61.  And if thou wert to ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth, and constrained the sun and the moon (to their appointed work)? They would say: Allah. How then are they turned away?

Commentary

It is part of the previous verse. It is commanded: The Believers, who left their houses for the cause of Allaah Almighty, would be housed in lofty dwellings of the Garden; underneath which rivers flow. There they will dwell for ever. It is the best wages of good works for them who obeyed the Commandments of Allaah Almighty, toiled with patience and relied upon their Lord.

After that, it is commanded: They should not think that if they left their everything here, even native land too, then what arrangement would be for their food at a new dwelling place? There are so many creatures of Allaah Almighty in the world which do not have saved provision. They get up in the morning with empty hands and sleep at night empty handed. Allaah Almighty provides them food also. Like this, The Supplier of the means of subsistence for you is also the Same. He will arrange for your provisions with His Mercy wherever you will go. There is no reason of disbelieving in Him. You can see by asking these Disbelievers that, “Who created the skies and the earth? Who subjected the sun and the moon to perform their individual responsibilities?” They would surely say, "Allah." But it is not known that after admitting these matters, how are they deluded from obedience and worship of Allaah Almighty?

58b. Excellent is the reward of the [righteous] workers (29:59) Who have been patient and upon their Lord rely. (29:60) And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allah provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing. (29:61) If you asked them, "Who created the heavens and earth and subjected the sun and the moon?" they would surely say, "Allah." Then how are they deluded?

Commentary

La-Nubawwi-‘anna – (We shall house, We shall assign).

Gurafun – (lofty chambers, upper rooms), this word is plural of gurfatun, which means “rooms in upper storey”.

Disbelievers of Makkah had made difficult for the Muslims to live. The Muslims have been commanded in this verse: The purpose of life should be to worship Allaah Almighty. If you are unable to worship Him in your native land, then you should leave it and settle at any other place. Difficulties of this world are only for a few days; at last you have to die. Remember it that every soul will taste death. None can be saved from it. And after death you will be reproduced before Allaah Almighty. By compulsion, you would have to leave your native land, families, companions and friends at the time of death. So if you will leave all such relationships for the sake of Allaah Almighty, you will be requited with good reward after death.

Allaah Almighty commands: it is Our Promise that if you will believe and do righteous deeds - We will surely assign to you of Paradise (elevated) chambers beneath which rivers flow, wherein you will abide eternally.

After that, many families immigrated from Makkah to Abyssinia.

53.  They bid thee hasten on the Doom (of Allah). And if a term had not been appointed, the Doom would assuredly have come unto them (ere now). And verily it will come upon them suddenly when they perceive not.

54.  They bid thee hasten on the Doom, and lo! Hell verily will encompass the disbelievers –

Commentary

For them, who are influenced by outward show, this world has become so attractive that they forget everything in the existing merriments. The same condition was of the Infidels of Makkah. They used to say: In what manner Belief and in what manner Doom? Even before the Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him), a man named Nazar son of Al-Haris, said unhesitatingly: Afflict us or cause to hail upon us if you speak the truth!

In reply, it is commanded: They urge you to hasten the punishment. Undoubtedly they deserve immediate punishment due to their wicked deeds, but a term of punishment has also been specified like other things. When that time will reach, then they will be careless and the Doom will come to them suddenly, but they do not perceive. Accordingly, the disbelievers were slain by believers after a few days. Moreover, the Doom of the Doomsday has already been encompassing them. Their present infidelity, ascribing plurality to Allaah Almighty and oppressing the innocent are Hell for them. The matters which they consider ordinary today; will surround them from above them and from below their feet in the Hereafter, becoming fire, snakes and scorpions. At that time, the Angel (peace be upon him) of the Doom will say: Taste the result of what you used to do.

Commentary

It is commanded that these people say: we shall believe in his (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) Messenger-hood then, when he will show us miracles according to our demand. Say to them: This Scripture, which he has been reciting and causing to hear before you; is this miracle not sufficient? Does it not strike you that those have been increasing day by day who believe in him (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and such good things have been coming to their mind which they have forgotten since long? No doubt, the person who will believe in this Scripture with true heart, doors of mercy will be opened on him and he will learn useful matters constantly.

Moreover, say to them O Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): My Believers have been increasing day by day notwithstanding you trouble them. And whosoever comes, believes in me. It is Evidence of Allaah Almighty in this matter that I am true. And there can be no greater Witness than Allaah Almighty, because He is Aware of the entire circumstances of the heavens and the earth. Whosoever will not believe in Allaah Almighty but believe in falsehood, shall be the loser.

Commentary

It is commanded: Leave these redundant thoughts. Neither this Book, which he {Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)} has been reciting before you, was dictated by someone and nor was written by any individual (Angel, mankind or Jinn etc.) You know him that neither he learnt reading and nor writing from any human being. If you say that it was got written from someone else, then you also should bring such kind of Book written by any other. As you are rich and can pay wages to the writer, while you did neither do so and nor can do, then why do you make nonsense? Listen! We tell you the Truth of this Scripture. Give up your obstinacy!

It is the peculiarity of this Scripture that Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) heard it from an Angel (peace be upon him) sent by Us and he learnt it by heart. Similarly, it will remain chest to chest till the Day of Resurrection in the breasts of Scholars and Reciters of Holy Qur’an. It is another matter that afterwards it has been preserved also in written form. However in the beginning it was not written and nor its preservation depends on availability in written form.

Then it is commanded: these disbelievers say: Why does he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) not show us any such unusual thing (miracle) which we say to show? If he (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) will show us a miracle in accordance with our demand, then we shall believe that he is a Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him).

Say to them: I have not come to show you miracles, but my duty is to warn and frighten you clearly from the consequences of your wrong deeds.

Some people of Makkah who were Believers

Chapter ’Al-‘Ankabuut”- (The Spider) - 29

‘A-‘uu-zu  Billaahiminash-Shay-taanir- Rajiim.
(I seek refuge in Allaah from Satan the outcast)

Bis-Millaahir-Rah-maanir-Rahiim.

47.  And in like manner We have revealed unto thee the Scripture. So those unto whom We gave the Scripture aforetime will believe therein; and of these (also) there are some who believe therein. And none deny Our Revelations save the disbelievers.

48.  And thou (O Muhammad) wast not a reader of any scripture before it, nor didst thou write it with thy right hand, for then might those have doubted, who follow falsehood.
47.  Wa  kazaalika  ‘anzalNaaa  ‘ilaykal-Kitaab.  Fallaziina  ‘aa-tayNaahumul-Kitaaba  yu’-minuuna  biH.  Wa  min  haaa-‘ulaaa-‘i  many-yu’-minu  biH.  Wa  maa  yajhadu  bi-‘Aayaati-Naaa  ‘illal-  kaafiruun.

48.  Wa  maa  kunta  tatluu  min  qablihii  min  kitaabinw-wa  laa  takhut-tuhuu  bi-yamiinika  ‘izal-lar-taabal-mubtiluun.

Commentary

Laa  takhut-tu – (you did not use to write), this word has come out from khatta, which means “to write”.

It is commanded: There is no reason of having doubt in Holy Qur’an. As We revealed old heavenly Scriptures (Torah, Psalms, Gospel etc.) upon ancient Messengers (peace be upon them), like them, We have revealed this last Scripture (Holy Qur’an) too upon you {O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him)}. Accordingly, towards whom We sent the Scriptures in the past, some justice-loving people from them do not hesitate in having belief that this Scripture (Holy Qur’an) is true. They, including those Arabians who were unaware of old Scriptures, believe and acknowledge its truth.

Only such people reject the Holy Qur’an who have been inclined to deny violently. O Muhammad (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): You learnt neither reading from anyone nor writing with your right hand any scripture before it. These people are well aware of it because you have been dwelling among them with effect from your childhood. If you had learnt reciting old Scriptures and you could write something then there would have been a doubt that you have copied from old Scriptures and prepared a new Scripture. While you don’t know reading and writing, but recite such incomparable Book, then how these foes of truth can say that it has not been sent by Allaah Almighty?

46.  And argue not with the People of the Scripture  unless it be in (a way) that is better, save with such of them as do wrong; and say: We believe in that which hath been revealed unto us and revealed unto you; our God and your God is One, and unto Him we surrender.
46.  Wa  laa  tujaadiluuu  ‘Ahlal-Kitaabi  ‘illaa  billatii  hiya  ‘ahsanu,  ‘illallaziina  zalamuu  minhum  wa  quuluu  ‘aamannaa  Billazii  ‘Unzila  ‘ilaynaa  wa  ‘Unzila  ‘ilaykum  wa  ‘Ilaahunaa  wa  ‘Ilaahukum  Waahidunw-wa  nahnu  laHuu  Muslimuun.

Commentary

Laa  tujaadiluu – (Do not argue), it is in negative tense from the word mujaadalatun, another form of which is jadaal. Jadaal has come out from the word jadal, which means “dispute”. Jadaal means “questioning and answering each other, which is called “Mubaahisah” (argument, dispute, debate, discussion etc.)

In the verse mentioned in previous lesson, Messenger of Allaah Almighty (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) and by means of him; Muslims were commanded: Recite Holy Qur’an and establish worship (Prayer) regularly!

It has been commanded in this verse: When other people will hear from you such sayings, they will desire to quarrel with you. You should cause to understand softly and with gentleness to those who are the People of the Scripture from them and who believe in their Prophets (peace be upon them). You should not argue with them for grieving. However you can behave strictly with those of them who begin to do wrong by violence and commit injustice.

You should explain before them softly who do not trouble you that, “We believe in both – your heavenly Scriptures (Torah, Psalms and Gospel) and our heavenly Scripture (Holy Qur’an) that those all are true.

Our God and your God (both of us) is One; and we follow the Commandments of only the Same Real God. We do not ascribe any plurality or equal to Him, because we believe that there is none who may be able to be His partner. You also should do the same and believe that Holy Qur’an is a True Book. If you agree, then there is no difference between both of us (you and we).
