1. O
Prophet! Why ban you that which Allah has made lawful for you, seeking to
please your wives? And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful. 2. Allah
has made lawful for you (Muslims) absolution from your oaths (of such a
kind), and Allah is your Protector. He is the Knower, the Wise. |
It was a practice of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) that he used to visit all the houses of his chaste wives (May Allaah be pleased with them) for a short time after Asr (afternoon) Prayer. Once, he stayed at the house of Zainab more than routine. Aishah and Hafsah came to know that Zainab had caused him to drink honey, which became reason of delay. They made such plan, due to which he swore to please them that in future he would never drink honey and said to them, “Don’t tell this to any other”. At that time he thought, “Zainab would be grieved unnecessarily if she knew”. It was an ordinary affair, but Allaah Almighty prevented from it, so that in future; the wives may not compel their husbands by opposing to leave any lawful thing.
Therefore, it was commanded for the guidance of the Muslims: O Prophet (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him): Don’t seek approval of your wives so much that you begin to swear for leaving any lawful thing for the sake of them, lest this way may become a rule for future. However, Allaah is Forgiving and Merciful. There is no need of fulfilling such oaths. Allaah Almighty has already ordained for the Muslims the dissolution of their oaths, which is “Breaking the oath by paying expiation”.
Allaah Almighty is
your Protector and you are His slaves. Even then the basis of His every Command
is on any advisability because He has full Knowledge of everything and is Aware
of all advisabilities. The aim of this commandment is “lest the wives begin to
compel their husbands for fulfilling their such demands, by which they may be
involved in unsuitable matters”.
