Ransom of Zihaar (L-3205)

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُظَٰهِرُونَ مِن نِّسَآئِهِمْ ثُمَّ يَعُودُونَ لِمَا قَالُوا۟ فَتَحْرِيرُ رَقَبَةٍ مِّن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا ذَٰلِكُمْ تُوعَظُونَ بِهِۦ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ خَبِيرٌ 3  فَمَن لَّمْ يَجِدْ فَصِيَامُ شَهْرَيْنِ مُتَتَابِعَيْنِ مِن قَبْلِ أَن يَتَمَآسَّا فَمَن لَّمْ يَسْتَطِعْ فَإِطْعَامُ سِتِّينَ مِسْكِينًا ذَٰلِكَ لِتُؤْمِنُوا۟ 4a

3.  Wallaziina  yuzaahi-ruuna  min-nisaaa-'ihim  summa  ya-'uuduuna  limaa  qaaluu  fa-tah-riiru  raqaba-tim-min-  qabli  ‘any-yatamaaas-saa.  Zaalikum  tuu-'azuuna  bih.  Wallaahu  bimaa  ta'-maluuna  Khabiir. 4a.  Famal-lam  yajid  fa-siyaamu  shah-rayni  mutataabi-'ayni  min  qabli  ‘any-yatamaaas-saa.  Famal-lam  yastati'  fa-‘it-'aamu  sittiina  miskiinaa.  Zaalika  li-tu'-minuu –

3. Those who put away their wives (by saying they are as their mothers) and afterward would go back on that which they have said, (the penalty) in that case (is) the freeing of a slave before they touch one another. Unto this you are exhorted; and Allah is Informed of what you do. 4a. And he who finds not (the wherewithal), let him fast for two successive months before they touch one another; and for him who is unable to do so (the penance is) the feeding of sixty needy ones. This, that you may put trust

It is commanded: Those men who put away their wives by saying that they are as their mothers or are for them like their mother’s back (‘Anti  ‘alayya  ka-zahri  ‘ummii), and afterward they wish to go back on that which they have said, and desire to meet their wives, then there must be the penalty in that case; which is either the freeing of a slave (or bond-maid) of whom they are masters before they touch one another, because the husband cannot commit a sexual intercourse with his wife before it, although she will remain his wife and there will be no divorce by saying the wife “mother”. That is what you are admonished thereby; and you will be careful in future from saying such nonsense. If you do not have any slave or bond-maid, then you would have to fast for two months consecutively without any break. If you are unable to do this, then you must feed sixty poor persons. This all is for the purpose that you should give up customs and traditions which you used to do before Islam and obey the Commands of Allaah Almighty; putting full trust in Him and believe in the Messenger-hood of Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and follow him in all works.
