Who are your foes and why? (L-3242)

إِنَّمَا يَنْهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ قَٰتَلُوكُمْ فِى ٱلدِّينِ وَأَخْرَجُوكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمْ وَظَٰهَرُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ إِخْرَاجِكُمْ أَن تَوَلَّوْهُمْ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُمْ فَأُو۟لَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ 9

9.  ‘Innamaa  yanhaa-kumUllaahu  'anillaziina  qaataluukum  fid-Diini  wa  ‘akhrajuukum-min-  diyaarikum  wa  zaaharuu  'alaaa  ‘ikhraajikum  ‘an- tawal-lawhum.  Wa  many-yatawal-lahum  fa-‘ulaaa-'ika  humuz-zaalimuun.

9. Allah forbids you only those who warred against you on account of religion and have driven you out from your homes and helped to drive you out, that you make friends of them. Whosoever makes friends of them - (All) such are wrong- doers.

It is commanded: However Allaah Almighty forbids you from making them friends who do not admit the freedom of religion, but they fight the people only for that they are not of their religion. Those who got ready to fight you for the reason that you were Muslims, and they expelled you from your homes or helped and encouraged others in your expulsion, making such people allies is not suitable. And whoever makes allies of them, they are called oppressors and those who make them friends, are included among the wrongdoers too.

In this verse and in the verse before this, it has been described very clearly: You can live together along with such non-Muslims who do not have enmity on the basis that you are not of their religion. You are opposite to those only who make the religion foundation of dispute and compel the Muslims to adopt their religion, otherwise they would be exiled.

The Muslims should fight such people, even that their intellect may be correct and they understand the matter well. Keeping in touch with the Just people is compulsory, whether they belong to any religion. Allaah Almighty loves such people.
