. Say: (O Muhammad): My Lord is Best Aware of their number. None knoweth them save a few. So contend not concerning them except with an outward contending, and ask not any of them to pronounce concerning them.
22.  Sa-yaquuluuna  salaasatur-raabi-‘uhum  kalbuhum.  Wa  yaquuluuna  khamsatun-  saadi-suhum  kalbuhum  rajmam-  bil-gayb.  Wa  yaquuluuna  sab-‘a-tunw-wa  saaminuhum  kalbu-hum.  Qur-Rabbiii  ‘a’-lamu  bi-‘iddatihim-  maa  ya’-lamuhum  ‘illaa  qaliil.  Falaa  tumaari-  fiihim  ‘illaa  miraaa-‘an  zaahiraa.  Wa  laa tastafti  fiihim-minhum  ‘ahadaa. Commentary

Laa  tumaari – (Do not contend), it is a negative sentence from the word mamaaraatun, second form of which is miraa-‘un; came in the same verse after laa  tumaari. Origin of this word is mir-yatun, which means “doubt”. Mamaaraatun and miraa-tun means “disputing doubtfully, to inquire, investigation”.

Whatsoever has been described in Holy Qur’an in respect of the Companions of the Cave, that is sufficient to teach the mankind a useful lesson, and that lesson is “there hearts get more strength when they believe that only Allah Almighty is their Lord; and they worship Him only”. This lesson is of use during difficult circumstances by the Grace of God Almighty. And for learning this lesson, there is no need of knowing their number; or try to inquire that how many persons they were at the time of departure from their homes for proceeding unto the Cave; and whether any other person or animal joined them in the way or otherwise. It is useless to waste the precious time by involving oneself or opposing in such matters that “whether they were three, five or seven and along with them there was a dog too.

The only matter which is required to be understood is that “he became good who joined a good company. Fabricating false stories at own is useless. That has been narrated which was necessary. Now you should neither contend and nor inquire from any other concerning them. Allah Almighty is Best Aware of all such matters. Among the human beings, there are only a few who know concerning them.”
