Condition of the haughty (L-3311)

17. Lo!
We have tried them as We tried the owners of the garden when they vowed that
they would pluck its fruit next morning, 18. And
made no exception (for the Will of Allah); 19. Then
a visitation from your Lord came upon it while they slept 20. And
in the morning it was as if plucked. 21. And
they cried out one unto another in the morning, 22. Saying:
Run unto your field if you would pluck (the fruit). 23. So
they went off, saying one unto another in low tones: |
It is commanded: Say to the haughty people of Makkah: Do not boast on your wealth and properties. These things are a source of mankind’s trial, so that it may be judged that whether a rich remains a mankind or otherwise. Listen to an example of this trial.
In Yemen, there were some brothers who got a garden and some agricultural land in heir-ship. Their father used to pay the poor-due, give alms and charity etc. But his sons were very stingy who used to give nothing to any needy. Once, the garden and crops were ready. They intended strongly at night before going to sleep that in the morning they would pluck the ripe fruit and reap the crops ready for reaping, but they did not make any exception for the Will of Allaah, that is to say, they did not say “’Inshaa-‘Allaah”. At night, when they were sleeping, a sudden blast of wind-storm came, the garden was inflamed and everything was ruined.
When they got up as usual, said to one another together: We
should go early in the morning, pluck the fruit and reap crops immediately. In
short, they set out to their agricultural
land, while lowering their voices.
