Commentary
Hummil-naaa – (we were laden), it is past tense passive
from the word tahmiil, which has come out from himlun. Himlun
means “load”. Tahmiil means “to burden with load”. It aims “a burden had
been loaded on us”.
‘Alqaa – (proposed), it is past tense from the word ‘ilqaa-‘un,
which has been derived from “laqaa”. Laqaa means “to meet”. ‘Ilqaa-‘un
means “to bring together, to join”. It aims “to produce in front, to disclose,
to reveal”.
The Children of Israel said to Moses (peace be upon him): This
plan has been designed by Saamirii. It is only which we did; that “we
possessed abundant ornaments which were borrowed from the folk of Pharaoh, and
we were laden with it like a burden. It was not of our use. We did cast it out
from our possession. When Samirii saw the abundant ornaments, he made a
plan and melted the entire ornaments. Then he fabricated an idol of the form of
a calf, from the body of which; a sound like cow’s voice used to come out. Then
he produced it before us and misled us (saying): It is your god, so you should
adore of it. He said: Actually the god of Moses is the same also, but he
forgot, and other all people followed him.
It has been written about Samirii that he was a clever
person. On the other side, the Children of Israel had already been habituated
of adoration like this being under the influence of Pharaoh. Therefore, Samirii
succeeded in his trick easily.
