43. And We verily gave
the Scripture unto Moses after We had destroyed the generations of old; clear
Testimonies for mankind, and a Guidance and a Mercy, that haply they might
accept admonition.
44. And thou (Muhammad)
wast not on the Western side (of the Mount) Toor when We expounded
unto Moses the Commandment, and thou wast not among those present –
45a. But We brought
forth many generations, and their lives dragged on for them.

Commentary
Basaaa-‘ira – (clear Testimonies, enlightenment), this word is plural of Basiiratun,
which means “wisdom, sagacity, discrimination”.
Tataawala – (dragged on, prolonged), this word has
come out from tuul, which means “length, extension”. Tataawala means
“lengthened”.
After causing to hear the summary of the story of Moses (peace
be upon him), it is commanded: We revealed to
Moses (peace be upon him) the Command
(Torah). Before it, We had destroyed Our earlier nations as a punishment of
their disobedience and rebellion. In Torah, We entered matters of Insightful
Advice, arranged Signs for the Guidance of the people of those times and
described them way of deserving Our Mercy. If they wished, they could learn all
matters of goodness from Torah. Our object was the same that they should
remember those Commandments, give up insurrection and disobedience.
Like that, O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings
and peace be upon him): We appointed you Our Messenger and revealed Holy Qur’an
upon you. It is Our Scripture, this proof of which is sufficient that you
recite in it circumstances of old Prophets and Messengers (peace be upon them) and
cause to hear these people correctly, as you would have seen everything by your
eyes. But you were not present on the Western side of the Mount when We appointed
Moses (peace be upon him) as Our
Messenger. And you did not witness any incident with your eyes. But such time
had reached that a Messenger (peace be upon him) was to be sent for the
guidance of the people in the world.
