3. When
the Prophet confided a fact unto one of his wives and when she afterward
divulged it and Allah apprised him thereof, he made known (to her) part
thereof and passed over part. And when he told it her she said: Who has told
you? He said: The Knower, the Aware has told me. 4a. If
you twain turn unto Allah repentant, (you have cause to do so) for your
hearts desired (the ban); |
In this verse, there is an indication towards such circumstances, during which Command of previous verse was revealed. Stay of the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) at the house of Zainab for drinking honey was unpleasant to Aishah and Hafsah (May Allaah be pleased with them). Both of them consulted with each other that they must compel the Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) by opposing to leave drinking honey. When he came to Aishah, she said, “A smell is coming from your mouth”. He said, “I drank honey”. Then he visited the house of Hafsah, but she said the same also. He (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) said secretly: I shall not drink honey in future, but you must not tell to any other.
But Hafsah told Aishah (May Allaah be pleased with them). The Messenger (grace, glory, blessings and peace be upon him) said to Hafsah but did not declare his anger: You have told my secret to Aishah. The same has been described in this verse: He made known part of it and ignored a part.
Hafsah asked: Who
did describe you that I have told your secret to someone else? He (grace,
glory, blessings and peace be upon him) said: My Lord has described me Who
knows everything and is Aware of every matter. Then Allaah Almighty
commanded for Aishah and Hafsah: Both of them must repent to Allaah
because they have gone wrong from the right path and their hearts have
deviated. Everyone must be careful in future.
