Commentary
‘As-saharatu – (the wizards), this word is plural of saahir,
which is the subject from the word sa-ha-ra.
As soon as Moses (peace be upon him) received the Command of Allaah
Almighty, entire condition of fear had been over from his mind. And he threw
his staff on the earth, which became a serpent and it ate up all cords and
staves which the wizards had thrown on the earth and which were being seen as
snakes. The wizards had already decided after hearing the speech of Moses (peace
be upon him) that this person cannot be a wizard. His (peace be upon him)
thoughts are totally strange.
Then, when they saw a great miracle, they all fell prostrate,
and a sound came out from their hearts: we believed in the Lord of Aaron and Moses (peace be
upon them).
Pharaoh beheld that it had been
spoiled. Being angry; he said to the wizards: what does it mean that you have
believed before my permission? Certainly you have partaken in conspiracy along
with Moses (peace be upon them) against
me, and it seems that he is your chief and you have learnt magic from him. Now you
wish to rebel against me; following him. By influencing, you want to tempt
other people also. Good! I am going to punish you as severely that you will
lose your senses.
