Introduction of the Chapter “She who disputes” (L-3203)

Chapter “MUJAADALAH” - (She who disputes) - 58

According to order, this is fifty eighth (58) Chapter of Holy Qur’an. It was revealed in Madinah during fourth or fifth year AH. It has three Sections. In the beginning, the decision has been caused to hear concerning “Zihaar (thihar)” (this word is a kind of divorce, in terms of jurisprudence; when a husband illustrates his wife by a simile as his mother, sister or any of other such women who are unlawful for him to marry in accordance with Religious Instructions). Before Islam, in Arabia, the rule was that if a husband used to say to his wife “you are my mother”, she was forbidden to him for the rest of his life. Like this, the same rule was that although he did not say mother to his wife but compared any part of wife’s body with mother which was not allowed for him to see. In Islam too, a man named “Aws bin Al-Saamit” said to his wife named “Khawlah bint Sa’lab (May Allaah be pleased with them)”, “you are for me like my mother’s back”.

Khawlah bint Sa’lab” came weeping to the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and requested: O Messenger! What is command for me? He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) said: No Revelation of Allaah has come to me so far in this regard. I say nothing without the Revelation. Apparently its impact must be the same as it is in order till now. She began to argue: “In this manner, my house will be destroyed, my children will get lost, if they will live with me; they will die with hunger, and if they will live with him; he will not be able to look after them properly”. She went to her home and began to pray: My Lord! Send down Revelation to Your Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) concerning judgement of my dispute. I have no such place besides You where I may cry for help!

This case of women has been settled for always in this Chapter. It is commanded: By saying mother to own wife or comparing with her, the wife is not divorced. She will remain wife of the same husband and the house will not be broken. But the husband cannot commit a sexual intercourse with his wife, unless the husband pays the ransom for his nonsense. Now the Muslims should abide by the same Command. If they will do contrary to this Command, they will be punished severely on the Day of Resurrection. Allaah Almighty knows all works. He is Present everywhere, every time and with every individual. Every person’s character book will be handed over to everyone on that Day and they will be dealt with reward or punishment according to their deeds.

After that the hypocrites have been prevented from their indecent acts and the Muslims have been instructed: Your confidential conversation should only be for good works instead of sins and making plans of disobedience of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him). Respect him in his Assembly instead of talking nonsense. Those who apparently are Muslims but secretly enemies of Islam, for them severe Doom is ready in the Hereafter. Moreover in the world also, no one can win opposing Allaah Almighty. It is the brilliancy of the believers that they consider their families, tribes, wealth and property even themselves nothing before Allaah Almighty. The Paradise is ready for such people where they will dwell forever.
