وَجَآءُو عَلَىٰ قَمِيصِهِۦ بِدَمٍ كَذِبٍ قَالَ بَلْ سَوَّلَتْ لَكُمْ أَنفُسُكُمْ أَمْرًا فَصَبْرٌ جَمِيلٌ وَٱللَّهُ ٱلْمُسْتَعَانُ عَلَىٰ مَا تَصِفُونَ (18)
18. And they brought
his shirt stained with false blood. He said: Nay, but your minds have beguiled
you into something. (My course is) comely patience. And Allah it is Whose

Commentary
Saw-walat – (have
beguiled), it is a past tense from the word tas-wiil, which has been
derived from saw-lun. Saw-lun means “softness and mildness”. Tas-wiil
means “to produce something false for carrying into effect in time and easily”.
Musta-‘aanun – (That, Whose help is to be sought), grammatically, it is “the Passive
Participle or the Adverb” from the word ‘ista-‘aanatun, origin of which
is ‘aw-nun. ‘Aw-nun means “help and support”. ‘Ista-‘aanatun
means “to ask for help”. From the same, a word “nasta-‘iin has come out;
which exists in Chapter one (Suratul Faatihah). Musta-‘aan is - either
“That Person, Whose help is to be sought” or “that place, wherefrom, one has a hope
of help”.
After flinging
Joseph (peace be upon him) into the depth of the pit, His brothers came unto
their Father (peace be upon him) weeping at night fall for beguiling. Shirt of
Joseph (peace be upon him) was undressed by His brothers at the time of placing
Him in the depth of the pit. They stained the shirt with the blood of any
freshly killed beast. Those ignorant did not understand that “if the wolf had
caught Joseph, His (peace be upon him) shirt would have been torn at first”.
What it meant that “body of Joseph (peace be upon him) was injured and
full-blooded, whereas His shirt did not have any sign of wolf’s attack”?
As soon as Jacob
(peace be upon him) beheld, He said: Nay, but your minds have beguiled you into
something (your entire story is self-fabricated) and the blood stained on the
shirt is false, not of Joseph (peace be upon him). However, He (peace be upon
him) said nothing more than it. He (peace be upon him) was sure that Joseph
(peace be upon him) was alive in the world and sometime or other, they would
see each other, but however, before long, He (peace be upon him) had been away.
Then, Jacob (peace be upon him) thought: Patience is better for me in such
condition and I should leave this matter on Allah Almighty.
After that, He
(peace be upon him) said to His sons: At the time of this misfortune, I ask
Allah Almighty for help in my grief.
