This is how the Qur'an was revealed (L-2961)

وَكَذَٰلِكَ أَوْحَيْنَآ إِلَيْكَ رُوحًا مِّنْ أَمْرِنَا مَا كُنتَ تَدْرِى مَا ٱلْكِتَٰبُ وَلَا ٱلْإِيمَٰنُ وَلَٰكِن جَعَلْنَٰهُ نُورًا نَّهْدِى بِهِۦ مَن نَّشَآءُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا وَإِنَّكَ لَتَهْدِىٓ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٍ مُّسْتَقِيمٍ 52   صِرَٰطِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلَّذِى لَهُۥ مَا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ أَلَآ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ تَصِيرُ ٱلْأُمُورُ 53

52.  Wa  kazaalika  ‘awhayNaaa  ‘ilayka  Ruuham-min  ‘amriNaa.  Maa  kunta  tadrii  mal-Kitaabu  wa  lal-‘iimaanu  wa  laakin-  ja-‘alNaahu  Nuuran-Nahdii  bihii  man-nashaaa-‘u  min  ‘IbaadiNaa.  Wa  ‘innaka  latahdii  ‘ilaa  Siraatim-Mustaqiim. 53.  SiraaTillaahil-lazii  laHuu maa  fis-samaawaati  wa  maa  fil-‘arz.  ‘Alaaa  ‘ilAllaahi  tasiirul-‘umuur. (Section 5/6)

52. We thus inspired you spiritually, by Our command. You did not know what the Scripture is, nor what faith is, but We made it a light, with which We guide whomever We will of Our servants. You surely guide to a straight path. 53. The path of God, to whom belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Indeed, to God all matters revert.

When God Almighty is so much High and Majestic, whereas the mankind is so much weak that he cannot come before Him face to face; and His Wisdom desired to convey His Message to the mankind, then He appointed His Messengers (Peace be upon them) in the world and revealed His Commandments into their hearts, either He caused to hear His Voice from behind the screen, or sent His angel towards them apparently or secretly and they delivered His Commandments to human beings.

In this verse, it is commanded: O Muhammad (ﷺ)! We sent Our Commandments by those three means (which were explained previously) so that the mankind may dwell in the world in accordance with Our Will. Holy Qur’an is a treasure of such Commandments which were brought to you by Our Angel named Gabriel, whose title is “Ruuhul-‘Amiin” (Peace be upon him) and revealed it in your heart. This is such Message by which dead hearts come to life. You were unaware of it before this that what is the Scripture; in which Commandments of God Almighty have been recorded. And you did not know the reality of the Belief. We made this Qur’an a Light and sent down to you which explained all useful matters, so that Our slaves may find the Path of their betterment from it by the Grace of God Almighty. We guide the mankind by means of Holy Qur’an. O Messenger (ﷺ)! Your work is to show them Right Path by acting upon its Commandments, the Path which leads to God Almighty, Who is the Owner of the entire such things which exist in the heavens and in the earth, and all works reach Him.
