Commentary
During those days, Saamirii, who was a deceitful person,
fabricated a calf for the Children of Israel, from the inner of which, a sound
used to come out. He said: Worship it!
It is on the record that at that time, the Children of Israel
were six hundred thousand in numbers. All of them were misled by Saamirii
except only twelve thousand people; who denied from his obedience, and they
supported Aaron (peace be upon him), who warned them continuously, that they
should worship Allaah Almighty only and should not ascribe plurality to
Him.
It has been commanded in this verse: When Moses (peace be upon him)
completed his fixed space of time on the Mount Toor and Torah was given
to him, then Allaah Almighty informed him: We have put the Children of
Israel in a trial in your absence and they have been deceived by Saamirii.
Moses (peace be upon him) returned unto his folk along with
Torah. At that time he was angry and sad. He (peace be upon him) reproved the
people on their state and said to them: O enemies of sense! You did know that Allaah
Almighty has promised to give you Torah. And I had gone on the Mount Toor
because I was called by Him for the same purpose. Then did you not depend upon
such cheerful Promise of Such Kind and Beneficent Lord?
