11. Have
you not observed those who are hypocrites, (how) they tell their brethren who
disbelieve among the People of the Scripture: If you are driven out, we
surely will go out with you, and we will never obey anyone against you, and
if you are attacked we verily will help you. And Allah bears witness that
they verily are liars. 12a. (For)
indeed if they are driven out they go not out with them, |
There is mention of hypocrites in these verses. Before arrival of the Muslims, there was a class of such people in Madinah who were desirous to become masters of all. Their Chieftain was AbdUllah bin Ubii. He was trying to become ruler of Madinah. When Islam spread in Madinah and the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) reached there himself; along with his special people due to troubling by the idolaters of Makkah, then AbdUllah bin Ubii and his followers kept losing consciousness. They considered that open enmity against the Muslims would not be suitable, and thought that Islam is a game only for a few days, so they should not oppose it. Accordingly, apparently they embraced Islam, but secretly they began to conspire along with the enemies of Islam and uproot the Muslims. But that cannot be harmed by anyone whose Protector is Allaah.
In these verses, circumstances of the hypocrites have been described. It is fact that they were disclosed by Revelation; otherwise they would have been hidden foes. It is commanded: These hypocrites made secret treaty with the Jews of Banu Nazayr who were open enemies of Muslims and friends of the idolaters of Makkah. The treaty was, “If you are expelled, we will surely leave with you, and if you are fought, we will surely aid you against Muslims.
It is commanded: Allaah testifies that
they are liars. If the Jews are expelled, they will not leave with them.
