Water-drawer of the caravan

Surah Yuusuf (Joseph) - 12

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahi minash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in God from Satan the outcast.)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

(In the name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful.)

19.  And there came a caravan, and they sent their water-drawer, he let down his pail (into the pit). He said: Good luck! Here is a youth. And they hid him as a treasure. And Allah was Aware of what they did.
19.  Wa  jaaa-‘at  say-yaaratun-  fa-‘arsaluu  waari-dahum  fa-‘ad-laa  dalwah.  Qaala  yaa-bush-raa  haazaa  gulaam.  Wa  ‘asar-ruuhu  bizaa-‘ah.  Wallaahu  ‘Aliimum-bimaa-ya’-maluun.

Commentary

‘Ad-laa – (he let down), it is a past tense from the word ‘id-laa-‘un, which has come out from the word dal-wun, used after this word. Dal-wun means a pail. ‘Id-laa-‘un means “to let the pail down in the pit”.

Yaa-bush-raa – (Good luck!), bushraa means “pleasure and good news”. In Arabic, this word is used for exclaiming about any sudden pleasure as Wow!, Bravo!, Excellent!, Oh!, Well done! etc.

bizaa-‘atun – (a treasure, a capital, stock, principal sum, wealth). The things to be sold are called bizaa-‘ah. During the times, when Holy Qur’an was revealed, there was a fashion of selling and buying the human beings by making them slaves.

The people of caravan hid Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) from others, considering that He (peace be upon him) was a very valuable wealth. It is mentioned that the brothers placed Joseph (peace be upon him) in the depth of the pit, but they continued looking after Him. They were not desirous of His death. They wished heartily that someone should pull Him out of the pit, carry away and sell Him at  any distant place. Therefore, they used to watch the situation every moment. They knew immediately that the people of the caravan have pulled Him (peace be upon him) out by means of a pail, and they have hidden Him; determining the property of trade. Brothers of Joseph (peace be upon him) were eager of the same. So they were comforted. They went unto the people of the caravan and satisfied that Joseph (peace be upon him) was with them.

Allah Almighty was well Aware of the conduct of all of them and the consequence that what would be happened in future.
