New methods or pretenses (L-3200)
It has been caused to understand clearly in this verse: Don’t invent something new in religion. Keep up that straight way of worship, which is taught by Holy Qur’an. Don’t consider that Allaah Almighty will like more your self-invented ways of worship and you will reap reward by doing such works which were neither done by the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) himself, nor his companions did and nor their followers (May Allaah be pleased with them).
After describing the circumstances of the Christians, we are informed: They considered that they could acquire more pleasure of Allaah Almighty by monastery; leaving all worldly works. But they were at wrong. Allaah Almighty did not ordain it for them. It is not such a matter which may be accomplished in the world.
At last they could not observe it with right observance. Likewise, those residents of monasteries and places of worship became burden on other common people who were engaged in worldly ordinary businesses. And it happened that they began to pressurize the illiterate people and get offerings and the things of dedication by force. They claimed: We remain busy in the worship of God. Serving us and fulfilling our all requirements is your responsibility, otherwise if you gave up your duty, you will be destroyed due to our imprecation. Accordingly they received everything from others forcibly and under the veil of dervish’s way of life; they had been addicted to pleasure. And there was no such evil which they did not commit.
The new things which are invented in a religion, whether at first the intention into them seems very good, but later those remain shouts only of the world, and there remains no object but to get worldly comfort. Today we observe many traditions, which maybe had begun with good intention, but now those are nothing save means of reaping worldly advantage without toil. Now all such affairs have become a respectable way of begging, with the only difference that a needy beggar begs with humility on the name of Allaah Almighty and these beggars (who are in the veil of religion) snatch from the people everything by force, and say: You would be black-faced in both worlds if you did not pay offerings. It is nothing but the same imitation of the Christians.
For the Muslims, that is the Right Path which has been
established by Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and
peace be upon him), his companions and their followers (May Allaah be
pleased with them). There is no chance of introducing new customs in the
religion. Do only that which your ancestors did.
