Introduction of Chapter 60 (L-3235)
Chapter “MUMTAHINAH” - (She that is to be examined) - 60
This is sixtieth Chapter of Holy Qur’an according to order. It was sent down during eighth year AH in Madinah. This was the time when two years had passed after Peace Treaty of Hudaybiyyah between Muslims and the Infidels of Makkah. That Treaty was made during sixth year AH. For two years; both parties abode by terms of peace treaty correctly. According to the treaty, the infidel of Makkah who used to embrace Islam, Messenger of Allaah (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) used to return him to Makkah, but the Muslim who used to be a renegade from Islam and go to Makkah, was not returned by the Infidels. During those days, some women of Makkah embraced Islam and came to Madinah. Because there was no mention in the treaty concerning the women, and there was a great inconvenience in sending back the women. Therefore the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) did not send them back. The Qureish of Makkah claimed that the women were included in the terms of the treaty, so they should be returned.
It is obvious that those women would have been tormented by the Infidels of Makkah, so the same dispute has been settled in the last part of this Chapter that “the woman who joins Muslims after having belief and leaving her home, she is then out from the nuptial of her disbelieving husband. Now the Muslim man, who will wed her, will pay that money as compensation to her first husband which he spent on her previous wife. Like this, if any Muslim woman adopts infidelity and joins the disbelievers, they will not send her back, but the man disbeliever who marries her; will pay so much money to her first believing husband as compensation which he spent on her. Muslims accepted this commandment most cordially, but the disbelievers denied from paying the money of compensation and disobeyed. But they gave up constancy for returning the women.
Two years of Peace Treaty passed satisfactorily. After two
years, during eighth AH, infidels of Makkah broke the Peace Treaty
openly. The Messenger (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon him) said
nothing, but ordered to get ready for assaulting upon Makkah secretly,
and commanded: This news should not reach the people of Makkah, otherwise
there would be war and we would have to shed blood in Sacred Place of Makkah.
A Muslim, named Hatib bin Abi Balta’h (May Allaah be pleased with
him) wrote a secret letter to the Qureish of Makkah for saving
his wife and children; who had been living there so far and informed them: The
Messenger (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon him) is going to attack on Makkah
along with a great Army, and certainly Allaah Almighty will help him. Do
what you can; for your safety. This letter was given to a woman for delivering,
who departed. The Messenger (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon him) was
informed by the Inspiration, who sent Ali and some other companions (May Allaah
be pleased with them) behind her. They snatched the letter from the woman and returned.
Hatib was interrogated, who requested: I am alone, so I thought; this
way my family would be saved from the Infidels. And I am sure that however
victory is of yours. He (grace, glory, blessing and peace be upon him) forgave
his error.
