The root of mischief

The root of mischief (L-2817)

75.  Qaala  Yaaa-‘Ibliisu  maa  mana-‘aka  ‘an-  tasjuda  limaa  khalaqtu  biyaddayy.  ‘Astak-barta  ‘am  kunta  minal-‘aaliin.

76.  Qaala  ‘anaa  khayrum-minh.  Khalaqranii  min-naarinw-wa  khalaqtahuu  min.  tiin.

75. He said, “O Satan, what prevented you from prostrating before what I created with My Own hands? Are you too proud, or were you one of the exalted?”

76. He said, “I am better than he; You created me from fire, and You created him from clay.”

‘Astak-barta – (Are you too proud), actually this word is ‘A-‘istak-barta.

When Iblis stood-still and did not fall prostrate before Adam (Peace be upon him) then God Almighty asked from him: Which thing prevented you from bowing down before Adam, while he is a pattern of My Divine Power apparently and secretly? Perfection of My Omnipotence appears from his body and soul. Accordingly, I commanded to the Angels (Peace be upon them) to fall prostrate before him. What happened to you that you did not participate in their act while you are dwelling with them? Do you wish intentionally to be greater violently or do you consider really that you are superior to them?

Iblis replied: Am I really not greater than him {Adam (Peace be upon him)}? You have created me from fire and him from mire. Is fire not better than mire? Then why should I bow down before him? Clearly known from it is that use of personal sense before the Command of God Almighty is sign of misfortune. When Lord ordered to his servant: Do this work! Then the servant cannot deny. If now the servant does not carry out His order, then certainly he is disobedient. His false excuse will not be heard that he could not understand the order, and that he thought, “It should be done contrary to the order”. His putting off is either due to ignorance or it is his unreasonable haughtiness.
